I Prayed have prayed
Father, we lift up the upcoming midterm elections before you. Strengthen us in our intercession, God, and help us to pray not for what we want, but for Your will to be done.
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Analysis. Last May in Texas an important congressional seat was up for election, and the battle was close. Indeed, a recount was needed before the primary results could be released. Thankfully, the seat was eventually filled by a Democrat who is openly pro-life and who fights for the rights of the citizens of this nation. And yes, I did say Democrat.

Visit your state page to pray.

I have been interceding for Texas, for its leaders, and for election integrity, just like all of you have been doing for your own states. Concerning this one district, I had been praying for the candidate I knew was pro-life, rather than for the other candidate, a progressive Democrat. Once, during my prayer time, Holy Spirit interrupted and corrected me.

“It’s not about their title — Republican or Democrat. Pray that I would be seated, enthroned, in the hearts of those who will come to fill these seats.”

I felt His correction prick my heart. Admittedly, I was praying more for the candidate who had biblical values, but what if the progressive candidate had won? I hadn’t interceded for her with the same fervor.

God is not interested in labels. Republican, Democrat, independent — none of that means to God what it means to us. Some Christian conservatives will see the word Democrat and automatically render a negative judgment, just as some progressives will see conservative or Republican and write that person off. It shouldn’t be this way.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt. 5:43–48).

I realized that my prayers were not rightfully aligned with God’s heart. If I prayed only for the candidates I liked, what reward was there in that? Wasn’t I acting the same as the lost, who look out only for those who think and act as they themselves do? Once I remembered those words of our Lord Jesus, my prayers shifted: It became more important that the candidates be children of God than that they bear any particular label.

I was reminded of this when I saw IFA’s First Friday prayer call with Lance Wallnau. “Our focus has become distorted,” he said of the coming elections. “It is not about Trump returning to office; it is about righteousness being restored to our government and nation. It is about reformation. Trump or DeSantis shouldn’t be our primary concern — we must be prophetically focused on what the Lord is doing. This isn’t about a political victory; this is Christ’s victory.”

How powerful and true is that statement? As the midterm elections draw nearer, we must remain vigilant with our prayers and engagement. But as intercessors, we must also remember where our focus is to be at all times: on the Lord, first and foremost.

When the Lord corrected me during my prayer time, I was reminded that we must never pray with our own earthly reasoning, but with the mind of Christ.

Our Lord taught His disciples to pray by modeling a prayer. We call it the “Our Father” or the Lord’s prayer, and it is probably one of the first prayers many of us memorized as children:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one (Matt. 6:9–13).

How can we use this prayer as a pattern to intercede for our elections and our leaders?

  • Pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. We know that His will is for all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth — even politicians and leaders we don’t like or agree with. Salvation is available to them if they will receive it.
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Tim. 2:1–4).
  • Pray for God to give us the “daily bread” of leaders who do what is right and love justice.
He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord (Ps 33:5).
  • Ask God to forgive our congressional representatives and other leaders who are sinning against Him and against the American people, because He has forgiven us our sins.
When they came to a place called the Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice (Luke 23:33–34 NLT).
  • Ask God to help us forgive leaders who have offended us or acted in evil, immoral, or unwise ways.
“And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses” (Mark 11:25).
  • Ask God to have mercy on our leaders, leading them away from temptation to do wrong.
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 103:8).
  • Pray that we and our leaders would be delivered from evil.
He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars (Dan 2:21).

God is sovereign and can do anything. As intercessors, we continue to stand in the gap on behalf of the lost and this nation. What would happen if we prayed with the heart and mind of Christ for our leaders? What would happen if we prayed in alignment with His will? I don’t know what that would look like, but I do know that there would be a drastic change from what we are seeing now.

Let’s pray:

Father, we praise You for Your goodness and mercy that endures forever. We praise You for Your sovereignty, because of which we know we can trust You. Nothing catches You by surprise.

We lift up our leaders to You, and we pray for those who are running in the coming elections; we pray for those who have not yet received salvation through Jesus Christ.

