As the government shutdown inches closer to the one-month mark, one Democratic Senator is coming under fire for continuing to accept her government salary—even as her office stepped in to correct her.

[Senator Tina] Smith told the Daily Caller News Foundation on Thursday that she would not forgo her paycheck because she continues to work in the Capitol during a lapse in government funding. She helped block legislation to pay some federal employees — including congressional staff and Capitol Police who are working unpaid — minutes later.
“I’m going to continue to take my paycheck,” Smith replied when asked about some of her Democratic colleagues choosing to defer their pay until the shutdown ends or donate it. “I continue to work and I think the solution here is to end the shutdown by getting the negotiations going so we can solve the problem.”
The DCNF asked Smith’s office for additional comment and a spokesperson replied that Smith may have been “confused by the question.” The spokesperson added that Smith’s office asked to defer her paycheck for the duration of the shutdown nearly two weeks ago.
As the Daily Caller notes, Senator Smith’s comments came shortly before a vote on legislation that would have paid essential government employees for the duration of the shutdown. As IFA reported yesterday, Democrat senators shut down the bill in a largely party-line vote.
As the shutdown continues, some Democratic lawmakers have elected to refuse their paychecks in a showing of solidarity with federal employees. Senators Richard Blumenthal, Mark Kelly, and Mark Warner all told the Caller they are not taking salaries, donating the money to charitable efforts instead. Meanwhile, Senators Ruben Gallego, Mazie Hirono, Dick Durbin, and Patty Murray all dodged the question, refusing to say whether they were currently taking salaries or not.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who the Caller notes is deferring his paycheck, criticized Democrats for filibustering the bill to pay essential employees, saying on the Senate floor, “Twelve times now, Democrats have blocked just paying our federal employees.”
With no end to the shutdown in sight, let’s pray for provision for federal employees, and let’s pray that our lawmakers are able to work out a God-honoring solution!

LORD GOD, we pray righteousness prevail in all of this situation. We bind all forces of darkness, cancel their evil agreements, and nullify every curse, hex, vexation, incantation and spell over our governments officials and the American people. We loose the power of Almighty God, Angelic Forces and Heavenly Hosts to destroy all demonic influences and plans of the wicked and to bring Godly order to this chaos. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, AMEN!
Lord I pray the shutdown would end without compromising the wrong things. Lord give wisdom to all those responsible for passing the budget. I pray all demonic influence would be bound and halted in the name of Jesus, and that eyes would be opened and sound reasoning returned to our government officials. I ask for provision for everything lost. I also pray the lies would be exposed for all to see.
My Ohio Republican Senator, John Husted, is also choosing to forgo his salary until the government reopens.
Charity begins at home, then reaches abroad. The President said “America First”. What? Seems as though every country in the world is benefiting from Trump being in office except America. The Republicans are blaming the Democrats for the shut-down of the government, but they have the majority. If they cared more about the people that voted them in office more than their egos and pride, they (Republicans) would show it, not pass the blame on someone else. I find it hard to believe they can sleep at night. They haven’t been working and are still being paid. Well, we got what we asked for and now we are paying the heavy price. People are forced to work with no pay while a ballroom is being built for parties. Where are the priorities? Lord help US!
The issue could be resolved with a few democrat votes. The Continuing Resolution does nothing more than allow the government to function in the same manner as it has since early this year. The Democrats voted for the continuing resolution in the past. The house has voted and passed the resolution so it is only the Senate that is preventing the bill from being passed. This is because the Senate requires a minimum of 60 votes to end debate (Cloture Rule) on the bill. Once the required 60 has been obtained, the Continuing Resolution can be voted on which then only requires a simple majority. So, in this case the Democrats are preventing the resolution to be voted on. Our legislators (over the years) have allowed the legislative process to become very complicated with little concern for the average American. In many cases, legislation doesn’t even make it to a vote.
The ballroom is being funded by private donations and has nothing to do with the Continuing Resolution. It will fulfill a desire that many Presidents and others have wanted for state functions. For example, when President Obama had a state dinner, they had to rent a tent to house the function. I admit that the optics are bad considering the number of essential employees that are without paychecks.
While it is true that the Republicans are in the majority, the vote requires 60 “Yes” votes to pass the bill. Therefore, it requires 7 votes from the Democrat’s side. Thus, it is NOT the Republicans fault!

Democrats are voting to keep government shut down, holding Americans hostage… trying to get their evil agenda approved: taxpayer funding for murdering babies in their mother’s wombs, taxpayer funding for healthcare for illegals, taxpayer funding for DEI, taxpayer funding for nonsense in other countries. We The People say NO MORE TAXPAYER FUNDING of this wickedness! THAT’S what they are holding out for.

