As an ob-gyn and medical director of four pregnancy centers in North Carolina, I regularly see firsthand that nothing could be further from the truth.

Increasingly, women are turning to our centers to get the guidance and medical evaluation they want and know they need when taking abortion drugs. They show up throughout the week with critical questions: Are the drugs they received in the mail real? Can we give them an ultrasound to rule out ectopic pregnancy or verify the gestational age of their pregnancy? Are the side effects they’re experiencing normal?

Women realize the need for ongoing medical care throughout the abortion process, despite the government and abortion advocates’ attempts to convince them they don’t need it. And a growing body of scientific data reflects their concerns about appropriate mifepristone safeguards.

The physician argues that the Food and Drug Administration’s removal of previous safeguards has allowed abortion drugs to be distributed through the mail without the same level of medical oversight that once existed. Critics of the current policy contend that women are often encouraged to view chemical abortion as a simple and routine process despite the possibility of complications that may require emergency medical care.

The debate surrounding mifepristone has intensified in recent years as pro-life advocates, physicians, and lawmakers have challenged the FDA’s decisions regarding the drug. Several studies and reports have been cited by critics who argue that adverse events are more common than previously acknowledged. Supporters of abortion access, meanwhile, maintain that mifepristone is safe and effective and point to years of clinical use and research supporting its approval.

For many pregnancy resource centers across the country, however, the issue has become increasingly personal. Women continue seeking ultrasounds, medical consultations, and follow-up care after receiving abortion drugs, often expressing uncertainty about the process and concern about potential complications. Pro-life physicians argue that this growing demand demonstrates that many women desire more medical oversight, not less.

The author also challenges what she describes as a broader unwillingness within parts of the medical community to reexamine assumptions surrounding abortion drugs. Throughout medical history, accepted theories and practices have been revised as new evidence emerged. She argues that mifepristone should be subjected to the same level of scrutiny and ongoing evaluation as any other drug affecting patient health and safety.

This debate ultimately centers on both truth and compassion. Every abortion involves not only an unborn child created in God’s image, but also a woman who deserves honest information, quality medical care, and genuine support.
