A major religious liberty battle in Washington state has ended in victory for a Christian foster family after state officials backed down from policies that would have forced them to affirm transgender ideology in order to continue serving vulnerable children.

From The Western Journal:

After losing in its attempt to force a Christian family to worship at the transgender altar, Washington’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families has surrendered.

The state agreed to a permanent injunction that means families are not required to enforce the state’s embrace of gender ideology when they take in foster care children, according to Just the News.

“DCYF is prohibited from denying foster family home license applicants, or licensed foster parents seeking renewal of their license, a full license consistent with the requests of the applicant/licensee or attaching any conditions or restrictions to the license solely because of their religious beliefs, including speech and actions pertaining to marriage, gender, or sexual relationships,” the injunction from District Court Judge David Estudillo said.

Shane and Jennifer DeGross had been fighting the state for years after officials informed them that they would need to affirm gender transition language and preferred pronouns in order to renew their foster care license. The family argued that such a requirement violated their Christian convictions and their First Amendment rights.

The court ultimately agreed, signaling that the state likely violated constitutional protections by attempting to compel speech and religious compliance. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing the family said the case was never about hostility toward children, but rather about whether faithful Christian families could continue serving foster children without abandoning their biblical beliefs.

The ruling is being celebrated by religious liberty advocates nationwide as another significant legal pushback against government efforts to enforce gender ideology through public policy. Critics of Washington’s approach argued the state was shrinking the pool of loving foster homes at a time when many children are already in desperate need of stable families.

ADF also noted that the DeGross family had faithfully cared for foster children for nearly a decade before the state attempted to impose ideological conditions on their license. Under the settlement, Washington will also pay $250,000 in legal fees.

Let’s thank God for this ruling, and let’s ask him to continue to protect our religious freedom across the nation!
