I Prayed have prayed
Father, We thank You for bringing revival to America. As this revival spreads, God, we pray that You would help us to shepherd it well through prayer, service, and love.
Reading Time: 5 minutes

The Asbury revival is still underway, but it needs your prayers!

From Give Him 15. I am receiving numerous reports and updates regarding what is occurring at Asbury University (and elsewhere). Carol Stratton shared the following report, which is especially helpful, as it gives behind-the-scenes information regarding how to pray and support what is taking place. The logistical details that have to be thought through and implemented, as well as the tremendous weight of spiritual responsibility on the leaders, is no doubt daunting.

Do you want state prayer alerts?

Carol and her husband, Dr. Stephen Stratton, are local residents, alumni of the university, and active in the community. Dr. Stratton teaches in the seminary. Her insights are astute. She states:

“‘Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I WOULD RATHER BE A DOORKEEPER in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” (Psalm 84:10)

“Last night, I got an entirely different perspective on the Asbury Revival, which is still robustly happening, by the way!

“First, let me provide some context. Wilmore, Kentucky, is our home. Steve and I are alumni of the university, and Steve has enjoyed a career at both the university and the seminary. The leadership team of this Revival are our friends and neighbors. This is happening in our backyard!

“So, yesterday, I arrived on campus at supper time, hoping the crowd had adequately thinned to provide me with a seat in Hughes Auditorium. I didn’t HAVE to be there, but I LONGED to be there. The line that stretched toward entry to Hughes was as long as the line to a thrill ride at Disney!

“By this time, I knew there was no way for me to be a participant as an attendee, like Mary, basking in the presence of Jesus. But I could ‘Martha’ if needed. I walked around to the back and was stopped by a worker, but quickly informed them that I was a community person and just wondered if the lead team needed anything. I would be happy to run an errand. Get something? Help in some way?

“A long-time buddy quickly handed me a ‘prayer team’ tag, and instructed me to monitor the side door near the Library, because people were slipping through there. For safety’s sake, the leaders needed to be able to get a head count of folks in the auditorium. So, from 5 to 9:30, I ‘guarded’ the side door, in an alcove behind the auditorium. It was fascinating. I was able to engage attendees with grace and humor, while explaining the needful boundary.

“I was able to thank prayer teams and worship leaders as they entered and exited. I was able to experience the ‘runoff’ of the River of Life, as it swelled its banks and overflowed into my little nook. I was also able to visit with a couple of leaders who gave me an insightful glimpse into all they are addressing as this miracle keeps unfolding! Here are some observations from my Doorkeeping Duties last night:

  1. “Every worship team is prayed with and prayed over before they step on the platform.

  2. “As they exit the platform, every worship team of musicians is met by a leader who helps them process what they just experienced and prays over them. This intentional intervention guides these young musicians back to the focus: Always Jesus. Always God’s glory. Don’t confuse His goodness [with a feeling of greatness on your part]. You had the privilege of participating in a ‘God Thing’!

  3. “Like a River, this God Event is fluid. The leadership is constantly challenged to respond to the ever-increasing swell of people and their needs. Parking, seats, food, water, restrooms…are just the basics. (One mother drove non-stop from North Dakota with her daughter, and begged that her daughter might take a shower, so they didn’t have to leave!) AND the Community is responding again and again! One attendee (knowing I hadn’t eaten all night) handed me a chili dog and informed me that ‘a venue down the street’ was giving away FREE chili dogs, chips, and water!

  4. “More structures and guidelines are being constructed.…college-age folks can attend actual ’Chapel.’ The remaining ‘Program’ starts at 2 PM, though worship continues [after chapel]. Overflow venues are being made available, including Estes Chapel, McKenna Chapel, GCF, and Wilmore UMC. They are all bursting with hungry worshippers. Some buildings are being closed during the early morning hours for the safety of attendees and equipment.

  5. “Prayer is happening constantly: in pockets backstage, in hallways, in places hidden from view but not hidden from God.

  6. “The Front Line of leaders is running on grace. They are understandably weary, yet undaunted in their mission. One leader had worked a 40-hour week as of yesterday (Tuesday night). They need reinforcements and refreshments. God is sustaining them, and they continue to serve with unbridled joy and faith-filled fatigue.

  7. “The needs remain varied and enormous! One student gave a testimony from the stage, and immediately, people physically responded to his expressed need. It was like watching the Church in Acts leap into action! The eruption of applause as they responded to his need was deafening!

  8. “Our prayers are making a difference. Just before I ended my ‘shift’ a couple approached my door. I asked if I could help them. They looked at my tag and said, ‘We just wanted someone to pray with us before we drove home to Memphis. We are dealing with a lot.’

“I smiled, opened the door, ushered them into the warmth, and said, ‘Right. Come talk with me, and we will pray.’ And we did. I walked them to their car, and they left satisfied by the One who is ’feeding the 5,000’ again!

