How Many Lawmakers Claim Christian Faith?
A new Congress is now in place in Washington. How many of these lawmakers are Christians?
From The Christian Post. A “God gap” exists among members of the incoming 119th Congress, despite Protestants and Catholics dominating the religious affiliation of both parties, according to a recent report.

CQ Roll Call published an analysis on Monday of the religious affiliation of the 119th Congress, which was elected last November and begins its sessions on Friday.
Roll Call found that while 98% of Republican members identified as Christian, only 75% of Democrats or members who caucus with Democrats identified as Christian.
Five Republican members did not identify as Christian, while 66 Democrats did not identify as Christian. Additionally, while only one Republican — Rep. Dave Taylor of Ohio — identified as religiously unaffiliated, 21 Democrats did not list an official religious affiliation.
Ryan Burge, a professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University who has written extensively about religion in America, referred to the differences as a “God gap.”
Burge was quoted by Roll Call as noting that Republicans “could just say they’re a Christian, they’re a person of faith,” and this “turns off almost no one in their party.”
“I think [Democrats’] calculation is ‘if I don’t give an answer, I’m not going to make anybody mad,’” said Burge. “For the Republicans, it’s ‘if I don’t say I’m Christian, I will make a lot of people mad.’”
The analysis did not include Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who, while reelected to his seat last year, later announced that he was resigning from Congress.
Roll Call also found that, as in past years, Protestants made up the majority of religious adherents in Congress for both parties. Roman Catholicism was the largest religious affiliation, with 83 Democrats and 68 Republicans identifying as such.
Religious affiliation in Congress is higher than the general population in the U.S., with Roll Call noting that while 95% of congressional lawmakers are religiously affiliated, less than 70% of Americans are the same, according to the Pew Research Center.
“Congress represents America as it looked 20 or 30 years ago, not the way it looks today,” Burge told Roll Call. “Incumbency advantage keeps people in office that were elected … some of them in the ’80s, in the ’90s, when America was overwhelmingly a religious country.”
In the elections last November, Republicans maintained a narrow majority of the House of Representatives while regaining control of the Senate, giving the GOP control over both houses of Congress and the White House come inauguration day.

Heavenly Father, we lift up to You our lawmakers. May Your Spirit guide and direct each one of them daily. Let Romans 1:16-17 be a guiding light for each of them. “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first the Jew, then the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Your word is true and amen. Thank You LORD. In Jesus might name. Amen.
Christians in America have had a chequered political history. Apart from the recently exposed child abuse by clergy the longer history is not good. Christians took the land and the destroyed the people to whom God had given the land – the indigenous people of America. And we have had Christians promoting rebellion (then and recently), slavery, civil war, KKK, segregation, discrimination, lynching, etc. Christians defending and promoting the indefensible
Perhaps for legislators a check list such as Paul gives for supervisors may suit better – than ‘Christian’ affiliation bearing in mind that the US does not have a official religion (or Christian Constitution):
1. husband of one wife
2. temperate
3. self controlled
4. respectable
5. not given to much wine
6. not violent but gentle
7. not a lover of money
8. of good reputation.
As Paul wrote to Timothy. The article even mentioned Matt Gaetz who was nominated for Attorney General!
How Many Lawmakers Claim Christian Faith?
If we claim to have fellowship with Him while we are walking in the darkness, we are lying and not living out the truth. 1 John 1:6
Everyone who denies the Son is also without the Father, but the person who acknowledges the Son has the Father as well. 1 John 2:23
Romans 13:1-3 Everyone is to obey the governing authorities. For there is no authority that is not from God, and the existing authorities have been placed where they are by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities is resisting what God has instituted; and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are no terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you like to be unafraid of the person in authority? Then simply do what is good, and you will win his approval;
Dear Lord and Father God, I pray You will place a call upon every member of Congress. May those who love You, demonstrate the mind of Christ in every deliberation and plan. May those who say they know You, be greatly influenced to lead in righteousness and justice, by these brothers and sisters in Christ May those who deny You be compelled by You to follow the lead of these brothers and sisters in Christ. May the Aroma of Christ permeate the entirety of the House of Representatives, Congress, as well as every person appointed to serve in the upcoming administration. I seek Your governance Lord, please lead these men and women into good conduct and may their good lead the citizens of this nation to be the same. I ask this and so much more in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen
Lord, cause every one of our lawmakers who do not know you to be confronted with the Biblical Christian legacy which proclaims Jesus only as the way, the truth, the life and only Lord of the universe that they desperately need every hour! May they see your holiness, their own sinfulness. In every office of government give a deeper conviction of sin and a more thorough Spirit of repentance bringing revival across the nation into every church, home and government office with the result of hundreds of thousands of souls transferred into the kingdom of your son whom you love.
Lord we ask that you’ll take your ground in the Senate bring down our country, s spiritual enemies that seek to destroy your people for were not able to fight this battle on our own but in Christ Jesus we will prevail for your not a man that you should lie greater is he who lives in us then he who lives in this world in Jesus name by the power of the Holy Spirit to God be the Glory amen!
We pray Lord.
That those who know you will stand up and tell others. That congress will share their faith openly and stand for you my lord
