Rep. Harriet Hageman is warning that America’s patriotism is in decline after new polling revealed historically low levels of national pride, particularly among Democrats. Speaking ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Wyoming congresswoman argued that recovering an appreciation for America’s founding principles is essential to reversing the trend.

From Fox News:

Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., is sounding the alarm over polling revealing that a record-low number of Americans were “very proud” of their country last year.

“In Gallup’s 25-year patriotism survey, just 17 percent, or less than 1 in 5 American adults, reported that they were ‘very proud’ of being an American,” Hageman said in a floor speech on Tuesday.

“Our excitement for America has been dimmed by accusations of an unacceptable morality, our self-image tarnished by a novel self-flagellation,” she added.

Gallup has tracked Americans’ national pride for more than two decades, and its latest survey found a sharp partisan divide. While 92% of Republicans reported being “very proud” to be American, that number fell to just 36% among Democrats, down from 62% the previous year. Independents also saw a significant decline, with only 53% expressing a high degree of national pride.

In her speech, Hageman argued that these numbers are not the result of chance but reflect years of efforts to reinterpret America’s history through the lens of its failures rather than its founding ideals. She criticized the growing influence of the 1619 Project and similar historical narratives, contending that they have encouraged many Americans to view the nation as fundamentally flawed instead of recognizing both its imperfections and its remarkable achievements. Hageman expressed hope that America’s ongoing 250th anniversary celebration will renew appreciation for the nation’s founding and inspire a new generation to embrace its heritage.

America’s history includes both extraordinary triumphs and undeniable failures, but a nation that forgets or rejects its founding principles risks losing the very freedoms that made it exceptional. As our nation marks 250 years of independence, this is an opportunity not only to celebrate our heritage but also to remember that our rights come from God—not government—and that preserving America’s future begins with teaching each generation the truth about our past. Let us pray that God would restore gratitude for our nation’s blessings, strengthen biblical values in our culture, and raise up leaders who will faithfully preserve the principles upon which America was founded.
