From the Daily Caller:

Nvidia has told Chinese customers that it can start shipping them its second-most powerful chip, the H200, before mid-February.

President Donald Trump’s decision this month to reverse a Biden-era ban on the export to China of advanced chips and approve the sale of H200s is a grave mistake, wrong both strategically and morally.

Trump, keeping a pre-election promise to tech billionaires, is giving China the means to surpass the United States in the critical race to dominate Artificial Intelligence (AI). Moreover, China will almost certainly use the chip for military purposes.

In a Truth Social post announcing the decision, President Trump wrote, “We will protect National Security, create American Jobs, and keep America’s lead in AI.” Chang notes, however, that the decision to sell advanced chips to China challenges the President’s first and third statements. It will not protect national security, and it will not keep America at the forefront of the AI arms race.

According to Dmitri Alperovitch, the co-founder of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike cited in the article, China will “take Nvidia chips while they are available, use them to train models to compete with American frontier variants and continue to invest heavily in domestic alternatives like Huawei’s Ascend chips.” These Nvidia chips will allow China to “bridge a crucial gap” according to Chang, as the communist state will use these chips, better than the ones they have now, to catch up to America.

As Chang notes, however, the AI arms race is far less concerning than the actual arms race. He notes that the U.S. won’t be able to control these chips once they enter China, and they will inevitably end up falling into the hands of the Chinese military thanks to Xi Jinping’s “military-civil fusion.”

What’s most concerning here is the President’s shift on China. According to Brandon Weichert, the National Interest’s senior national security editor, “In the first term, he embraced a robust strategy of deterrence, containment, and resistance to China’s aggressive rise. In the second term, Trump has opted for a more cooperative rather than competitive framework.”

While this cooperation may lead to short-term peace and economic growth, it may very well create a stronger, more threatening China in the long-term. Chang notes that the Trump administration is currently conducting an interagency review of the sale of these chips to China. Let’s pray that our leaders make the right choice!
