Last week, Vice President JD Vance spoke at the March for Life, promising that the Trump administration would continue its partnership with the pro-life movement. However, just before the march, over 76 Republicans voted to kill legislation that would have prevented taxpayer money from funding abortion clinics.

Vance used most of his time on the March For Life’s National Mall stage to tout the Trump administration’s pro-life track record including historic pardons for the prayerful protestors persecuted and prosecuted by the Biden administration, undoing Biden-era taxpayer-funded abortion at home and overseas, and expanding conscience protections for medical professionals with religious or moral objections to ending life in the womb.

While the VP acknowledged there is still much work to do, something he referred to as “an elephant in the room,” he committed to “hear” and “understand” the pro-life movement’s concerns.

“Let me tell you something very simple. Under this administration, again, from the president of the United States, the vice president, you have an ally in the White House,” Vance promised.

While the Vice President’s words are encouraging, they don’t tell the full story. As The Federalist notes, his comments come just weeks after President Trump encouraged Republicans to be “flexible on Hyde,” the amendment that has for decades prohibited taxpayer-funded abortions. The White House has since attempted to walk this comment back.

Many Republicans, however, have softened on abortion. Last Thursday, 76 House Republicans joined with Democrats to kill an amendment to a FY2026 government spending bill. This amendment would have kept millions in taxpayer dollars from funding entities that practice abortion and trans treatments for minors.

A day before the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., 76 House Republicans joined their Democrat colleagues in defeating a measure aimed at preventing taxpayer dollars from bankrolling facilities that perform abortions and “trans” surgeries on children.

The moment came late Thursday afternoon when the GOP-controlled House of Representatives killed an amendment put forward by Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., to a FY2026 government spending bill. The amendment sought to ax Senate-inserted earmarks that allocate millions in taxpayer money to entities that conduct harmful “trans” procedures on minors and abortions.

The final House vote was 136-291, with nine members not voting. Here’s the roll call showing how every member voted.

This outcome isn’t good, but it’s also not entirely surprising. Many on the right have been softening on abortion for years now. The party itself, in fact, has softened. As we covered in 2024, the GOP adopted a platform that some have gone so far as to call pro-choice.

Abortion continues to be a serious issue in our nation, with untold numbers of babies dying every year. And yet, as time marches on, it seems that fewer and fewer lawmakers care about protecting these babies. When will it end?

As the Trump administration moves into its second year, let’s pray that it and Republicans on the national stage would stand for life. Let’s pray for a complete end to abortion in America, and let’s pray for the protection of every unborn child!