Father God bring your righteous light to bare upon the treasury of our nation and the destination and purpose of ever dollar and cent being spent. Let nothing be hidden from sight. The criminally illegal do not belong in the country therefore to give them Americans’ money which is not the democrats, it is insane.
I pray for justice and the terror of the LORD to fall on the consciousness of the democrats to stop trying to destroy the United States.
One way for sure to stop these shutdowns is to punish the Congressmen and Senators that they do not receive their salaries. This is a no-brainer. Why are they able to make
others suffer because of their stubborn acts, yet still receive their salaries that are way
too much for what they do. Two-years term limits, no retirement.
I recently heard from a virtual nurse who now no longer has a waiver that would allow her and her colleagues the opportunity to do virtual Rn visits, so she now has to drive long distances all over the place to meet with patients in person. That’s a major life-change, especially while she’s also juggling homeschooling and childcare for 2 grandkids certain days a week!
I’m praying for humility between the Republicans and Democrats, and that servant leadership would arise to show care for others who are different than us so we can start finding some human things we have in common to start bridging the gap, so we can start having real safe conversations that only God can open up. May You Lord fill your people with love and compassion towards others who have different views than they do. Let them not compromise their values but seek to serve you and glorify Your name. May You give them the heart, the words and the love oh, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen
Lord God, we love You and praise You for all that You do for this nation. Thank You Lord that You provide for Your Christian seniors. Thank You for the foods You provide from the many churches while it is difficult to get the provisions to keep a roof over our heads. Father, please hear our prayers to You while those selfish democrats in Congress do not care about our Social Security payments we worked so hard for in our old age are slipping away while the heathen continue to defy Your David, President Trump. Please intervene in these selfish arguments and bring peace and cooperation into our Congress, in Jesus’s Name we pray. Thank you Father.

What is meant by Senators Blumenthal et al saying they are not taking a salary, but donating it to charity? Are they getting a salary or not? Wow…..is this vague or what……as a citizen of the US I do not wish to spend money on giving illegal aliens healthcare that Americans need. End the shutdown. This is principle……not who is right or wrong……and the principle is that illegal aliens should not be given our hard earned tax dollars. They came here illegally, if they were not criminals before they came. They are now. Bottom line. The parties should not be allowed to spend our tax dollars frivolously or on illegal issues, or non biblical issues, or to expand a voter base……..they did not earn that money. Dear Heavenly Father, again we come on bended knee to honor you Lord as our one True God. God in you we trust.
We come before You in this time of division and uncertainty. Our nation feels the weight of stalled decisions and closed doors, of families anxious about paychecks, and citizens weary of political strife.
Lord, You are the God of order, wisdom, and peace. We ask You to move in the hearts of our leaders — soften pride, dissolve stubbornness, and stir compassion for those they serve. Replace contention with cooperation, and replace fear with faith in Your greater plan.
Bless the workers and families who are suffering because of this shutdown. Provide for their needs, restore their hope, and remind them that You are their ultimate source and sustainer.
We pray for swift resolution — that truth, justice, and humility will guide every conversation and decision. Let unity rise where division has taken root, and may Your peace cover our nation once again.

As a single mother with children we receive help from the goverment and we received notice that the shutdown can affect those getting help, in the form of food and income. Father remove any fear that this shutdown has caused, we look to You for help- You are our source, You instruct us in Your word not to worry about what we will eat or wear because You care for us, love us and You are our great Provider. Praying daily for each member of Congress to come to the Lord. I say that if they are fighting so hard for illegals to have benefits then let all in favor pay extra taxes that fund illegals. Those not in favor don’t pay extra taxes.

The first thing the Legislature needs to do when they finally decide to go back to work is the NUMBER 1 change in law they need to make is that if they shut down the government, the first paychecks to go will be those of the congressmen and senators themselves.
As far as Senator Smith — it’s nice that her staff wanted to cover for her but there are biblical words of wisdom that apply to her statement—“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”
Praying that the congressmen and senators will learn to have as much compassion for other people as they have for themselves.
BK – agree 100% – but in addition, we need term limits on Congress! They have completely separated themselves from the Fed workforce, so none of this affects them. This was never supposed to be a lifelong career, where they’d get uber rich. It was supposed to be true public service for a few years, sacrificing for the interests of their constituents – then go back home to their private lives. They have lost touch with the American people, and should all lose their jobs….! :^(
Agree to term limits but I wrestle with length of term and hope they will use wisdom in choosing that limit. I think I’ve heard 12 years kicked around as the recommendation. I wrestle with length of term. Andy Biggs is my Congressman and I really like him. But you don’t always get a congressperson you like. 😎
But my predicament will come sooner than that. Hopefully he’ll be Arizona’s next governor, replacing the awful Katie Hobbs, and that still leaves the Fighting Fifth District in desperate need of a good solid congressman.
We could always go back to the original system which allowed each state legislature to choose the Senators for their Many framers (like Madison, Hamilton, and Gouverneur Morris) feared that direct elections could lead to volatile politics or demagoguery. Legislative appointment was seen as a safeguard — ensuring for “wise and deliberate” choices. This would need a constitutional amendment, but it would mitigate many of the issues we face today, including term limits.
I pray every day that God will help the Legislators behave like mature responsible adults rather than a group of unsupervised Kindergarteners.
Lord we pray for provision for the people who get assistance from the Government from other sources from your hand. Show the affected people where the water and honey they need to live can be obtained by your means and wisdom. Show the people that you are their source and the Government assistance is worthless not in operation possibly until early January 2026.

I have sent scripted replies by IFA to Ms. Smith as well as Ms. Klobushar senators of MN about topics such as Abortion. Crickets from Ms K. From Ms Smith staunch reply that she will not budge from her pro-abortion platform. Anything Godly and Holy these two demonic women oppose. And then we have this Ilman Oman jihadist against America. There are more corrupt politicians in MN. Sooo, sad.

Amy Klobuchar is so evil that her husband was saved from Death by covid using hydroxychloroquine in 2019 but she was so selfish she did not fight to have hydroxychloroquine made available for all her constituents let alone the whole country. I wrote to her and Tim Walz at the time to be heroes and make this available to everyone but as you can see neither one of them cared about their constituents.

Term Limits are long overdue! Those in Congress will never vote to impose term limits on themselves. That has to be a “grassroots” movement. IT IS TIME. Wake us up to our responsibility to participate in government by getting behind Godly candidates, electing them & praying for them.
