Despite the gravity of the recent tragic shootings, we cannot let our legislators strip away our constitutional rights in the name of safety.

Analysis. From Liberty Counsel Action. A gun control bill passed the U.S. House, and late last night, 10 Republican senators signaled their support for a compromise.

Gun restrictions and gun-free zones harm law-abiding citizens. A study covering 1950 to 2022 found that 96% of mass shootings occurred in gun-free zones.

Tyranny does not accept opposing views. It demands absolute control. No dissent is permitted. To fully implement tyranny, the tyrant must disarm the people. In 1982, a Senate report reviewed the history of the Second Amendment and what was behind the thinking of the framers. They experienced tyranny and read about its ugly assault on human dignity throughout history. The Second Amendment is not about the government having its own army. Every dictator has one. It’s about the rights of the people to keep and bear arms.

The problem with gun control or gun-free zones is that they invite violence because they advertise that no one will be able to stop a shooter.

The El Paso Walmart gunman advised others to pick gun-free locations: “Remember: it is not cowardly to pick low hanging fruit … Attack low security targets … Do not throw away your life on an unnecessarily dangerous target. If a target seems too hot [i.e., with armed people], live to fight another day.”

In addition, the Columbine shooter opposed concealed carry permits … right before his rampage.

Now a bill is progressing through Congress that would establish a law that would classify even some smaller concealed carry handguns as “high capacity.” If it passes, it will ban them across America. Some Republicans appear to support a compromise on this as well!

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell directed John Cornyn (R-TX) to lead negotiations with Democrats. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) are also waffling and negotiating a compromise with the Democrats!

Gun control laws do NOT stop violence. I want to share the perfect illustration. A man recently drove from California to D.C. to assassinate Justice Kavanaugh … and not a single one of the local gun control laws stopped his deadly plans.

Oddly enough, the attempted shooter admitted that part of his anger was because he wanted MORE gun control measures, and he acted because he thought Justice Kavanaugh might rule against them. But his own actions illustrate exactly how and why laws are absolutely worthless at stopping a shooter. The only thing that stopped him was when he saw armed guards standing outside Justice Kavanaugh’s home.

However, Congress is working right now to make it even harder for you to have the one thing that actually stopped this shooter … a good man or woman with a gun.

We are facing very serious threats to our Second Amendment freedoms right now. Many of the legislators in Congress can and do hire armed guards. But most Americans can’t afford that. We are the ones who will be harmed the most by these worthless and even dangerous restrictions….

My heart breaks for the families of the victims of the recent shootings, but when we are looking at changing policies, we must consider the impact such changes will have on freedom. A basic first question is whether a policy change will be effective. We must also consider history:

• China established gun control in 1935. And 65 million were killed during Mao’s bloody revolution.
• The USSR said guns could not be carried in 1917. The next year they were rounded up. At least 20 million were killed in the Soviet Union.
• Guns are still banned in North Korea under the communist regime, and around 2 million people have been killed by their own government.
• When the Khmer Rouge took over in Cambodia, the brutal regime killed between 1.7 million and 2 million people. Guns were and remain unavailable to Cambodia’s citizens.
• And the list continues …

America only exists because of the arms of the people. The American Revolution would not have happened if the people were disarmed. The Second Amendment is based on history. An armed citizenry is essential to liberty.

Fast-forward to today. Now, politicians want to use your tax dollars to get one step closer to grabbing your guns….

In 2008, candidate Barack Obama spoke of “bitter” Americans who “cling to guns or religion.” Ironically, in this one statement, Obama cited—perhaps inadvertently—the two biggest threats to our freedom: the destruction of the First and Second Amendments to the Constitution.

We cannot give up the core freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution, and especially the Bill of Rights. These rights have never been more necessary than now….
