China‘s Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric power station, is facing the highest flood pressure in years as the nation continues to battle a severe deluge crisis following the coronavirus outbreak.

Raging floodwaters rushed into the dam’s reservoir at a staggering 60,000 cubic metres per second on Monday after some people feared the huge lake could burst under strain.

Earlier this month, the dam’s operator admitted to state media that the 2.3-kilometre-long structure had ‘shifted, leaked and become deformed‘ slightly, but ensured that it was functioning well and safe to use. . . .

Chinese provinces along the down streams of the Yangtze River, including Hubei, Anhui and Jiangxi, have seen a large part of its land inundated by floodwaters this month. . . .

Wuhan, which just fought the COVID-19 crisis, even saw the mighty waterway hanging over four metres above its street levels, leading residents to shore up dykes in a hurry.

Online speculation soon emerged that Three Gorges Dam, standing 185 metres tall on the Yangtze, might crumble and even collapse under the pressure of flooding.

A CGI video showing the potential consequences of the dam’s total disintegration went viral on social media last week, stoking up more fears.

The clip, produced by an unknown source, shows towns and cities in the lower reaches of the Yangtze quickly becoming submerged in the catastrophic scenario.

Beijing’s state news agency Xinhua on July 27 affirmed the dam’s safety to the public after the third flood of the year hit the vaunted complex the same day at a top speed of 60,000 cubic metres.

In a bid to refute the online speculation, the outlet said that the dam had reduced the volume of the surge by 36.7 per cent and had more room to embrace even more deluge.

Just nine days earlier, the second flood of the year pounded into the dam at the same maximum rate.

Xinhua claimed that the water level of the dam’s reservoir had fallen to 158.56 metres after the safe discharge. The figure is less than 17 metres from the reservoir’s tested maximum reach of 175 metres.

Officials stressed that the lake could receive a further 14.1 billion cubic metres of floodwaters if necessary.

Officials in Wuhan, where the novel coronavirus emerged late last year, warned residents to take precautions as water levels fast approached their maximum guaranteed safety level. The Ministry of Water Resources said 93 rivers remained above warning levels, adding that the Three Gorges reservoir, China’s biggest, will need to be closely monitored as incoming floodwaters surge.

‘The current flood control situation remains severe and cannot be relaxed in any way,’ it said.

Regions throughout China have been ordering emergency evacuations as a result of landslides, burst riverbanks and mountain floods.

China has vowed to take a scientific approach to manage floods and has made use of early warning systems as well as its dams and reservoirs to try to minimise the damage.

More than 45 million people have been affected since flood season began in June, with at least 142 people dead or missing.

But the figure is lower than usual, state news agency Xinhua said last week.

Direct economic damage, at just over 160 billion yuan ($17. 6billion), was also lower than the five-year average.

However, experts say the heaviest rainfall in decades has exposed the country’s overreliance on giant feats of engineering like the Three Gorges Dam, to regulate and utilise its water supplies.
