WHAT IS GASLIGHTING?

We need wisdom in these days, Lord! Your Word tells us that when we ask for wisdom You give it.

“The term originates in the systematic psychological manipulation of a victim by her husband in Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 stage play Gas Light, and the film adaptations released in 1940 and 1944. In the story, the husband attempts to convince his wife and others that she is insane by manipulating small elements of their environment and insisting that she is mistaken, remembering things incorrectly, or delusional when she points out these changes. The play’s title alludes to how the abusive husband slowly dims the gas lights in their home, while pretending nothing has changed, in an effort to make his wife doubt her own perceptions. The wife repeatedly asks her husband to confirm her perceptions about the dimming lights, but in defiance of reality, he keeps insisting that the lights are the same and instead it is she who is going insane. Today, we are living in a perpetual state of gaslighting. The reality that what we are being told by the media is at complete odds with what we are seeing with our own two eyes. And when we question the false reality that we are being presented, or we claim that what we see is that actual reality, we are vilified as racist or bigots or just plain crazy. You’re not racist. You’re not crazy. You’re being gaslighted.

New York State has twice as many deaths from Covid-19 than any other state, and New York has accounted for one fifth of all Covid-19 deaths, but we are told that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has handled the pandemic better than any other governor. But if we support policies of Governors whose states had only a fraction of the infections and deaths as New York, we’re called anti-science and want people to die. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

We see mobs of people looting stores, smashing windows, setting cars on fire and burning down buildings, but we are told that these demonstrations are peaceful protests, and when we call this destruction of our cities, riots, we are called racists. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

We see the major problem destroying many inner-cities is crime; murder, gang violence, drug dealing, drive-by shootings, armed robbery, but we are told that it is not crime, but the police that are the problem in the inner-cities. We are told we must defund the police and remove law enforcement from crime-riddled cities to make them safer But if we advocate for more policing in cities overrun by crime, we are accused of being white supremacists and racists. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

The United States of America accepts more immigrants than any other country in the world. The vast majority of the immigrants are “people of color”, and these immigrants are enjoying freedom and economic opportunity not available to them in their country of origin, but we are told that the United States is the most racist and oppressive country on the planet, and if we disagree, we are called racist and xenophobic So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

Capitalist countries are the most prosperous countries in the world. The standard of living is the highest in capitalist countries. We see more poor people move up the economic ladder to the middle and even the wealthy class through their effort and ability in capitalist countries than any other economic system in the world, but we are told capitalism is an oppressive system designed to keep people down. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

Communist countries killed over 100 million people in the 20th century. Communist countries strip their citizens of basic human rights, dictate every aspect of their lives, treat their citizens as slaves, and drive their economies into the ground, but we are told that Communism is the fairest, most equitable, freest, and most prosperous economic system in the world. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

The most egregious example of gaslighting is the concept of “white fragility”. You spend your life trying to be a good person, trying to treat people fairly and with respect. You disavow racism and bigotry in all its forms. You judge people solely on the content of their character and not by the color of their skin. You don’t discriminate based on race or ethnicity. But you are told you are a racist, not because of something you did or said, but solely because of the color of your skin. You know instinctively that charging someone with racism because of their skin color is itself racist. You know that you are not racist, so you defend yourself and your character, but you are told that your defense of yourself is proof of your racism. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

Gaslighting has become one of the most pervasive and destructive tactics in American politics. It is the exact opposite of what our political system was meant to be. It deals in lies and psychological coercion, and not the truth and intellectual discourse. If you ever ask yourself if you’re crazy, you are not. Crazy people aren’t sane enough to ask themselves if they’re crazy. So, trust yourself, believe what’s in your heart. Trust your eyes over what you are told. Never listen to the people who tell you that you are crazy, because you are not, you’re being gaslighted.

Sophocles said: ” What people believe prevails over the truth .” And that’s what the media are trying to exploit…”

Editor’s Note: Yes, the Enemy seeks to twist the truth. We see it all around us. It’s hard to fathom the beliefs that people are willing to subscribe to about identity, value of life, health, government, and other issues. It’s an upside down world. These mental mind games are designed to throw us off and reframe a lie into truth. As believers, we have the blessing of  the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to guide us to the truth.

  1. A Bible verse for this hour in our history…1 John 4:4-6

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

Thank you for a Wonderful article. I had not heard of this term or it’s backstory.

We praise the Lord for truth and the defense of truth. May the Spirit of truth prevail in the United States of America. God bless each Truth teller. Amen

    Amen! 9
  2. A skein of wool can become so the tangled that the knots will just not undo..and in the same way the lies perpetrated in the world are becoming more and more tangled as their origins seem imperceptable and hard to trace and result in an impossible mess.
Only Jesus can fix this “mess” He came to set us free. He said ” You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” in John 8:32
He gave immunity, impunity and freedom from our sin and its impermeable tangles. He gave us freedom from our incommutable death sentence by dying for us on the cross.. and then sent us the Holy
Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, to lead us into all truth. “Come unto me all ye that are heavy burdened and ye shall find rest for your souls, take my yoke upon you for my burden is easy and my yoke is light. We need to turn back to our first love and seek him for revival the true Church and for the restoration of our lands. God lives on this earth today through His Church who are to be salt and light and it is not by might nor by power but by my Spirit says the Lord. We can do nothing unless we are filled with his Spirit, as individuals or as nations without God.
Seek him Church, turn to God and seek to be filled with his Spirit to do the might works He would have us do.. and our fight is not with flesh and blood but with principalities and spiritual forces and spiritual wickedness in high places we cannot overcome unless we war against lies..and propaganda in the spiritual realm that are constantly putting out lies into men’s minds to overcome and drag them down into the depths and depravity of the carnal life which is where we all are sinners… through faith in Christ and a desire to overcome this fleshly nature in all of us can through the power and help of the Holy Spirit, but we must in earnestness turn to God and repent of our carnality and receive His forgiveness and strength to fight sin in every corner. First in ourselves and then in our nations.
Revive us O Lord to know and love you more, forgive us and help us see our own evil ways and find the freedom and strength that you alone can provide, thank-you dear Jesus for sharing your victory with us, help us all to be overcomers today I ask in your blessed name.

