I Prayed have prayed
Father God, this is a good and timely word. May it be like a seed planted in fertile soil that bears one hundred fold fruit in our lives and in the lives of everyone we touch.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

The necessity of a humble heart has never been more apparent in our land. In order for our land to heal, we must first humble ourselves before the Lord (2 Chr 7:14). In order to humble ourselves, we must remove pride.

Someone asked me to write an article about pride.

“I can do that.” I thought. “I have studied humility several times, this should be easy.”

That afternoon, I began to study pride. At first, I didn’t find much that I hadn’t already found when studying humility. That is, until I came upon an online article on pride. This article listed signs of pride in several different areas.

I decided to print it off and study it. This list of signs of pride was thirty-six pages long. Yes, THIRTY-SIX PRINTED PAGES LONG!

I began to read later that night. Oh, my word! This information was not for an article, it was for me, personally. Perhaps for you too.

I want to share one thing this author said with you. He wrote…

“God had been resisting me. It was like his palm was firmly planted on my forehead as I walked through life and it was really uncomfortable. And it was constant. He doesn’t body slam the proud, he just resists them.”

James 4:6 states, Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

The word resist is defined in the Webster’s 1828 Dictionary as “to stand against. To oppose. To strive against. To defeat. To frustrate. To disappoint.”

After reading this short part of that article, I stopped. It was enlightening. It was illuminating. And it was convicting.

I had to ask myself, “In what areas of my life could God be resisting me?” I knew it was there, I just had to find out exactly where it was.

I began to read his thirty-six pages of signs of pride. I found myself in many of them.

That night I asked the Holy Spirit to point out and illuminate every single area of pride in my life. I asked Him to alert me when I spoke things that were rooted in pride. I asked Him to expose pride to me and cause me to see it. I wanted rid of it. All of it. I do not want God resisting me in any area.

God was faithful to answer my prayer. He is daily showing me areas in my heart that still harbor pride. As He does, I repent and move on. The Bible says we speak what is in our hearts. I have only to listen to my own words to see the pride that hides there.

1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I have great hope in that word.

I know as I confess the sin of pride, God is faithful and just to forgive me. But He doesn’t stop there, He completes this word by cleansing me from all unrighteousness.

Thank God for the blood of Jesus!

I remember, not too long ago, someone wrote to me about their marriage. They wanted prayer. God spoke to me that day and said pride was ruining their marriage. Pride in both of them.

Over the years I have seen lives ruined by pride. Marriages ruined. Businesses destroyed. Lives crushed…all because of pride. We all have it. If you think you are free of all pride, you are fooling yourself.

God resists the proud. He opposes them. Fights against them.   He frustrates and disappoints those who choose to continually walk in pride. Knowing that, is pride worth it? I say, no, a thousand times, no.

I have decided to wage war on pride in my own life. It’s not easy. It’s not fun. It pops up daily. But daily, I repent and put it under the blood. Knowing a little more unrighteousness has been removed from me. As the Scripture says, I will not be satisfied until I awake in HIS likeness. Until then, I continue to pray and apply His Word to my life.

How about you? If you want rid of all pride, pray with me.

God, today I acknowledge I have pride in my heart, in my life. I repent of all pride. Today, I wage war on pride, and I ask You to expose it. I ask You to show me all areas of pride in my life. I do not want You to oppose me or resist me. I want to walk as one with You, fully pleasing You. I thank You for cleansing me today of all unrighteousness, in Jesus name.

Pride is certainly at the root of many of our sins. Nothing has affected me more than this excerpt from Mere Christianity on Pride: http://www.fellowshipofthemartyrs.com/articles/60-spiritual-tuneup/191-mere-christianity-chapter-8-qthe-great-sinq-cs-lewis-

Thank you for sharing.
As we transition from passover to pentecost, I’m reminded how much we need Holy Spirit to come along side us to lead us into all truth.

I find the feasts help us to do course corrections. When we get off track He lovingly gets us back on course.
He isn’t a God who who rules by fear. He loves us into relationship with him. Every day He reveals Himself to me. Exciting adventure!!!

In the words of Robert Burns:
“O that GOD the grace would give us to see ourselves as others see us.”
LORD, We can be so blind to our failings.
Search our hearts, LORD, and grant us the grace to face the truth about our sinfulness that we may repent and be healed. In Jesus Name, Amen.

When I was young, I decided to study everything the Bible said about humility. I wanted to be humble!! My heart yearned for that. I looked up in my concordance every reference and verse that had to do with humility. What I learned was that we can never know if we have attained humility because, by the very definition of humility, that acknowledgement would be coming from a place of pride and therefore negate the humility it seeks to affirm. I (now) rest easily in not knowing. I seek confession and repentance as God brings areas of pride to light. Am I humble? Who knows? It’s something I don’t need to know.

“..The vice I am talking of is Pride or Self-Conceit: and the virtue opposite to it, in Christian morals, is called Humility. You may remember, when I was talking about sexual morality, I warned you that the center of Christian morals did not lie there. Well, now, we have come to the centre. According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind…..
He is trying to make you humble in order to make this moment possible: trying to take off a lot of silly, ugly, fancy-dress in which we have all got ourselves up and are strutting about like the little idiots we are. I wish I had got a bit further with humility myself: if I had, I could probably tell you more about the relief, the comfort, of taking the fancy-dress off—getting rid of the false self, with all its ‘Look at me’ and ‘Aren’t I a good boy?’ and all its posing and posturing. To get even near it, even for a moment, is like a drink of cold water to a man in a desert.

    (4) Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call ‘humble’ nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably, all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.

If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realise that one is proud. And a biggish step, too. At least, nothing whatever can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.” Excerpts, Chapter 8, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis
