The possibility that the Senate might do away with the legislative filibuster is troubling. Some corners of this debate would have you believe that the filibuster is seldom used except to block civil-rights legislation and that its use only accrues to the betterment of the party out of power. Neither is true.
The filibuster is commonly used by senators in both parties. My rough and quick count finds that, in the past three years, at least 30 bills saw failed cloture votes in the Senate. . . .
Unsurprisingly, in many of these instances, more members of the Democratic minority than the Republican majority voted against cloture.
The impact of the filibuster goes far beyond allowing the minority party to stop high-profile proposals.

Because the possibility of the 60-vote threshold in the Senate is known to all parties — the Senate, House, and White House — it subtly shapes the entire legislative process in both chambers, starting from which bills are pursued, to how bills are drafted, to how congressional committees are run.
Several must-pass bills — government appropriations, funding deals, defense authorization — pass the Senate each year. . . .
This type of bipartisan cooperation reflects a fundamental purpose of Congress. My AEI colleague Yuval Levin put it well here on Sunday:
This is a primary purpose of Congress as an institution — to enable and compel accommodation in a divided society. And the fact that accommodation now seems nearly impossible in our politics is a result of Congress’s failure to recognize and serve its purpose more than it is the cause of that failure.
The need to get 60 votes on controversial legislation is one of the few forces that compels this kind of bipartisanship. . . .
It is intended to be a check against majoritarianism. During times when one party controls both houses of Congress and the White House, the filibuster gives the minority at least some voice. From 2017 through 2019, to take just one example, when Republicans had control of the executive and legislative branches, the filibuster stopped President Trump from ramming through laws to reform our immigration system. . . .
Those who would end the filibuster today should consider why they embraced it in the early Trump years.

The founders of our Constitution knew full well the power grab of politicians. Term limit it’s would help and we as Americans should demand them for all politicians. It show be no surprise to anyone who reads what is happening today. We are reaping what we have sown, sadly and we have taken God out of our lives, our churches, institutions and this country. All I can say is pray on your knees and be a voice for what is right. Cancel the ‘cancel culture!’ Who cares what they think…….
Heavenly Father, we are in the midst of evil, turbulent times, but this does not come as a surprise to You. I ask you to please intervene and let the filibuster remain in place. You are in control, Father so please do not let us lose our liberties. America was not founded on Socialist principles; please do not let us become a Socialist nation. We desperately need You, Heavenly Father. May those in power seek Your face for the decisions that must be made.

Lord I pray that this filibuster will not be done away with. Lord please open the eyes and ears of these democrats (and some republicans) and help them to see the truth. May justice and righteousness reign in our nation and I pray that we be bold and courageous for Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Sen. Jeff Merkeley (sp?) replied that the above wasn’t constitutional. I replied that what Governor Kate Brown and Oregon’s state legislature did and didn’t do was unconstitutional with all due respect. I am miffed at his bologna! I wrote to him, “What’s wrong with having to have a Super Majority vote” in order to pass anything? I let him now my prayers and actions are powerful! Lord have mercy!
It’s just another veiled effort by the Democrats to disenfranchise more than half of the American populace. They are so terrified of the Republicans regaining the House & Senate in 2022 that they are trying at all costs to rob us of our critical voice. In California where we are, the Liberal agenda has created a hostile environment for freedom-loving people. This is why so many are leaving our fair state… especially businesses.

As a nation , and a government, this practice needs to remain in place. Lord, by Your mercy and grace, may the filibuster remain intact in our congress. It evidently is but part of the elements of free speech that the Socialists in power are trying to remove. Please Lord, let this, and every attempt to remove free speech, fail miserably!
We need the filibuster in the Senate
The filibuster has been in place for decades for simple reasons of balance. It was put there to ensure that one party does not get drunk on party control, thereby forcing their will upon the majority of citizens in our nation who “oppose and disagree” with what they are trying to do. (I.E. – like the present radical agenda of today’s democratic party).
When any party believes they have the right to force their ideas on the people “without bipartisan discussion and debate”, then that party and their belief system / agenda has officially crossed over to “dictator mentality”. By removing any established and legal criteria that was put in place for the protection of the entire nation, any politician or their party no longer serves the people – they are serving themselves or whatever special interests they have sold out to.
Please let your reps know that YOU require they represent you and keep the filibuster. Contact them both by link and CALL THEM relentlessly. And require they reply to you for your request but also make sure you tell them you don’t want a “scripted form letter reply”!! Be courageous and firm in what you have already been given under our Constitution.
It seems that the filibuster needs to stay in place if only as a layer of protection for freedom of speech. Jesus please have mercy on the United States of America.
