I Prayed have prayed
Lord, we ask that you would make us a spiritually discerning people. If we have allowed a spirit of offense into our hearts, which has opened the door to deception, we repent and ask that you would open our eyes to the truth that we are missing. Help us to lay aside any prejudice or misinformation.
Reading Time: 4 minutes

While peaceful protests continue, in every state some have turned violent. More than 800 people have been injured and nineteen are dead as businesses have been torched and police pelted with bottles and bricks. It’s hard to believe this is America.

What is this and how do we pray?

This isn’t about black vs. white, Democrat vs Republican, rich vs poor. It is a spirit which has been unleashed to create chaos.

What do we do when a spirit of suspicion has been unleashed?

It is essential that we are spiritually discerning in this hour. The Enemy is doing everything in his power to cause division, strife, rage, pain and destruction. Let’s not join him.

I am reminded of a teaching by Pastor Bill Johnson of Bethel Church in Redding, California that exposes what we are experiencing in our nation and around the world:

“Both the political spirit and religious spirit are vying for your affections and whenever there is influence from either of those two realms the word of the Lord becomes diluted and distorted. The Lord is wanting a clear word—a precise, empowering word, to come to the cities and nations of the world.”

“We are being lied to every day of our life. If you have anything to do in media you are being fed a bill of goods. But very little of it is intentional deception. Most of it is agenda driven.”

“When you are driven by an agenda that is wrong, you re-interpret circumstances incorrectly.”

Johnson goes on to share a story about how years ago, a satanist was converted. Then the media learned the pastor was giving the man a fair amount of money every month. The news organization assumed it was to keep the story alive. So they did a big expose. They reported the ex-satanist lived in a condo, overlooking a golf course and drove a Lincoln Continental.

“All those things were true, but they weren’t true at all,” Johnson explained.

“They were true in that the pastor was giving him a lot of money, but it was to pay for the counseling he needed because of the abusive environment in which he had grown up. The condo overlooking the golf course was actually an apartment and the golf course was a miniature-golf course. The Lincoln Continental was an old Lincoln covered in bumper stickers.”

It was true, but it wasn’t.

“Here’s what happens,” Johnson concluded, “Both the religious spirit and political spirit want to impart the gift of suspicion because that re-interprets circumstances and causes a spirit of offense to rise up that mirrors the prophetic anointing.”

“It’s a counterfeit prophetic anointing. When you rise in a spirit of offense, you have the same burning conviction and sense that something needs to be done, something needs to be said, but not recognizing the origin of the information is actually the spirit of deception.”

“The gift of suspicion gets imparted.”

“You can hear information and be righteously stirred up not realizing you were given wrong information even though your conviction is correct.”

“And whatever you misdiagnose you will mistreat.”

This is where we find ourselves. We have been lied to by the media whether intentionally or not, and we no longer trust what we read or hear anywhere.

For too long we have listened to agenda-driven information meant to illicit a knee-jerk response–a demand for justice. But if the agenda-driven information is only partial truth or erroneous, once believed, it feels like righteous indignation, but can be suspicion and deception.

And the nature of deception is that we are the ones deceived, but can’t see it. We then become a tool for the Enemy’s use.

We are there now. The spirit of suspicion has been unleashed.

Each one of us has only partial truth regarding the tragedy of George Floyd’s death—or any news story for that matter. This has been used against us.

We have a choice. We can either watch as our country is burned, looted, and destroyed as the Enemy laughs. Or we can repent, kneel down in humility, like the police officers in Miami as the protesters approached them…and pray together for reconciliation, healing, change, and the much-needed revival which is our only hope for true transformation.

We are being played. There is an agenda across the world to divide by any means possible–skin color, political affiliation, religious belief, economic or educational status, etc. Whatever it takes, division is the goal.

And when we accept the gift of suspicion it brings a package of offense.

This is a call to be spiritually discerning to what we see and hear.

How do we become more spiritually discerning?

1.Pay attention.

As we read or listen to a news story, what words are being used? Is the article simply telling us how to feel? Is there an intent meant to create a reaction? If it incites rage that is an indicator

2.Ask Questions.

Whether we are listening to a sermon or a news story, we need to do our own research to confirm that what we have heard is true. With the news that can be a challenge as truth is sometimes hidden and lies called truth. How can we know the truth? Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit. Search news sources in many areas and learn what both sides are saying.

3.Refuse Offense.