“YOUR prayers are needed. The needs are enormous. The mechanics of practical need-meeting are daunting. The Leadership Team is tired. God continues to pour out His Spirit in box-bursting ways! Please cover all of this in prayer!! It is THRILLING!! God is pouring out His power, grace, mercy, and goodness! And He is pouring out opportunities for each of us to be the hands and feet of Jesus where we are!

“I heard someone quote: ‘There are FIVE Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and You. Most people will never read the first four.’

“Keep praying. Keep watch. Hold the door OPEN that all may enter!”

Thank you, Carol, for allowing us to share this insightful, first-hand report. Finally, we must also pray for this entire community. As glorious as this is, Wilmore will likely be hit with a tidal wave of people. Unlike past revivals there and elsewhere, social media has already caused this one to go viral. Millions have heard about it. And people are hungry. Alumni, pastors, and seekers are showing up from everywhere. If my sources are correct, busloads of students have arrived from:

Pray with me:

Our prayer today is simply the words of the great hymn, Revive Us Again.

“We praise thee, O God, for the Son of thy love,
for Jesus who died, and is now gone above.

Refrain:
Hallelujah! Thine the glory, hallelujah! Amen!
Hallelujah! Thine the glory, revive us again.

We praise thee, O God, for thy Spirit of light,
who has shown us our Savior and scattered our night. [Refrain]

We praise thee, O God, for the joy Thou hast giv’n,
to thy saints in communion, these foretastes of heav’n. [Refrain]

Revive us again, fill each heart with Thy love.
May each soul be rekindled with fire from above. [Refrain]” (1)

Father God, We thank you and praise you for answering our prayers for revival! We pray and decree that the revival happening in Kentucky would spread like wildfire across the nation of America and the nations of the world. We lift up the worship teams, prayer teams, teachers and pray your blessings, favor and protection over them. Send your angel armies to minister to and protect all in attendance or are called to be in attendance. I pray for prodigal sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters to be saved in Jesus name Amen

Charles Finney’s Lectures on Revival Chapters 4/5/6/7. condensed
Ch 4 Prevailing Prayer – Obtains the blessing it seeks
Pray for:
1) A Definite object
2) In Accordance with the revealed will of God
2a) Express Promises/Predictions in the Bible – in particular things or in general terms so we may apply them to particular things
EXAMPLE:
General
(Mat 7:11)  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Specific
(Luk 11:13)  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
NOTE THAT THE WORDING OF THE TWO VERSES IS IDENTICAL UP TO “CHILDREN”:
2b) Gods Providence (The act of providing or preparing for future use or application) – known by spiritual discernment
2c) By the Holy Spirit:
(Rom 8:27)  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
(Eph 5:18)  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
3) in submission to the will of God (not to be confused with indifference)
“In the case of an impenitent friend, the very condition on which he is to be saved from Hell, may be the fervency and importunaty of your prayer for that individual.”
4) Desire commensurate with its importance – if desire is strong, benevolent, and not contrary to the revealed will and providence of God, the presumption is that it will be granted.
Why:
A) The general benevolence of God is presumptive evidence it will be granted.
B) If you’re exercised with benevolent desire, that in itself is presumptive evident God wants to grant it in answer to prayer.
5) Right Motives – NOT selfish, but dictated by a supreme regard for the Glory of God.
6) By intercession of the Holy Spirit
7) It must be persevering prayer – Will not allow you to think about anything else, Intense desire to the exclusion of all else.
8) To pray effectually you must pray a great deal.
9) Pray in the Name of Christ (by His Merits)
10) Renounce ALL your sins.
11) In Faith!!! Expect to obtain it!
DO NOT QUENCH THE SPIRIT!!! & DO NOT BE DIVERTED TO OTHER OBJECTS!!!
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Ch 5 – The Prayer of Faith
Conditions:
1) We must forgive all
2) Faith in God – We will receive what we ask for.
WHEN:
We are bound to pray the prayer of faith when we have Evidence:
1) a particular promise in the Bible
2) a general promise that may be applied to a particular case
EXAMPLES:
When we need God to intervene:
(Isa 59:19)  So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
Timing:
(Isa 65:24)  And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
For Children:
(Psa 103:17)  But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
(Psa 103:18)  To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
General:
(Mar 11:24)  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
3) Prophecy (Ex. Daniel from Jeremiah’s 70 years)
4) Signs of the times or providence of God.
5) By the Spirit of God’s leading and exitation of strong desires
HOW:
1) Obtain evidence from a promise in the Bible
2) Cherish Good desires you have:
2a DO NOT GRIEVE THE SPIRIT
2b DO NOT BE DIVERTED
3) Entire consecration
4) Perseverance – don’t give up until you obtain what you ask!
5) Walk with God daily.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Ch 6 – The Spirit of Prayer
The Holy Spirit was sent into the world by the Savior to guide His people and instruct them and bring things to their remembrance, as well as convince the world of sin.
*** If your feelings are truly benevolent, you are to consider it as the Holy Spirit leading you to pray for things according to the will of God.***
The Holy Spirit intercedes and helps our ignorance, He makes Christians feel the value of souls and the guilt & danger of their condition.
He (Holy Spirit) leads Christians to understand and apply the promises of Scripture.
REMEMBER TO TEST THE SPIRITS:
(1Jn 4:2)  Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
(Jer 29:11)  For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
(Jer 29:12)  Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
(Jer 29:13)  And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
GENERAL TRUTHS:
1) God is willing to save
2) God answers prayer
Ask God to help you to think about the object/person/situation.
Pray for the Spirit that we may be more useful and Glorify God more.
Watch unto prayer – keep a list of specific things you’ve prayed for so you know when they have been given and the prayer has been answered.
Aim to perfectly obey the written law “Be Perfect”
The Spirit gives evidence by creating desire & by leading us to pray.
HOW:
Seek God’s Spirit by fervent believing prayer:
(Luk 11:13)  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
(Jas 4:3)  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
Think about the object and their state/relation to God! Read what the Bible says of the lost.
Persevere until you obtain the blessing of the Spririt of God to dwell in you.
DO NOT GRIEVE THE SPIRIT & PERSEVERE UNTIL YOU OBTAIN THE OBJECT!
—————————————————————————————————————————–
Ch 7 – On being filled with the Holy Spirit
Sources of Evidence:
1) Promises
2) Principles
3) Prophecy
4) Providence
It is our duty to be filled with the Holy Spirit!
Promise – (Luk 11:13)  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Command – (Eph 5:18)  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Why many are not filled with the Spirit
1) Hypocritical Life
2) Too much Levity – Light or joking
3) Pride
4) Worldly-Mindedness
5) Not fully confessing and forsaking sin
6) Neglecting a known duty
7) Resisting the Spirit of God
8) Do not truly desire the Spirit (enough to fulfil the conditions/requirements)
9) Not praying for the Spirit
Signs you do have the Spirit and what to expect
1) thought to be eccentric/deranged or too emotional
2) you will face opposition, conflict with Satan, yourself, but you will have peace with God, a good conscience, you will be useful, not bothered by slander, wise in dealing with sinners, calm under affliction, ready to die.
To have the Spirit you must be child-like – yield to the least desire from the Spirit and ready to sacrifice anything to enjoy HIS Presence.

