Answered Prayer! FDA to Review Safety of Abortion Pill
In a prior article, Intel for Intercessors – HHS Dream Team, I wrote about our hope and prayers as intercessors for FDA Administrator, Dr. Marty Makary, who is pro-life, to ban the abortion pill mifepristone responsible for 63% of abortions in America.
In a first and vital step to potentially banning mifepristone, Dr. Makary announced on June 3rd his commitment to a new safety review of the drug.
“As the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, I am committed to conducting a review of mifepristone and working with the professional career scientists at the Agency who review this [new] data.”
This is an answer to prayer.
How Mifepristone Works
Mifepristone is an evil drug that blocks a woman’s natural hormone progesterone, which is needed for a pregnancy to continue. It’s the first drug in a two-drug cocktail. Mifepristone shrivels the lining of the womb, literally starving the unborn baby to death. The second drug is misoprostol which causes contractions expelling the baby from the womb.
Over the years, the FDA has lifted the health safeguards of mifepristone. As a result, woman often experiences the abortion in her home, alone and not in a medical setting, which puts her health at greater risk.
A Brief History of Mifepristone and the FDA
Mifepristone was first approved by the FDA in 2000 under the Clinton administration when an unwanted pregnancy was first classified as a “serious or life-threatening” illness – a grievous lie by the enemy.
Originally, mifepristone could only be used during the first seven weeks of pregnancy. A prescription by a medical doctor was required after three office visits. The drug had to be administered in a medical clinic, doctor’s office, or hospital with a doctor present. A post-follow up medical exam was required within 7 days after taking the drug and any adverse events must be reported.
In 2016 under the Obama FDA, mifepristone use was extended to 10 weeks of pregnancy and prescription was now available through nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants. Patient follow up was extended from 7 to 14 days and adverse events, except deaths, no longer had to be reported.
In 2021, under the cover of Covid, Biden’s FDA eliminated the requirement for the drug to be taken in person in a clinic, office or hospital. Women could now self-administer the drug at home after ordering it through a mail-order pharmacy. Only one telehealth appointment is required to get the prescription, and follow up exams are now optional.
Currently, 14 states ban all abortions. In states where abortions remain legal, restrictions on medical abortions exist. For instance, states require pills to be prescribed by a doctor. Others require an in-person visit with a doctor before prescribing. Arizona and North Carolin ban the mailing of abortion pills.
The issue of mifepristone access and use has also been embroiled in legal battles for the past three years.
The Supreme Court Case
In 2022, a group of pro-life doctors and medical associations, calling themselves The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine sued the FDA. Their name is taken from the Hippocratic Oath doctors are required to take upon receiving their medical degree promising to… “First, do no harm.”
The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA lawsuit claimed the FDA had overstepped their authority by approving mifepristone in 2000, and then further overstepped by eliminating safety restrictions for easier mifepristone access, thereby harming women.
In 2023, Texas District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk invalidated the 2000 FDA approval. The FDA appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
The Fifth Circuit ruled too much time had passed to challenge the 2000 initial approval, but the Court did rule the 2016 and 2021 FDA’s expansions were unlawful and access should return to 2000 safeguards.
Biden’s FDA appealed to the Supreme Court, which stayed the appeals court decision and agreed to hear the case.
In June 2024, in a 9-0 opinion, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the FDA. They decided to uphold the 2000 FDA’s approval of mifepristone and declare the Alliance had no standing to bring the case against the FDA’s 2016 and 2021 changes to mifepristone access.
However, the Supreme Court ruled only on the standing of the Alliance and not on the underlying safety issues raised by the plaintiffs.
In response, the red states of Idaho, Missouri and Kansas filed a lawsuit against the FDA in January 2025 to restrict mifepristone in the U.S., and nullify the FDA’s post 2016 rulings. The lawsuit claims the FDA’s actions to increase access to mifepristone allows pills to be mailed to their states undercutting their abortion bans.
Meanwhile, in February of 2025, twelve blue states have sued the FDA to stop any further federal restriction on mifepristone. And so, the legal battle continues.
Access to mifepristone is still illegal in the states with abortion bans and mifepristone restrictions, although underground networks mail abortion pills to women living in states where it is illegal.
For instance, in my state of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Medication Abortion Access Project conducts “pill-packing parties” sending abortion pills in white priority mail packages to women in states where access to mifepristone is banned or restricted.
The abortion pill is hailed as “safe and effective” by abortion advocates, including the American Medical Association. But pro-life medical personnel disagree.
1 in 10 Women Have Serious Complications
New medical research conducted by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) concluded the abortion pill does harm women. This is the largest-known study of real-world incidents of the abortion pill based on insurance data.
Since the reporting of adverse events of mifepristone is no longer required, the study analyzed insurance claims that includes 865,727 prescribed mifepristone abortions from 2017 to 2023.
According to the data, women who had mifepristone abortions, 10.93% of them experienced severe life-threatening complications, such as sepsis, infection, and hemorrhaging. That’s 22 times higher than the current FDA-approved drug label which claims only 0.5% on women have adverse effects. Women also have died as a result of a mifepristone abortion.
