I Prayed have prayed
Lord, thank you for giving us a purpose not because of what we do but because of who we are: chosen, unconditionally loved, accepted, and forgiven.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” ~Matthew 11:28

For me, this week has proven to be the heaviest laden of the pandemic with feeling weary and burdened, as it relates to the ongoing uncertainty of being quarantined. I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for a plethora of things in my life. My family is healthy, my husband is still working hard, my kids are acquiescing to the new rhythms of life with resiliency, I have a home, I have plenty of food, I have an extensive family who is supportive, and dear friends who are kind and hilarious. Yet, I have felt more so, this week, that I am slogging through life with a meager supply of motivation. There is a war within me to maintain a heart of thankfulness, focused on what is most important. I’m also wrestling with a lack of desire to do much as I simultaneously ponder, “What is my purpose?” This array of feelings has culminated in a presence of angst, even if below the surface.

This call from Jesus to, “Come to Me,” has been a command in which I have positioned my thoughts. In addition to the state of our current world, this feeling of weariness and the impact of being overwrought with burdens, has escalated for me, due to struggles within a relationship. Each of us can identify one or more areas of our life where we feel weary and burdened.

I was greatly encouraged by the words of Oswald Chambers:

“The questions that matter in life are remarkably few, and they are all answered by the words, ‘Come unto Me.’

Not – ‘Do this, or don’t do that,’ but – ‘Come unto Me.’ Personal contact with Jesus alters everything.”

Do you believe that? Personal contact with Jesus alters everything. If you are anything like me, you will find countless things to piddle around doing in an attempt to feel productive or put an abundance of importance on completing certain tasks. All the while, we refuse to go to the Source of life, the well which never dries, the One who gives us purpose, even as He offers us the only things that will endure: life, peace, and rest.

Many of us will argue, “I don’t need more rest.” I need something to do. I need purpose. I need to be productive. Yet, this rest that Jesus offers is not one of inaction or additional time to laze around. Jesus promises to give us rest when and if we respond as He beckons us, “Come to Me.”

“‘I will give you rest,’ means I will get you out of bed, out of the languor and exhaustion, out of the state of being half-dead while you are alive; I will imbue you with the Spirit of life, and you will be stayed by the perfection of vital activity.” ~Oswald Chambers

We have access to a God who desires deep, rich, meaningful relationship with us. We have purpose not because of what we do but because of who we are. We are defined by a God who made us in His image. He proclaims each and everyone of us is: chosen, unconditionally loved, accepted, forgiven, and made for a purpose.

What is keeping you from heeding his request, “Come to Me”? I can assure you of a peace, rest, and a firm footing for the day ahead of you, as you respond to His appeal.

Leave with God what only God can do. ~Elisabeth Elliott

I so resonate with aspects of what you have shared ~ during this time, I have been trying to abide in Him more, daily, but I am
challenged by having my heart remain in Him; in His peace throughout the day and evenings. I am thankful for His patience and love. He is not giving up in transforming my heart and mind, and I am so grateful. Praise be to our good, and gracious Father, who is actively at work, in His grace, power and wisdom!

Dear S.S.,
What a wonderful reminder!
I love OC’s writing – “I will get you out of bed”…
How lovely to start each day before getting out of bed in His presence; coming “unto” Him first; gazing on His beauty, resting in His arms , LISTENING to His words of encouragement -Knowing this day is in His hands and I am in the “I AM”!!!
Hallelujah!!
Thank you!

Lois, isn’t Oswald Chamber so poignant and wonderfully challenging? With so little quiet in my current days and a flood of feeling over-stimulated, I have been compelled more than ever to meet with God first thing. This doesn’t always happen. Yet, when it does, how differently the day can go. Thanks for your feedback, Susie

I so identify with this post. I do have all I need even being on lockdown at the place I live. Reading about all the needs politically, physically , emotionally and definitely spiritually, I felt overwhelmed. I ask the Lord “what can I do, I want to help”. It seemed the Lord said “just be”. To me that sure also means Him saying “come to Me”. Wow. His rest, His peace, be still and know He is God! Lord, may I learn to wait in silence before You, silence my mind and heart that I might “just be” before Your throne of grace. I love You, Lord, I yearn for Your Presence! In Jesus Holy , mighty name Amen

Mary Jean, silence in His presence has become a healing balm during these unprecedented times. There is so much noise sweeping around each one of us. I have longed for the quiet in order that His voice might be louder than mine, louder than the worlds, in these days. Thank you for sharing your beautiful prayer. Gratefully, Susie

Loved this! Oswald Chambers said it all simply for us to follow the admonition of the Lord to “Come unto Me”. For me I add to that and keep on coming! We can never be too close to Him!
Thank you for writing this!

Thank for your thoughts on rest. Many years ago I found the only place for rest was at the feet of Jesus. He has been that friend that sticks closer than a brother. He truly is all that the WORD says He is and more. ” I will keep thy at perfect peace who’s imaginations are stead on me.’ He is faithful to be the all sufficient God in all situations.

Toni, thank you for sharing the beloved truth that perfect peace can only be found when our minds are stayed on Him. So often, my mind is everywhere else. Good word! Thank you, Susie

Beautiful word. Thank you for posting this.

“How precious is your loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And give them drink from the river of pleasures.
For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

– Psalm 36:7-9

Keri, it is my delight to hopefully encourage even just one individual to seek the Lord wholeheartedly. I love your reminder from Psalm 36, we are abundantly satisfied with fullness and in God is a wealth of pleasure. Thank you for sharing His truth, Susie
