Recent videos circulating online reveal that U.S. immigration officers are using facial recognition technology in the field — scanning faces of people they stop on the street or pull over in cars, sometimes without clear cause or legal justification.

The technology, reportedly linked to a government app called Mobile Fortify, draws from a vast database of over 200 million images from federal and state agencies. Critics warn it could identify not only individuals but also their families and associates.

In one instance, Border Patrol officers in Chicago scanned the face of a teenage boy on his bicycle after he said he had no ID. “Can you do facial?” one officer asked another, who then lifted his phone and pointed it at the boy. The technology quickly returned the boy’s name — all without a warrant or consent.

The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on how or why the technology is being deployed. CBP, however, confirmed it uses Mobile Fortify to “enhance the effectiveness of agents on the ground.” Civil liberties experts have called it “dystopian creep,” pointing to how such surveillance blurs the line between legitimate law enforcement and unconstitutional overreach.
