(The Center Square) – Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., plans to bring a Republican elections reform bill to the floor [this] week and kickstart a marathon debate that could potentially last days.

The move is an attempt to appease a vocal minority of Republicans who have called for Thune to revive the “talking filibuster,” which would require Democrats to hold the floor in order for the Senate’s 60-vote threshold to remain in force.
President Donald Trump endorsed the talking filibuster, but Thune has argued that there is not enough support in the Republican Caucus.
The marathon debate is unlikely to change the minds of enough Democrats to overcome the filibuster. But Thune and his supporters argue that it will at least force Senate Democrats to go on the record about why they oppose the House-passed SAVE America Act.
“I can’t guarantee an outcome on this legislation. But I can guarantee that we are going to put Democrats on the record,” Thune told lawmakers. “That they will be forced to defend their outrageous positions on these issues – and explain to the American people why common sense and the Democratic Party have parted ways.”
The SAVE America Act would mandate that Americans display a valid ID to vote in federal elections, require people to present proof of citizenship when registering to vote, and necessitate in-person voter registration for federal elections.
It also directs states to remove all noncitizens from their voter rolls.
Under the legislation, people would not be able to register to vote with only their driver’s license, since noncitizens can obtain that. They would instead need to present documents proving U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport.
“Only American citizens should be able to vote in our elections. Period. This shouldn’t be controversial,” Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., said on social media Friday. “If Democrats want to block something that the overwhelming majority of Americans agree with – be my guest.”
Democrats have dubbed the bill “Jim Crow 2.0,” arguing it could make it harder for minorities, the disabled, and married women to register to vote.
Thune, however, called Democrats’ rhetoric “unforgivable” and “insulting.”
“Either Democrats are just reflexively opposing this proposal because it originated from Republicans, or Democrats believe that there are in fact people out there voting illegally and that it’s benefiting Democrats, and they want to keep it going,” Thune told lawmakers Thursday.
“I honestly cannot think of another reason to oppose something so eminently reasonable as requiring people to demonstrate that they’re eligible to vote – and that they are who they say they are when they go to the polls.”

Our Heavenly Father. Please help pass the SAVE America Act in the Senate and House.
I know they have to do their debating and possible filibuster talking on and on.
Please let all the Republicans vote for this bill and Democrats too. It’s a Win-Win
bill. We always voted with voter ID before and paper ballots. COVID changed all
that and they went to Machines that could be rigged and mail in ballots that could
be duplicated and tampered with.
Please take care of this situation. Let both sides see this for what it really is.
Fair and honest elections that will bring the right God given person into office.
Congress does pray before they start. Maybe they can have a filibuster prayer!!

Father, I pray John Thune would continue in his stand to make the Democrats hold the floor vocally to maintain the filibuster. May the Save Act pass and may it be revealed to everyone that the Democrats are really standing against this legislation. We look to you to bring righteousness to our nation and save us. You are good and wise; lead our Senators in your wisdom!

I pray the truth would get out there about the Save act. Many left leaning people in WI around me believe that with the act women will need more proof of identity like a birth certificate and passport and more because of the marriage name change. I pray what is required would be clearly defined and broadcast far and wide. I believe some democrat legislators and congressmen are spreading lies or at least exagerating about this. Do we need a presidential address about this? Please pray about this and if necessary can someone get a message to the president? Thank you!
Holy Lord of heaven, and Soverign Lord over our nation, we appeal to you. We ask Lord, that the wisdom of your divine Spirit, given to those submitted to you; to speak with power and conviction, persuading both Democrats and Republicans that are not in favor of this act. Open blind eyes, and callous hearts, so the American People can have the protection of their votes secured. We believe that Lord you will use this filibuster in a way that either brings change and submission to your call, or exposes the raw intentions of some Senatators to vote contrary to the desire of the American People. Lord may this filibuster achieve the desire of your heart to usher in a mighty revival, as we ardently seek your face for repentance in every way we have dishonored you as a nation and your people. We glorify you Lord, and trust you to bring unity in this nation by the Spirit of righteousness, and truth.
Heavenly Father, I pray that You give your wisdom to all those in favor of the SAVE America Act. Give to them power of persuasion. Please grant a decisive and quick outcome of victory to this bill. Thank you for Congressmen Chip Roy and Mike Lee for writing the bill. May it truly fulfill its mission to Save American Voter Eligibility. Let all the successful court cases that have proven that thousands of ballots were wrongly certified be made known! Let all the states follow Florida’s lead and pass their own version of a SAVE act that works with the federal law. Thank you for everyone who has so diligently worked to expose fraud and clean up the corruption. Open the eyes of all those who still to this day refuse to see and admit all the blatant fraud and corruption! It is time for you to act oh God, and send the Spirit of the fear of the Lord into the Senate Chambers until they pass the Save Act! Let nothing be hidden, but all deceit and lies, exposed, and let the truth be embraced. We ask you to remember all that President Trump and our nation went through in the 2020 election, where many people and most every state were deceitful and dishonest and defrauded our nation in this election.
Do not let them get by with deceit now oh Lord. Our nation is being rededicated to you on May 17 and we must, as a Senate, and as a nation, wemust fear You and walk in Your ways. Breathe on John Thune causing him to bow the knee to You, and not to politics, and not to compromise. Lord Jesus, I pray for Your will to prevail in the passage of the SAVE Act in the Senate. obviously, this would be a huge step in the right direction to secure all of our elections. Taking away the ability for non-Americans to have the right to vote is of utmost importance. Not only do these people need to be deported ASAP, they should NEVER have the right to vote in ANY election. Thank You Jesus.
Father, send Your warring angels over the senate to protect those senators who are for this act. Send Holy Spirit to hover over the Senate to “birth” something new among those who call themselves democrats, and those who want to vote “for” this act be are afraid. Shake this assembly with Your very presence. This act upholds our Constitutional rights and freedoms. Speak to those opposed. May the fear of the Lord fall upon the entire assembly. And for those opposed, Lord, may shame fall upon them. May they be uprooted and lose their seat in the Senate. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
