Six months into ongoing tensions with Iran, the Trump administration is considering a new military strategy that could keep American forces engaged in the Strait of Hormuz for the foreseeable future. Following the first U.S. military strikes against Iran since July, officials are reportedly weighing a plan to periodically target Iranian missile and radar capabilities before Tehran can rebuild them, a strategy one official described as “mowing the lawn.” As the region remains on edge, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee is calling on Americans to recognize the deeper spiritual dimension behind the conflict.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the president simplified his strategy.

“That doesn’t mean we won’t smack them,” he explained. “We’ll see what happens. But we have the Strait of Hormuz in extremely good shape. You know, we’re taking over – many, many ships got through last night, as you know, with the Navy’s assistance. And we’ve been averaging 30 ships a night. That’s a lot.”

Trump repeated his vow that Tehran will never have a nuclear weapon. However, he quickly dismissed the idea of using one against Iran.

Oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has rebounded to roughly two-thirds of pre-war levels, according to Gulf News. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has called on Gulf States to unite against what he describes as their “real enemy,” America and Israel. The rhetoric coming from Tehran has only heightened concerns among U.S. allies in the region about the trajectory of the conflict and the potential for it to widen further.

Speaking from Jerusalem to the Republican Jewish Coalition Leadership Summit in Las Vegas, Ambassador Huckabee cautioned that the conflict with Iran cannot be understood through politics or military strategy alone. “This is not just a horizontal issue, left versus the right; this is also a vertical issue. This is good versus evil, and we need to begin to frame the fact that some of what we’re saying is not a geopolitical battle and economic battle or military battle or P.R. battle. It is a spiritual battle between the forces of darkness and the forces of light,” Huckabee said. Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter echoed similar concerns at the summit, pointing to recent rhetoric from Qatari state media calling for the removal of Jews “from the Earth” and arguing that such extremist messaging, not diplomatic institutions, is what must be confronted directly.

The summit also highlighted growing unease over Turkey’s expanding role in the region. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and nuclear-armed Pakistan held their first high-level meeting Monday under the new Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, a pact Turkey has suggested could grow further. While Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan insisted the alliance is not aimed at any particular country, he also referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “common enemy of humanity” during the same meeting, raising questions about Turkey’s true intentions. Huckabee said he hopes Turkey ultimately becomes a stabilizing force in the region, but acknowledged that such statements complicate that hope.

Ambassador Huckabee’s framing of this conflict as a spiritual battle “between the forces of darkness and the forces of light” reflects a truth Scripture affirms: our struggle “is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). As tensions with Iran persist and rhetoric calling for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people grows louder, we are called to stand firmly behind Israel’s right to exist and defend itself while praying earnestly for wisdom for American and Israeli leaders. Let us pray for protection over the Strait of Hormuz and all who serve there, for God to expose and restrain evil intentions among Israel’s enemies, and for peace to prevail where only He can bring it.
