As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday next year, one freshman congressman is calling on lawmakers to reaffirm the nation’s founding principles. Rep. Matt Van Epps says the effort is intended to remind future generations of the enduring truths expressed in the Declaration of Independence at a time when many Americans are questioning the country’s founding ideals.

From Fox News:

Rep. Matt Van Epps, R-Tenn., unveiled legislation reaffirming the Declaration of Independence — a move he said follows a congressional tradition of marking major national anniversaries with the founding document.

“Congress did this in America 100 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary,” Van Epps told Fox News Digital in an interview. “We felt like this was the right time to do it so that generations forward understand that we love our country at America 250.”

The Tennessee Republican, who was elected in a December 2025 special election, said he filed the bill in response to socialism’s rise in the Democratic Party, with the far-left attempting a major power grab ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Van Epps argued that the Declaration of Independence remains the foundation of America’s system of government and its understanding of God-given rights. He specifically pointed to the growing influence of self-described democratic socialists within the Democratic Party, warning that many of their policies and philosophies stand in direct opposition to the principles of liberty, limited government, and individual rights articulated by the Founders. He described socialist and Marxist ideas as repeatedly failing wherever they have been implemented and said Congress should reaffirm the nation’s commitment to its original ideals.

The resolution follows similar action in the Senate, where Sen. Eric Schmitt successfully introduced a companion measure earlier this month. Schmitt has expressed concern over declining patriotism, citing polling that shows far fewer Americans today say they are proud of their country than in previous generations. He has argued that the Declaration is not merely a historical document but an inheritance that each generation has a responsibility to preserve and pass on.

The House has not yet scheduled a vote on Van Epps’ resolution after lawmakers departed Washington early for the Independence Day recess amid disputes over other legislative priorities. If adopted, the resolution would continue a longstanding congressional tradition of recognizing major national anniversaries by formally reaffirming the principles that gave birth to the United States.

As our nation approaches its semiquincentennial, debates over America’s identity and future have become increasingly prominent. The Declaration’s recognition that our rights come from our Creator—not from government—remains especially significant. While America has never been perfect, the biblical understanding that human dignity and liberty are rooted in God has shaped our nation from its founding. This anniversary offers us an opportunity to pray not only for renewed patriotism, but for a genuine return to the truths upon which true freedom depends.

This Truth still holds true today:

“Our strength lies in spiritual concepts. It lies in public sensitiveness to evil. Our greatest danger is not from invasion by foreign armies. Our dangers are that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance with evil, or by public tolerance of scandalous behavior.”

Herbert Hoover, President of the United States of America (1929-1933)

Lord God, we need you more than ever to provide reminders to young and old alike of the founding principles of this great nation. It was under your guidance and direction for our founding fathers who mainly lost everything to bring this country into existence.

Let us all be deeply moved to their selfless sacrifices to uphold the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution boldly, courageously and honorably for their sake, our children’s future and what right in the eyes of God.

This, I pray in the name of our Savior and soon coming King, YESHUA, amen.

I am very grateful that we have elected officials in our nation who have the conviction to stand up for what needs to happen in our nation. The most important thing that needs to happen in our nation, is to make sure that any type of return to patriotism ad decency in our nation is based in the unchanging Truth of God’s holy word. By the power and presence of Holy Spirit Lord, please give all Americans a profound hunger for more of You in their lives. Thank You Jesus.

Well said Brian!!! We need more of GOD in this country than anything! It breaks my heart to see how people have turned against this country and what our country was founded upon…the Word of GOD! I pray we turn to HIM and back to HIM before HE brings judgment upon this country. I am totally amazed at the hated of people here who hate what America represents and stands for. Socialism and communism are NOT what people are being brainwashed to believe. They choose to believe the lies of people who have been blinded by the enemy of our souls. I pray the people of America wake up before it’s too late.
FATHER, I pray YOU turn America back to YOU before it’s too late to turn back to YOU in the Mighty and Powerful Name of JESUS!

The timing is right for Rep. Matt Van Epps, R-TENN to introduce this legislation. A prayer: “Father, please give Mr. Van Epps the fortitude to request that the House get a vote scheduled right after the 4th of July recess so this legislation can be passed. Father, would You please bring our legislators back from their recess with a renewed sense of the genius of our Founding Fathers who pledged their lives, fortunes & sacred honor when they signed the Declaration of Independence. I pray this in Jesus powerful name, the name above all names. Amen!”
