Shery Washington and her husband Dexter are no strangers to governmental intercession. Sheryl served on an advisory committee for her mayor and has prayed with different mayors of different cities. She has always had the heart to pray for governmental leaders. She and Dexter faithfully host a prayer line for their state. It will be 18 years in April. In 2022, Intercessors for America was seeking a state prayer leader in Mississippi. Dexter and Sheryl wanted to assist them in their search and reached out to IFA. After being out of town for a week, they received an invitation from IFA to be the Mississippi State Prayer Leaders. The rest is history.

Sheryl believed this to be a God-given opportunity for the next chapter of praying for governmental leaders. She and Dexter lead, alongside Co-State Leader Erika Bryant, over a team of faithful intercessors.

Sheryl has wanted to connect with her State Representative, Becky Currie, for several years.  She wrote the bill for the Dobbs case that was instrumental in the overturning of Roe v. Wade. 

At IFA’s 50th anniversary in 2023, Representative Currie was one of the keynote speakers. “The event was very busy, a lot was going on, and I wasn’t able to speak with her. For the next couple of years, I was unable to connect with her, but continued to pray,” Sheryl said. 

He Gives Us the Desires of Our Hearts

In September 2025, She Leads Mississippi extended an invitation to Sheryl as an honoree. “Representative Currie not only signed off the certificate, but she also handed me the award. I had no idea she would be there.” She told me, “I heard IFA was here. I have been looking for you, and I told her we have been looking forward to meeting you,” Sheryl said. 

“We were able to talk and exchange information. Rep. Currie has come on our Mississippi prayer calls and caught us up on what is going on. She asked for prayers for the bills she is writing for proper basic healthcare in Mississippi’s correctional facilities. She has also been chosen to be the president of the elections committee.”

“She has continued on our prayer calls and has kept us updated on the process. We received an invitation to pray at the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson on February 24, 2026. We were joined by IFA’s Regional Director, Lisa Townsend. We met with another group of intercessors who pray at the Capitol every Tuesday. Everyone was very welcoming to us. We were able to pray over each bill by number; there were five in total. Although Representative Currie was unavailable due to being in committee meetings, we were able to intercede for her and her colleagues as they prepared to present these bills.”

Representative Currie has been rallying support for righteous bills concerning the corrections industry. She shared with Sheryl that in the last legislative session, every bill was struck down. 

She said that when she asked IFA MS for a prayer covering, she witnessed the difference in this current session.

The Wind Is Shifting 

“We see this as an open door for God in the Mississippi State Capitol. We are seeing legislators appreciative of us being there. More and more, I have noticed that lawmakers are not ashamed of their faith. They are not ashamed to ask for prayer, not ashamed to come back and say thank you,” Sheryl said. 

Representative Currie also expressed to Sheryl that she is setting aside time exclusively for IFA’s Mississippi Prayer team. This is concerning the resolution for IFA’s American Spiritual Heritage Project. She wants to rededicate the Capitol of Mississippi back to God. Thank you, Jesus!

“I believe we are witnessing a shift in our nation regarding prayer. I feel like more intercessors are rising and paying attention. People are seeing results from the intercession. We are seeing justice in places where we have been praying and in places where we have never expected to, and it’s because we stand in the gap,” Sheryl said. 

From Prayer to Prophecy Being Fulfilled

“Six years ago, during a time of prayer at our church. The Holy Spirit told us he was going to rewrite the history of Mississippi. We see it happening; we have heard more reports of people coming from the north to visit us. I read an article that said people in Mississippi are among the friendliest when compared with those in other states. We get along with others. Mississippi has always had a stronghold here. With the Civil War, civil rights, we have always had a rough history with race. But we are seeing God at work. He said He would rewrite history, he’s doing it, and we love it,” Sheryl said. 

Our prayers for those in authority are never in vain. As Sheryl stated, something has shifted. More and more leaders are asking for prayers and are welcoming intercessors into their space to pray with and for them. They recognize the favor of the Lord they bring. IFA has shared many state leader stories just as encouraging as this. If you have ever felt that interceding for those in government is not producing fruit, please think again. A State Representative wants to rededicate her state to God. She is most likely one of many, and if that is not a reason to praise God, I don’t know what is. 

With every invitation to intercessors is an open door to see the Lord exalted in our government. It’s an open door to see prayer work in the lives of our Representatives and elected officials, for whom they are praying. Sheryl is an ordinary woman who believes in the power of prayer for our governmental leaders, and God has opened the doors for her and the whole state prayer group to be a part of something extraordinary. The invitation is for all who are willing. Join a state prayer group, send a handwritten prayer card to your state’s leaders, and go to the Capitol to pray with other intercessors. IFA offers you several ways to connect with other like-minded intercessors. All it takes is your yes. 

Father, we thank you for how You are moving the hearts of our Representatives to reach out to intercessors and build relationships. We thank You for every opportunity to intercede for our leaders and righteous legislation. We thank you for Representative Currie and her heart to dedicate her state to you. We pray for favor over each of her bills that will bring healthcare to correctional facilities. 

We pray for our leaders who are not saved to come to know you personally. The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like a river you turn it wherever you wish. Turn the hearts of our leaders who do not know Jesus. Do what only you can do. We pray into this season of favor and open doors for intercessors to engage with leaders, and we ask for more connections, more opportunities, more invitations. We pray for an acceleration of righteous legislation, so that what once took years would be swift, in Jesus’ name, amen.
