Eight members of a North Texas Antifa cell have received lengthy federal prison sentences following their convictions for carrying out a deadly attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility. The case marks what prosecutors have described as the first successful federal terrorism prosecution involving Antifa members.

From Ngo Comment:

The defendants were among nine Antifa members convicted by a federal jury in March following the first federal Antifa terrorism trial in U.S. history. Their prison sentences are the longest in American history for convicted violent Antifa members.

The cell plotted and carried out an attack on the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, on July 4, 2025.

Jurors found the defendants guilty of offenses including providing material support to terrorists, rioting, conspiracy involving explosives and related crimes.

The attack occurred after members of the group allegedly spent months planning the operation, training with firearms, and coordinating through encrypted messaging applications. According to testimony presented during the trial, the group arrived at the detention center dressed in black bloc attire and carrying firearms, body armor, medical supplies, and explosive devices. Prosecutors said they used explosive fireworks to lure officers from the facility before opening fire.

During the attack, Alvarado Police Lt. Thomas Gross was shot in the neck but survived. Federal prosecutors argued that ringleader Benjamin Hanil Song fired the shot that wounded the officer. Song received the harshest sentence—100 years in federal prison—after being convicted of attempted murder and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. The remaining defendants sentenced Tuesday received prison terms ranging from 30 to 70 years.

IFA intercessors have been praying about this trial for months now. These convictions do not simply represent justice, they also represent a tangible answer to our fervent prayers.

Evidence introduced at trial included firearms, ammunition, electronic devices stored in Faraday bags, and anarchist propaganda recovered during the investigation. Cooperating co-defendants testified that members identified with Antifa ideology, trained together, and carefully planned the attack. Defense attorneys argued the incident was intended as a protest rather than a terrorist attack, but jurors rejected those claims after deliberating for two days.

The federal convictions do not conclude the legal proceedings. Additional defendants who pleaded guilty are scheduled to be sentenced next week, while several members of the alleged network continue to face separate state charges in Texas, including domestic terrorism, conspiracy, and attempted murder. State investigators have also expanded the investigation into individuals accused of helping Song evade capture following the shooting.

This case is a sobering reminder of the dangers of political violence and extremism. Scripture calls us to pursue justice, uphold the rule of law, and reject violence as a means of advancing political causes. As ideological divisions continue to deepen across America, we can pray for peace, the protection of law enforcement officers, and hearts transformed by the truth of the Gospel.