Once we take offense, we have opened the door to deception. You may have the right to be offended, but don’t. Forgive. It may feel like “righteous indignation,” but is it? Or is it simply a spirit of suspicion prompting us to take up offense?

4.Pray.

Years ago, my husband and I were unjustly accused over an issue. Once the truth was brought out into the open, we were completely vindicated. However, there was one couple in particular who had believed the lie and been outspoken in their condemnation of us. Once they were told by leadership that what they had believed was untrue, the wife replied, “Well, how could we have known?”

That’s a great question and the answer is, “By the fruit.” Remember: No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit (Lk 6:43).

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come (Jn 16:13).

What a wonderful reminder to take heed, lest he who thinks he stands, falls! 1 Cor. 10:12

Thanks again, Karen, for expanding on my lack of knowledge.
It’s truly significant these days. I received an election notice for our county. My daughter, an advocate, really gave me grief over not knowing about local views. This happened before and I found I really didn’t know How to access politically motivated information. I will have to do research instead of relying on all that stuff in the mail. ( Again, my daughter told me what a doof I am to believe
advertising.)
I wonder now how many realise how essential it is to make time to research. Current court cases should give us motivation.
Thanks again..

Karen, Thanks for your honesty. We have all fallen into that category at one time or another. Unfortunately we are now living in a time that we MUST do significant research and stay attuned to what is really happening, locally, in our state and nationally (not just what ads or the mainstream media feed us) in order to keep our nation and our freedom.

Karen: I did research in college and in a writing class. I remember how naive I felt when the instructor questioned a search engine I used. It was, ” but everyone uses….she replied they simply aren’t that reliable They don’t verify their information.” Much like your Bill Johnson story. ( I also have used Bill and Benny’s prayer, etc.materials and love to watch his tv program.) Its still the idea to me now, as your example, that a misleading truth is worse than a discernable lie. Recall Paul Harvey: now the rest of the story.
      Yes. And Amen.
      Bless you ..

Sadly I don’t believe much of anything I hear, see or read anymore as it seems that EVERYTHING is about an evil agenda and that includes within the church, I find myself even questioning newly (50 years old or younger) printed versions of the bible, how much of it has been bastardized to suit an agenda? It seems most appropriate anymore to just stay in my home with my hubby for worshipping of our Lord and to just get down on our knees and us pray together or alone!

I too love this article. Being someone who asks a lot of questions about everything!

Honestly I’m not surprised at anything that is happening here in America. How much bickering and fighting and lies can go on before God says ENOUGH. The Word says He will hand us over to our own passions in Romans 1. I can’t help but wonder does this include our need to be right? Even as Christians we all get it wrong at some time or another also. I wholeheartedly believe suspicions arise from this form of pride also.
God is so extraordinarily complex.

In today’s world it seems like everyone has something to say. It’s overwhelming. But then the pandemic hit and the world slowed down a minute. A prayer of my own heart, I couldn’t believe it answered! A true ‘eye of the storm’ moment.(I grew up on the coast of NC)
And then the other side of the storm comes, it’s inevitable!

Some days I wish I had more compassion for what is going on, instead I’m waiting inside my shelter, looking out the window at the stirring rage until I can go out and assess the damage. Some storms that is just all you can do..
wait and see, trusting in the One who has the entire perspective.
May the Lord bring His glorious beauty from the dust of the ashes.

My response more and more, (also from behind my window) is that those broken ones on the streets wreaking havoc would have an encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ and have the change of heart leading them to repentance and freedom from this evil trap laid for them. Jesus prayed ‘Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.’ This section of scripture doesn’t convey any powerful emotions Jesus may have been experiencing when he humbled himself to pray this prayer!

Also I encourage you to do this: read the Bible all the way through and underline every instance where the sovereignty of God is spoken of or alluded to. His sovereignty is so completely woven into the entire Bible that it is irrefutable. Bill Johnson and many like him preach a message that does not line up with God’s sovereignty. Goodness, his daughter said the Holy Spirit was blue and like the genie from Aladdin. Blasphemous!!!

Any time that you see a pastor/teacher who lowers God in any fashion from the Almighty, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Sovereign, God of Truth and Holiness and Righteousness that He is, you’ve found someone to be very wary of. True teachers will continuously elevate God and fully recognize the depravity of man, themselves included.

Praying for open eyes and that God is glorified.

It really concerns me that you reference Bill Johnson. He is clearly, undeniably a false teacher. His words should not be held up and quoted. He and Bethel are a danger to the body of Christ.