Father, forgive our leaders who are ignorantly sinning against You; they don’t know what they’re doing. Forgive our leaders who are intentionally sinning against You. Have mercy, Lord. There is no heart too hardened for You to touch. There is no one who is beyond Your reach. Your will is for all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Forgive me, as an intercessor, for the times I failed to realize these things and prayed for my will to be done, and not for Your will to be done. You are called the hope of the nations, and as long as I have You, Jesus, I have a reason to hope. I pray for these coming elections with that in mind. I pray for Your will to be done in America as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Very sad and heartbreaking how divided this country is. No matter what side you’re on you will be attacked. Nobody’s perfect. I’ve seen evil deeds and doings on both sides, yes even in a conservative Christian. Just love one another. Back in the old days we had our differences but that wasn’t like what it was now. I don’t agree with some coworkers, family or friends views and I know they don’t with me and that is OK. It would kill me to lose these people in my life over differences. I don’t want to be hated for who I am and I believe they wouldn’t either. That’s how America should be. In God’s eyes. Can this still happen? Pray for more unity.

Praying always for God’s will to be done, so don’t leave off the last verses of the Lord’s Pray where we are admonished to forgive, or WE WILL NOT BE FORGIVEN. We must always be aware of that especially now as wickedness abounds and people are persecuted and tormented. We must be like our Heavenly Father and forgive even as He has forgiven us our sins. Amen.

This was convicting – thank you. I find it easy to pray for those I love or those I perceive as “on my side.” But we are clearly instructed in God’s word to pray for our enemies, and so I should in obedience, whether I “feel” like doing so or not. I confess, I find it hard to do. And I think of so many in public positions of power currently as enemies, because their policies are destroying this country that I love and these policies are hurting people in so many ways, whether it is loss of businesses, freedoms, safety, ability to buy food and provide shelter etc. So all the more reason to pray for those I consider enemies – God wants me to and no one is beyond His reach. Instead of praying for my side to win an election – praying that the hearts of any and all, whether a “D” or an “R” would be softened and come to know Jesus, is more aligned with His will. We need more God fearing, God honoring individuals in public offices, who will do what is right, irrespective of their political party. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells me to pray for all in authority, not just those I agree with. Thank you for the prayer guide, this will help me as I reluctantly pray for those who have hurt me and my country. With God all things are possible. http://www.mtothe5th.wordpress.com

Thank You, Lord that You are doing a mighty work. We pray Your Kingdom will come, Your will being done in those in authority. We ask You to remove the hardness of hearts in those I who do not know You. Arise Lord, scatter the enemy to the utter most, they cannot hinder Your work. Revive the hearts and refresh them to continue to bring this nation back to honor You.

Jesus is coming back. Will we be ready?

And currently, are we ready to suffer for His Name’s sake? I don’t feel ready or relish the idea, but it is coming and for some folks it is already here. Put on the whole armor of God and be ready to stand against the wiles of the devil. We hear nothing but lies from the media and satan is the father of lies, we must not get sucked in to be on his side. Prov. 3:5-7 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding….

Luke 9:49-50
“Master,” said John, we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us. ”
“Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you. ”
Praying, in JESUS NAME. AMEN

Father God as I prayed this morning these words spoke to me “ Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever” Wisdom and Power are his. God governs the world according to His purposes. You may be dismayed when you see evil people prosper, But God is in control . Allow this knowledge give (You) confidence and peace no matter what happens. Give credit to God. To be very truthful this has been hard for me at times, because of what I have seen and how so many (good) people have been hurt and treated unmercifully, I am then reminded that God knows all, so I just keep praying asking God for wisdom and direction for my life. Gods Will is most important if we ever are to succeed in giving it all to Jesus. Give credit to God. When I pray I tell my Father that we cannot do without him, we cannot achieve anything without Him. Many people take credit which robs God of honor he alone deserves. When I repeat my favorite scripture Phil- 4:13- I can do all things (Through) Christ which strengthens me. I honor God because I need His strength then I can apply Gods strength. To my life Only HE is my strength!!! I would be nothing without Abba Father in my life. I am a take charge kind of person, this is where God comes into my life- I cannot changes lives only God can. So I pray furious, pray loud, pray with emotion and rest in Gods peace reminding God- ok God I have sent prayer your way, releasing my self in your presence so that your WILL Be Done. I can’t do it but I can pray. I want to overload those prayer vessels that are in heaven, so they tip over and start flowing upon people that need these answered prayers. Be blessed and keep praying for our America / & other Nations.

