The Customs and Border Protection shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis could cause Washington to shut the government down for the second time in three months.

Senate Democrats signaled over the weekend that they would not vote for a bill that would fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year, which contains funding for the Department of Homeland Security. CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement — whose agents were involved in the shooting of Renee Good — both fall under the DHS umbrella.

“After their son was killed in broad daylight, they are now forced to defend him against this administration’s lies,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on X. “It’s another reason why Senate Democrats are united in rejecting this DHS spending bill.”

The Daily Wire announced that the House has already adjourned. Representatives will likely not return in time to avert another partial shutdown should legislators in the upper chamber reach a deal.

Democrats have been opposed to President Trump’s immigration agenda for months now, although the recent deaths of two protestors have renewed opposition and attacks against ICE and CBP. It’s unclear exactly how a shutdown would impact these departments, however, considering that much of the Trump administration’s immigration agenda was passed through last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill.

This also comes after Democrats in the Senate triggered the longest government shutdown in American history last year. The partial shutdown, triggered by an argument over Obamacare subsidies, saw the government shut down for 43 days.

Friday is the spending bill deadline. Let’s pray that our lawmakers are able to come to an agreement that keeps the government open and keeps federal law enforcement funded.