Planned Parenthood dishonestly claims mifepristone is safer than Tylenol. But the data shows that’s not true. One in ten women taking mifepristone suffer a serious adverse reactions compared to 1 in 10,000 for Tylenol users.
The American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs (AAPLOG) claim that relaxing regulations around mifepristone puts women at greater risk. About half of the women who suffer a serious adverse event end up in emergency rooms. They conclude…
“The further along the woman is in her pregnancy, the larger and more developed her unborn child is, and the greater the risk of complications from the abortion pill, such as retained fetal parts. By tightening gestational age limits and requiring the doctor to accurately assess gestational age before prescribing the pill, the FDA can reduce the risk of harm to the woman.”
Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, medication abortions now account for 63% of abortions in the U.S. That means almost 653,000 babies died from mifepristone in a single year.
Naturally, the pro-abortion crowd called the EPPC study “junk science.” Are they putting politics over women’s safety? Of course they are.
Dr. Makary Promises to Take Action
Fortunately Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr promised in his confirmation hearing to ask the FDA and NIH to look at the safety of mifepristone. He said…
“It’s against everything we believe in this country that patients or doctors should not be reporting adverse events. We need to know what adverse events are. We need to understand the safety of every drug — mifepristone and every other drug.”
Back in April of this year at the Semafor World Economy Conference, FDA Commissioner Makary stated “he had no plans to take action” or restrict the availability of mifepristone. Currently the FDA considers mifepristone “safe and effective”.
But Dr. Makary also said at the conference that “There is an ongoing set of data that is coming into the FDA on mifepristone. So if the data suggests something or tells us that there’s a real signal, we can’t promise we’re not going to act on that data.”
In light of EPPC’s new data into mifepristone’s safety, HHS Sec. Kennedy in May asked the FDA for a complete review of the new data and to report back. Sec. Kennedy called the study’s findings “alarming”.
“Clearly [the study] indicates, at the very least, that the [FDA] label should be changed,” Sec. Kennedy said.
Dr. Makary said, “The FDA is committed to safeguarding public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of the products it regulates… As with all drugs, FDA continues to closely monitor the postmarking safety data on mifepristone.”
Let’s pray for the ending of abortion with a mifepristone ban which kills over 650,000 babies last year.
“I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish… I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life.” (Deuteronomy 30:15-20}
Let Us Pray
Lord, we thank you for answered prayer that Dr. Makary and the FDA will conduct a thorough review of mifepristone to expose the truth of this deadly and evil abortion pill. We ask that hearts and minds are changed by the results of their review and for Your will to be done.
- Pray for Sec. Kennedy and FDA Commissioner Makary that they will be bold in their determination to review the danger of mifepristone to women’s health and decide to ban the use of mifepristone due to safety concerns.
- Pray for Holy Spirit to enlighten those who are deceived about the evil of abortion and especially the lie that the use of the abortion pill is “safe and effective”.
- Pray for women experiencing unplanned or unwanted pregnancies to choose life for their babies. Pray God will guide them to Crisis Pregnancy Centers where they can discover the truth about life in the womb and God’s divine plan for them and their babies. Pray for wisdom, grace, and protection for all those who work at CPCs.
- Pray for our leaders in Congress and those in positions of power to make laws that protect life – a pregnant woman’s health and life, and her unborn baby’s life. Pray our leaders will promote a culture of life beginning with banning mifepristone. Pray for judges and justices to rule according to God’s will and protect women and babies instead of destroying them.
- Pray for those who advocate for abortion that they will hear and understand God’s truth on choosing life and turn away from the wickedness of abortion. Pray that every abortion supporter will be transformed into a supporter of life.
- Pray that the mifepristone pills will be lost in the mail and delayed far beyond their 10-week limit. Pray that during the time of waiting for their pills that a woman’s heart will soften towards her unborn child and she will desire to give birth to her baby.
- Pray for all who are pro-life to help stop the spread of misinformation and share with many the deadly consequences of mifepristone, not only to the unborn, but to women as well. Pray that scientific, biological and moral truth will overcome political positions. Pray for pro-lifers to courageously and boldly stand for human life with our friends, family and communities.

Let their mouths cry out in praise and adoration of You to silence the enemy and the avenger! In Jesus’s mighty name, amen

Excellent review and call to prayer!
This is an extremely well written and clear summary of this evil drug and its current legal standing. As a general medical physician, I have seen the serious side effects of this drug in patients. The article does not mention the psychological trauma and physical pain associated with watching your baby’s parts cramp into the toilet, because the FDA does not consider that at all. We pray and agree for the mighty boldness ofvGod by His Holy Spirit dor our new FDA director and HHS director. Let them be wiley as snakes and gentle as doves. God, give us victory over this issue in our country. Let our women turn to you in their fears and distresses, not an easy fix.Let the church arise in strenth and unity and real resources in supporting life.
Excellent points Noelle !! Interceding with you indeed !!