Comments on several points.
1. No, God isn’t a respector of people or labels, but He does expect us to use discernment and the Bible to work & vote for leadership that has at least some modicum of Biblical principles. God gave us this beautiful country and we need to stand for it, standing on Biblical principles.
2. Yes, there are pro-life Dems, but so miniscule a number and/or so cowed that they vote lock-step and pretend to be protective of our rights & privilages.
3. Yes, we pray fervantly for both candidates – the strongest- principled one to win. We work for that candidate, too. Then, when a candidate wins, it is our responsibility & privilage to pray for them, whoever they are. We pray for one to stand firmly, we pray the the eyes & ears be opened with the other.
4. We are responsible to holding brothers/sisters to Biblical qualities & standards. We cannot be judgemental or be responsible for the choices & standards of heathen (used to simplify discussion) as they have hardened hearts & deaf ears.

You might want to rethink your statement regarding (God can do anything) actually, there are things he cannot do. 1) God cannot lie. 2) God cannot break a promise. 3) God cannot break or go back on his word.

Not sure I totally agree with this. I agree it’s not about President Trump., but the Bible does say when the wicked are in power the people groan.; I truly believe God has me praying for righteous leaders and the wicked to be removed

One final comment on my comment. I have a hard time with someone who claims to be a Christian and is a Democrat. They’re supporting a party that kills babies., supports gay marriage and transgenderism. They’re supporting a party that stands for things God hates

AMEN.They are evil to the core. If they do have Biblical values and are for God, then they will change and go with the Republican party which is for Biblical values, morals, stand for Christ and Christ only. Note:::they aren’t “perfect either” but they have the mindset and wisdom to know what is right and what is wrong and evil. God has also sent a delusion ….Repent and change from your evil ways and I will heal your land….says the Lord!

God has brought about the reign of evil kings, etc. I think her point is to pray God’s will be done, not my will be done.

I love the story St. Francis of Assist told of his mother praying, and begging God to keep her son away from Heathen Rome. He said I thank you for answering the prayer of her heart and not her prayer, for it was in the heathen city I saw sin clearly and found you!
I was impressed early on in my walk (41 years September 9th!) that I was to pray God’s will, not my will! It is our heart that matters! Jesus sits at the right hand of our father interceding for us! So, he changed the prayer to fit the heart. This takes all pressure off “to pray right”. There are areas that are obvious and others no so much. God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven!

Ellen., I understand., God has raised up evil Kings.., but they also weren’t elected officials. I just have to disagree ., that God wants politicians in office who kill babies and are demonizing our children. The Bible says when the wicked are in power the people groan…. Righteousness exalts a nation…. And blessed is the nation who’s God is the Lord. We’re to pray His kingdom come and His will to be gone…. I will ALWAYS pray for Godly leaders and for the healing of this nation. The results are up to Him.

“Ask God to forgive our congressional representatives and other leaders who are sinning against Him and against the American people, because He has forgiven us our sins.”

He only forgives those who repent and ask for forgiveness. The unrepentant do NOT get nor deserve forgiveness for turning their backs on God. Nor should they.

There’s so many things I found wrong with what she wrote. We can repent for the sins of our nation., but you’re correct., individuals need to repent for themselves. There’s no such thing as a prolife Democrat. They still vote for abortion with Pelosi every time. There’s so many things about her post that were troubling. In the Psalms and many other places., David and others cried out for the removal of the wicked.

I think what Gloria meant was, God has forgiven our sins and we need to extend that same mercy to our unsaved representatives. Most of those who crucified Jesus didn’t repent (as far as we know), but Jesus still prayed for them to be forgiven.
