Lara Trump is stepping down from her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee. What’s next for her? Is a Senate seat in her future?

Have you taken your place on the wall?

From The Associated Press:

Lara Trump will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee as she considers a number of potential options with her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, set to return to the White House.

Among those possibilities is replacing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whom Trump tapped to be the next secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed, his replacement — who would be chosen by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — would serve for two years until the next regularly scheduled election in 2026, at which point the seat would be up for election again.

Gov. DeSantis, who has promised to choose a replacement for Sen. Rubio by early January, is currently gathering names and conducting a preliminary vetting process. Among these names are Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, and former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, according to The Associated Press.

Lara Trump, however, seems to be the most likely pick for the job. Several prominent Republicans, including Sen. Rick Scott, Sen. Katie Britt, and other Trump allies, are all pressuring DeSantis to choose the younger Trump. The President-elect himself has reportedly spoken to DeSantis about his daughter, but he has not publicly endorsed her.

For her part, Lara Trump seems open to the possibility of serving in the Senate, telling The Associated Press in an interview that she would “100% consider” filling the seat if presented with the offer. She is not openly campaigning for the seat, however, publicly stating different reasons for her resignation from the RNC. From The Associated Press:

Elected as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump was a key player in the Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a narrow House majority. What she does next could shape Republican politics, given her elevated political profile and her ties to the incoming president.

While Whatley will remain RNC chairman, Lara Trump said she felt she had accomplished her goals in the co-chair role.

“With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.”
