The Iran-backed Houthi insurgents of Yemen declared “a complete and total ban on Israeli maritime navigation” through the Red Sea on Monday.

“We consider all enemy movements to be legitimate military targets for our armed forces,” the Houthis warned.

“Escalation will be met with escalation, and our operations will intensify in accordance with developments,” said Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, vowing to act “in coordination with the axis of jihad and resistance,” meaning Iran’s network of terrorist proxies across the Middle East.

The announcement follows months of growing instability in the region. During the 2023-2025 Gaza War, the Houthis repeatedly targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea, forcing many shipping companies to reroute around the southern tip of Africa. Those attacks significantly increased transportation costs and disrupted global supply chains. Since the launch of Operation Epic Fury against Iran earlier this year, the Houthis have repeatedly threatened to resume similar operations.

Of particular concern is the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The route has become increasingly important since Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil shipments to be redirected through Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea pipeline network. According to ship-tracking data cited in the report, oil traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb nearly doubled between February and April, making the route even more critical to global energy markets.

Security experts warn that the Houthis may not need to launch a sustained campaign to create economic disruption. Even a small number of successful attacks against commercial vessels could drive up insurance costs and discourage shipping companies from using the route. Some analysts fear that simultaneous disruptions in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb could place extraordinary pressure on international trade and energy supplies.

The Houthis also claimed responsibility for missile attacks targeting central Israel, describing the strikes as retaliation for Israeli operations against Iranian-backed forces in Lebanon, Iran, and Gaza. The attacks came amid a broader exchange of missile fire involving Iran and Israel, underscoring the increasingly coordinated nature of Tehran’s regional proxy network.
