Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s ban on so-called “assault weapons” has only been law for a few hours and it’s already facing a slew of legal challenges.

The Virginia Democrat signed the legislation, SB 749, into law Thursday despite the General Assembly rejecting her amendments to the bill, claiming that the gun ban would “protect families.” The National Rifle Association announced its federal and state litigation with a post on X and a press release, with the Second Amendment Foundation and Firearms Policy Coalition following suit Thursday.

The Trump administration also plans to sue over the ban, with Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon announcing the legal move late Thursday.

The legislation bans the future purchase of many semiautomatic firearms categorized as “assault weapons” and restricts magazine capacities to 15 rounds. Gun rights groups argue the law targets firearms commonly used for lawful purposes such as self-defense, sport shooting, and hunting.

Several organizations immediately condemned the law, calling it unconstitutional and promising to fast-track the issue through the courts. The Firearms Policy Coalition emphasized that the banned firearms are not machine guns and fire only one round per trigger pull, while the Second Amendment Foundation accused lawmakers of misleading Virginians about the nature of the firearms covered under the ban.

The Department of Justice has also recently challenged similar gun restrictions in other states, including Colorado and Denver, signaling a broader legal battle over state-level firearm regulations. Supporters of the lawsuits argue that recent Supreme Court rulings have strengthened constitutional protections for gun ownership and will ultimately lead to these bans being overturned.