I am in tears…with gratitude towards our mighty God who LOVES and SUSTAINS us! The church has been under attack and I am grateful that the Lord is making us very aware that He is there with us and hasn’t forgotten us. This is HIS movement and my prayer is that we will always remember who is in charge and lift ourselves up as vessels for God to use us in whatever venue He would. Continued prayer for wisdom, energy, and grace for all those involved.

Oh, the joy at this fulfillment of our prayers at every meal, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Lord Jesus, burst out from these 24 colleges to the rest of them! Come to Wheaton College, Westmont College, Biola University, USC, UCLA and all the other University of California Colleges including Irvine and San Diego. Come to our churches! Come to Cornerstone Church of Long Beach!

Holy Spirit, break through–we give You permission to interrupt our lives, our plans–break through and explode the walls we are constantly erecting to “protect” our hard, proud and judgmental hearts, the prisons we have built around ourselves to keep You out. YOUR fire, Lord, YOUR streams and rivers and floods and tsunamis and avalanches of unconditional love and blessing. Have Your way with us! As Dave Kubal says, “We’re jumping in!” We want to be part of it. We want to be filled to overflowing into the lives of all those around us. The people who live in darkness will see, ARE SEEING, a GREAT LIGHT. HALLELUJAH!
.
THANK YOU, Father, for answering Your Son’s prayers “that [believers] may have MY JOY fulfilled in themselves. . . that they may behold MY GLORY which You have given Me. . . that THE LOVE WITH WHICH YOU HAVE LOVED ME may be in them, and I in them!” (Gospel of John chapter 17) YOUR JOY! YOUR GLORY! YOUR LOVE!

And THANK YOU for that joy bubbling out as giggles when we hear Rich Swingle was “carded” at Asbury because he was too old to enter the room set aside for those 25 and under!

Father, bless those who lead. Strengthen them. Bring in leaders who can spell them. Provide for the crowds that are gathering. May your Lordship be shone over the needs as well as over the inner workings in people. We praise you because you know the needs and are providing. Bless everyone who helps cover the needs of food and rest.

Tears of gratitude to our God- the Living God- who has heard our prayers of petition for revival in this dear land, America, which is our home away from home. Our ultimate home is heaven! “We are strangers and pilgrims on the earth.”
“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” Hebrews 11:13
