From Breitbart:
Adam Hamawy, who won the Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman in Congress, has drawn criticism over volunteer work he performed in the 1990s with a charity later accused of serving as a front for terrorist activities. The controversy has intensified due to Hamawy’s outspoken criticism of Israel and support from members of the progressive “Squad.”
Hamawy, who was endorsed by the so-called “Squad,” became a lightning rod for criticism on the campaign trail due to his intense criticism of Israel and his having volunteered with the Benevolence International Foundation in Bosnia, per the New York Post …
The Benevolence International Foundation was founded as a humanitarian charity but later became the focus of federal counterterrorism investigations. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, the organization’s operations in Bosnia were part of a network that covertly provided financial and logistical support for terrorist activities connected to Osama bin Laden during the 1990s. Federal authorities later alleged that al-Qaeda used the organization as a front to establish operational networks in Europe, leading to raids, legal action, and the eventual dissolution of the group.
While Hamawy has maintained that his involvement was limited to volunteer work decades ago, critics argue that the connection warrants further examination, especially as he seeks federal office. The issue has gained additional attention because of Hamawy’s strong criticism of Israel and his endorsement by members of the progressive “Squad,” many of whom have been outspoken opponents of Israeli military actions in Gaza.
Additional scrutiny has focused on individuals connected to the organization during the same period. According to Jewish Insider, records show that Saffet Catovic, a New Jersey native who served in Bosnia’s diplomatic mission in New York, later became a spokesman for Benevolence International during federal investigations into the group.
