President Donald Trump said he has already directed what should happen if Iran succeeds in carrying out a long-standing threat against his life, highlighting the continued hostility between the United States and the Iranian regime.

Trump’s remarks come as tensions remain high in the Middle East following renewed conflict involving Iran and continued concerns about Tehran’s support for regional proxy groups. The president’s comments also follow reports of an alleged Iranian assassination plot, although Trump said such threats have existed for years and are not the result of any recent intelligence.

President Donald J. Trump stated in an interview on Friday that he has left instructions to retaliate against Iran with unprecedented force should its regime succeed in assassinating him. Trump’s remarks come amid reports that Israel flagged an Iranian plot to target him, though the President stated that Tehran has long sought his death following his authorization of a 2020 strike that killed Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commander General Qasem Soleimani.

Trump stressed that Iran has consistently targeted him since the Soleimani strike. “No, no, Israel came up with nothing,” Trump said of the reports that Israel had detected a threat against him, explaining: “I’ve been number one [on Iran’s kill list] for a long time, and it’s the way life is, you know.” The President also reiterated his stance, first articulated at the NATO summit in Turkey earlier this week, that the ceasefire with Iran is over due to its failure to keep to its agreements, calling its leaders “scum”.

The threats against Trump date back to the January 2020 U.S. military operation that killed Soleimani near Baghdad International Airport. The strike marked a significant turning point in U.S.-Iran relations and prompted repeated vows of retaliation from Iranian leaders.

In the years since, U.S. officials have disclosed multiple alleged Iranian plots targeting former Trump administration officials. Federal prosecutors have announced criminal cases involving individuals accused of participating in assassination-for-hire schemes tied to Iran, while intelligence agencies have continued to warn that the threat remains active. At the same time, recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent U.S. military strikes against Iranian assets have added to concerns that tensions between the two nations could escalate further.

For Christians, this story is another reminder to pray for wisdom and discernment for those entrusted with governing the nation and making decisions involving war and peace. Scripture calls us to pray “for kings and all who are in high positions” (1 Timothy 2:2), asking God to guide leaders in the pursuit of justice, protect innocent lives, and restrain those who seek violence. As instability continues in the Middle East, let us pray for the peace of Israel, for God’s protection over all those affected by regional conflict, and for President Trump’s safety.
