President Donald Trump announced Leavitt’s unexpected forthcoming departure on Wednesday in a post on Truth Social, calling her “one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office” and saying she would continue as one of his top outside advisors.

Leavitt said serving as press secretary “has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime,” adding: “Being a mother and welcoming a new baby while working in one of the most demanding jobs in the world has been the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life, to say the least.”

She explained her decision: “The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary — and that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life.”

Leavitt took the podium on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025, becoming the youngest White House press secretary in history at 27 years old. She had also served as national press secretary for Trump’s 2024 campaign. During her tenure she became a recognizable face of the administration, conducting daily briefings, traveling abroad with the president, and defending administration policies against a frequently adversarial press corps. She welcomed her daughter Viviana on May 1 while in the role and returned to the briefing room on July 16, less than three months later. No replacement has been named.

Leavitt’s departure is a reminder of something that rarely surfaces in political coverage: the enormous personal toll of serving at the highest levels of government. For a mother of two young children, the demands of one of the most scrutinized jobs in Washington ultimately proved incompatible with the time and presence her family needed. Trump acknowledged as much in his announcement, saying he “totally” understood and respected her decision. Leavitt has indicated she will remain active in Republican politics and continue advising the president from outside the White House, suggesting her influence on the administration is far from finished.
