President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy the National Guard and other federal resources to Memphis, Tennessee, in an effort to combat the city’s rising crime crisis. Memphis currently faces the highest crime rate per 100,000 people in the nation, according to FBI data from 2024, making it one of the most dangerous cities in America.

Speaking on Fox & Friends, Trump said, “We’re going to Memphis. Memphis is deeply troubled… We’ll bring in the military too, if we need it.” He emphasized that both Memphis Mayor Paul Young, a Democrat, and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, a Republican, expressed openness to federal support.

Representative David Kustoff (R-TN), who represents part of Memphis, welcomed the announcement, highlighting the importance of permanent federal law enforcement cooperation to restore order and provide lasting safety for residents. Kustoff pledged to continue working with the White House to secure these resources.

Mayor Young acknowledged discussions with the President and Governor earlier in the week, stating he is “committed to working to ensure any efforts strengthen our community and build on our progress.” However, local opposition has emerged. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris (D) criticized the move, warning it could stoke confusion and infringe on freedoms such as the right to protest. Harris vowed to resist what he described as an “incursion into Tennessee.”

The debate reflects a deeper divide over the role of federal intervention in cities struggling with violent crime. Supporters argue the presence of National Guard troops will bring much-needed stability, protection for families, and reassurance for law-abiding citizens. Critics, however, fear heavy-handed tactics and unintended consequences.

For Christians, the situation highlights the biblical mandate for government to act as a “servant of God to do you good” and to bear the sword against wrongdoing (Romans 13:4). While maintaining liberty is essential, so too is protecting innocent lives from violence and disorder. In a time when communities are suffering under rampant crime, prayer is needed both for leaders making weighty decisions and for the people of Memphis, that safety, peace, and justice would prevail.

As America faces ongoing struggles with violence, corruption, and division, the faithful are called to lift up their nation in prayer, seeking God’s mercy and wisdom for leaders at every level. The deployment to Memphis is not merely a political decision but a spiritual crossroads, and Christians should pray for righteous leadership, wise governance, and protection for all.

Lord, please protect all law enforcement and the innocent people in Memphis. Let there be peace in that city and in our country. Work in the hearts of those local officials who oppose this to want the same. In Jesus name I pray
