President Trump recently signed a memorandum to crack down on crime in Memphis, formally establishing the “Memphis Safe Task Force” at the behest of Tennessee’s elected officials.

“It’s very important because of the crime that’s going on, not only in Memphis, in many cities, and we’re going to take care of all of them step by step, just like we did in DC,” Trump said ahead of the signing.

“We have virtually no crime in DC right now, and we’re going to keep it that way,” he added. “It’s our nation’s capital, we’re going to keep it that way, or we’re going to federalize it if we had to, but we don’t have to anymore because it’s in such great shape.”

Trump highlighted Memphis’s status in 2024 as the American city with the highest violent crime rate, the third-highest murder rate, and the highest property crime rate.

The President reportedly signed the memo at the behest of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty. You can view the signing below.

This comes after the President’s crime crackdown in D.C. Although Democrat mayor Muriel Bowser initially opposed the federalization, she eventually relented after seeing an undeniable drop in crime.

While President Trump had floated Chicago and Baltimore as potential next steps, he eventually settled on Memphis. He could’ve made this decision in order to avoid a legal battle with the Democrat governors of Illinois and Maryland.