    Hi Teresa,

I’ve listened to Bill Johnson’s teachings extensively, and have not found that to be true. To what specifi ally are you referring to?

I agree 100% to reference false prophecy and teachers concerns me. Bethel in Redding is full of deception. This is a red flag for me in continuing to read your articles.

    Here are a few:

    – man is a “god” or “God” or “Jesus”.
    — Jesus took on the nature of Satan and was born again in hell.
    — there are nine persons in the Trinity.
    — Jesus died on the cross for physical healing.
    — Christians do not have the sin nature, and therefore do not sin.
    — Jesus gave up or lost His divinity at the incarnation.
    — God is not in complete control of His creation, and is not sovereign.
    — those who speak negative words against “God’s anointed” are unsaved agents of Satan who hate Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
    — the gospel “package” includes signs and wonders.
    — the gospel can’t be fully preached unless it includes signs and wonders.

To the person who called me deceived, that is a typical knee-jerk reaction of anger to those who have been deceived by this cult and have place Bill Johnson in a place too high for a human being to be in.

Research. Compare his teachings to actual scripture. American Gospel is an excellent movie to understand how some of these teachers deviate from God’s Word and are basically offering new age teachings. Doreen Virtue offers excellent videos on YouTube about God delivering her from the new age and about Him opening her eyes to the similarities of the teachings of Bethel and the New Age. The information and evidence is out there in abundance. To continue to cling desperately to the teachings of heresy is to live in idolatry of a man or an institution and not to fear the Lord and cling to the truth of God’s Holy Word!!!

Deep study of God’s Word and His attributes is the most freeing thing I have ever done. I know more of the truth or His character based on the Bible and not on the teachings of others. It enables me to recognize when people are spreading false doctrine. God is worthy of our praise, honor, and of us standing against deceptive teachings about Him, teachings that ensnare!!!

Couldn’t we agree that we all have an incomplete grasp on Scripture, and it behooves us all to prove all things and hold fast to that which is good? Yes, the Bible is God’s Word and by His spirit He teaches us as we seek knowledge of Him and all things that pertain to life and godliness in it. To my mind, this is why we can glean truth from anyone who endeavors to teach God’s Word, while discerning truth from error as we listen. Whether or not Bill Johnson’s spectrum of teaching entirely lines up, there is much wisdom we can receive from the article above, can we not? When Christ Jesus returns, all things will be made right and we will all have the same understanding of Truth. Bill’s video closes with the great Isaiah 51.12, that when we fear God, we will not fear men. That made my day today!

I am aware of SOME of the so-called heresy points and strongly disagree with your assessment of what Bethel/Bill Johnson is teaching and this is a perfect example of what this article is about. I am in my word for more than 40 years and more than most believers and you have twisted much of what you are saying that Bill Johnson has taught. EXACTLY what this article is talking about. And Jesus was rejected by the religious leaders as well. God is not supposed to do THAT! Be careful what you criticise!

Teresa, thank you for your list. I do like specifics and not just generalizations when refuting truth. I don’t know Bill Johnson’s doctrine and I’ve never heard “there are 9 persons in the Trinity”, and laughed to hear it, but immediately knew who they were from reading the Bible through every year since 2005: Father, Son, and the 7 spirits of God. Each of your examples has a true explanation and scripture references, it’s just not in the terminology you recognize. Even the one on God’s sovereignty can be seen by His relinquishing His Will by giving us the Choice to follow Him or not.
For myself, I refuse to be offended because that is the alternate terminology for PRIDE, a sin.

To those in disagreement with me, compare his teaching to the Word of God. Don’t be deceived that all division is wrong. Over and over and over we are warned in scripture to watch for false teachers. We can agree that we don’t have a full grasp of scripture but when someone very clearly speaks something of God that goes against scripture, we have a clear view that they value their own opinion of God over what His Word says. He is sovereign. That is my starting point. Many word of faith teachers say otherwise. That is enough for me to know to avoid their teaching. Be Bereans. That is all I’m asking. Read the Word, cover to cover, over and over, and learn less from teachers and more from His Word. And for goodness sakes, don’t be so quick to fight so hard for one man’s teaching over the Bible. It’s idolatry of a man.

Not taking offense is particularly vital, so we can keep our hearts open to really hear where people are coming from, and share the love of Christ with them. Christ is the only answer and the only place we’ll find unity in this life.