    Amen! 17
  3. We’re coerced into taking an experimental gene therapy with ingredients 70% of the population is allergic to, that gives you shingles, blood clots and infertility so we won’t get the worst symptoms of a disease we have over a 95% chance of surviving and over 99% chance of surviving with cheap, proven medication. So, we ask ourselves, am I crazy? No, you’re being gaslighted.

Lord, may we turn to You, the Light of the world!

    Amen! 15
  4. A simpler explanation of what gaslighting is…When you have apples but they are telling you, you have oranges. It’s coming from a lying, deceiving, evil spirit.

    Amen! 17
  5. There is a strong delusion over some in this country. Some are calling evil, good and good, evil. We need to pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit, and discernment, constantly, because the enemy has more “tools” to deceive us now. Pictures can be “doctored,” words “edited,” etc. I’m amazed at how easy it is for people to be deceived and “gaslighted.” I think this is especially true for young people, they don’t have the history or experience that those of us who are older have. Young people, who have been raised in the church, are “buying” in to the deception that is rampant in our country now. Thankfully, not all of them have, but it is concerning.

    Amen! 19
  6. Dear Lord, we need Your wisdom more than ever! I know that You will give wisdom to whoever asks for it. Thank You Lord, for Your wisdom, knowledge, and discernment. In Jesus name, Amen!

    Amen! 36
  7. “Gaslighting” is a new term for me. But I have experienced this throughout my life. However, with a solid background in God’s Word, the washing of the watering of His Word cleanses you from these demonic spirits attacking you and who are on those, like husbands, who have the jezebel spirit on them of control. Each time this has happened in my life, the marriage was over, because I want to live, not die. and then one disguised the jezebel spirit by calling out a wife to submit to her husband. Ha!!! Holy Spirit prevails Praying for individuals to ask Abba Father for great wisdom and discernment of the spirits in the DAYS OF DECEPTIION AND OF CALLING GOOD EVIL AND EVIL GOOD!!! EKKLESIA, IT IS PAST TIME FOR YOU TO AWAKEN AND ARISE AND BE THE GLORIOUS CHURCH OF THIS ERA!

    Amen! 8
  8. I stand in agreement with all of you to come against this twisting and lying lavithan spirit that is operating through our media outlets I declare Isaiah 27 In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan that piercing serpent , even leviathan that crooked serpent;and he shall slay that dragon into the sea! The word of God is alive and active for the word of God is quick and POWERFUL AND SHARPER THAN ANY TWO EDGED SWORD ⚔️ piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart 🔥🙌

    Amen! 24
  9. This is the most succinct and thorough article I have read regarding gaslighting and how the media and political elite are using it to manipulate the population. Excellent work!

    Amen! 42
    1. Excellent. Yes at times I think am I crazy or is the world really gone bonkers!!!!! Without God, His Word and The Holy Spirit I would be confused and overwhelmed… the root of this gaslighting is the lies of Satan. Without the Holy Spirit we will be deceived as so many are!!!! Timed to stay close to Him His words and His law. Thank you Lord that You have overcome the world and did not leave us as orphans.

      Amen! 28
  10. I declare and decree that the truth will prevail in the United States of America!
Jesus Christ is Lord in the United States of America and our country will fulfill the destiny which we were created for! In the name of Jesus Christ Almighty God!

    Amen! 48
  11. A family member has been making false or exaggerated claims, causing me to question my very essence. She seems to justify her lack of faith by claiming that Christians are hateful and racist.
I pray for her. God has given me peace and the quietness to not contact her, because contact leads first to shunning and then to more accusations.

    Amen! 15
    1. My heart goes out to you,Lori. Love for your family member brings conflict over her words and lack of faith. I see purity in your essence and willingness to share the sufferings of our Savior in silence. Your prayers will be more effective than any rebuttal.

      Amen! 8
      1. Mel, thank you for your kindness in responding. My daughter made a profession of faith in Christ as a child and followed Him until she went to college.
God bless you, Mel, and your family. I covet your prayers.

  12. You are so correct!!…. so we must turn to the ONLY TRUTH …GOD’s WORD for the REAL TRUTH…. remembering …EVERYTHING IS FALLING INTO PLACE…GOD IS IN CONTROL!!!!

    Amen! 31
  13. This explains for me what is truly happening. But what makes me sad is that the church is complicit in this. Instead of seeking truth, they are following the world’s guidelines. Even in my family we are divided. I pray in the spirit and thank God for His continued mercy.

    Amen! 36
  14. There is nothing worse than to find out that the one you love most gaslights you. And others.
May the Lord point out to them the anguish and destruction they cause and pray they will be convicted and repent.

    Amen! 31
  15. Thank you for explaining what gaslighting meant because I was not sure. This article has a great overview of what is taking place in America. I hope the anarchist’s and deceiving, both paid and unpaid people, stop the menacing behavior we had seen on the news or some had personally experienced sadly enough, and work toward our nation’s safety and prosperity.

    Amen! 34
