Could Abdul El-Sayed ‘Permanently Change America’?
Michigan’s Senate race is drawing increasing national attention as former Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon warns that Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s political views and associations represent a fundamental challenge to America’s founding principles. Dixon pointed specifically to El-Sayed’s past comments about efforts to ban Sharia law, his appearances with far-left streamer Hasan Piker, and his progressive economic agenda.

From Fox News:
“This is someone who fundamentally disagrees with the Constitution and the founding of this country and has come out and said the founding of this was wrong and he disagrees with this. This is somebody who wants to go into government to permanently change America.”
…
During a 2022 speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Oklahoma chapter, El-Sayed said efforts to ban Sharia law were rooted in white supremacy and driven by “the same exact forces” behind the forced removal of Native Americans and the destruction of Black Wall Street.
…
El-Sayed pushed back on criticism of his association with Piker during an April “Fox & Friends” appearance, saying, “[Just] because you appear with somebody, doesn’t mean you agree with them on everything.”
The controversy surrounding El-Sayed comes as Michigan prepares for what could be one of the nation’s most consequential Senate contests. El-Sayed is running against Republican nominee Mike Rogers for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. With control of the Senate potentially hanging in the balance, both parties are expected to devote significant attention and resources to Michigan.
El-Sayed’s victory in the Democratic primary also highlighted tensions within the party between its progressive wing and more traditional Democrats. His positions and political associations have become a particular focus as Republicans seek to define him for general-election voters. El-Sayed has rejected the socialist label, saying that he believes in capitalism but wants it more heavily regulated.
His past remarks concerning Sharia law have also attracted scrutiny. Sharia refers broadly to Islamic religious law and moral principles, and its interpretation and application vary considerably among Muslim communities and governments. Debates over state efforts to prohibit courts from applying foreign or religious law have raised questions about religious liberty, constitutional protections, and whether American law could ever be displaced by competing legal systems. Under the Constitution, however, federal and state law remain controlling in American courts.
Dixon is also focusing attention on El-Sayed’s appearances with Hasan Piker, a prominent left-wing streamer who has repeatedly generated controversy over remarks about the United States, the September 11 terrorist attacks, Hamas, and other political issues. El-Sayed has argued that appearing alongside someone does not mean endorsing all of that person’s views.
For intercessors, Michigan’s Senate race is about more than partisan control of Congress. The competing claims and controversies surrounding the candidates underscore the importance of praying for discernment among voters, truth in political debate, and leaders who will uphold the Constitution and govern with wisdom and integrity. As November approaches, let’s pray that voters carefully examine the records, statements, and principles of those seeking positions of great authority.
