UPDATE: Senator Mullin was confirmed late last night to serve as the next Secretary of Homeland Security. Let’s pray for him!

On Sunday, the Senate voted to advance the President’s nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin to head the Department of Homeland Security. Surprising many, however, is a certain Democrat who voted with Republicans in favor of the nominee.

From the Daily Caller:

The Senate on Sunday advanced President Donald Trump’s nomination of Republican Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, bolstered by the surprise support of one Democrat who considers the nominee his friend.

The Senate voted 54-37 during a rare Sunday session to invoke cloture on Mullin’s nomination to succeed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, teeing up a final confirmation vote expected Monday or Tuesday, according to The Hill. While Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman‘s “yes” vote was expected, a second Democrat — New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich — also bucked his party to advance Mullin’s nomination in a surprise development.

“This is going to surprise some people, but I consider Markwayne Mullin a friend. We have a very honest and constructive working relationship,” Heinrich, a third-term member of the upper congressional chamber, wrote in a statement justifying the vote. “We have authored legislation together, such as the Tribal Buffalo Management Act, and we crafted the Legislative Branch Appropriations bill together this year. We often disagree and when we do, we work to find whatever common ground we share.”

Senator Heinrich highlighted Senator Mullin’s character, stressing their “constructive working relationship.” The Democrat Senator lamented how he has “under this and the previous Trump Administration … lacked any constructive relationship with the Secretary of Homeland Security.” He also recognized that Senator Mullin “is not someone who can simply be bullied into changing his views,” adding later that he hoped his colleague would not “take [his] orders from Stephen Miller.”

Senators John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich were the only Democrats to vote in favor. To many, this is an answered prayer. For years now, Senator Fetterman has served as a powerful display of bipartisanship in Congress, siding with Republicans on issues that truly matter. Intercessors have prayed that another senator would join him, and Senator Heinrich may just be an answer to those prayers.

Let’s thank God for Senator Heinrich’s efforts to cross the aisle, and let’s pray for Senator Markwayne Mullin as the Senate votes on whether or not to make him the next Secretary of Homeland Security.

Lord Jesus, may Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven regarding Mr. Mullins. The fact that two Dems actually voted for him is encouraging, considering the extreme polarization that is happening between Dems and Republicans.. I pray that Markwayne Mullins will indeed be voted in for this position, in accordance with Your will. Thank You Jesus.

“…We find encouragement through the Scriptures and a call to perseverance that will produce hopeful living. I pray that our God, who calls you and gives you perseverance and encouragement, will join all of you together to share one mind according to Jesus the Anointed. In this unity, you will share one voice as you glorify the one True God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, our Liberating King. Romans 15:4-6 The Voice

Dear Heavenly Father, You have long heard our prayers for unity and for “the elected” to work in conformity with what is good and right. I always find encouragement through the Scripture and through it, we are called to perseverance and hope. I pray that You, who calls us and gives us perseverance and encouragement, will join all of us together to share one mind according to Jesus Christ. In this unity, I pray we will share one voice and glorify You, the one True God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed and Liberating King. You created all that has life, breath and existence. You are the One who told me I cannot ask too much of You but I can believe too little. This is a BIG prayer for a BIG need but I believe You will call more to work together for our common good. I am so thankful for Your Faithfulness and I am praying in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen

We give You thanks, Father, for these two who crossed the “party” line to accomplish a task agreeably. Lord, let this be a sign to others in both parties that joining together for a common cause that is right and good moves business along. Let there be more that “leave” their party to do what is right. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Thank you, Jesus, for Senator Heinrich’s willingness to cross party lines. I live in New Mexico and am grateful for his voting to confirm Secretary Mullin. We truly need more bipartisanship in Congress.
