Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the better part of a year, you’ve probably heard the news (sometimes translated as “furor,” “uproar,” or “consternation”) about the total solar eclipse our nation will be experiencing on April 8. Lodgings in the path of totality across 15 states have been sold out for months. Food and gasoline shortages and traffic snarls (predicated on all the visitors flocking in to see it from out of state and around the world) are expected. Oklahoma is prepared to deploy its National Guard to help keep order, and Indiana has already declared a statewide emergency.
There’s also been a lot of talk about the eclipse in some Christian circles—particularly the fact that the path of totality includes seven American cities called Nineveh (located in Texas, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York)—and one in Nova Scotia, just for good measure.
The Bible is clear that God speaks to us through nature and signs in the heavens, with more than 100 verses mentioning this. What might not be as clear right is: What is God saying to us right now through this event?
We’re not going to try to tell you anything definitively about that, or whether the five-fold ministry (which includes the apostolic and prophetic offices, as well as the more commonly accepted ones of evangelists, teachers, and preachers) still exists today. We understand that our readers encompass a wide variety of ecumenical flavors, as does our staff. One of the things we do at The Stream, as well as in our parent organization, is camp out around our commonalities rather than divide over our differences.
But what we can say for certain is that the Bible tells us two things: God always tells His prophets before He takes significant action (Amos 3:7), and that a thing is established by the testimony of two or three witnesses (2 Corinthians 13:1). In this case, there are more than two or three witnesses telling us several things—and they are remarkably similar. Whether you believe in modern-day prophecy or not, that warrants some attention.
To summarize the main points of what is being discussed: Jesus said,
“An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.” (Matthew 12:39-41 ESV)
The key to what this means for us may lie in Jonah 3:
Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. The word reached[c] the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it. (verses 4-10)
It’s obvious at a glance that our nation has some pretty evil policies currently in place—some things our elected officials need to turn from in a serious way. We mention those on a daily basis at The Stream.
Jonah warned the people of Nineveh that they had a 40-day window in which to turn away from what they’d been doing and toward God before they reaped the consequences of their behavior. What is important about that number for us?
Forty days from April 8 is May 18—the eve of Pentecost, the day when God poured out the Holy Spirit on His Church and everything changed forever. There were tongues of fire, people speaking in languages they did not know, and signs and wonders breaking out—and the Holy Spirit actually came to live inside believers forever. The Comforter had come. And that small group of people who had gathered in the Upper Room turned the world completely upside down.
The Bible tells us a couple of other important things that are extremely relevant right now, too. One is found in Isaiah 60:
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will be seen upon you.
And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising. (verses 1-3)
This tells us two things are happening simultaneously: The darkness is getting thicker and grosser—but God’s glory is shining on, within, and through His people in such a way that it draws the hungry toward His Kingdom. Not just individuals, but powerful leaders and entire nations.
I think we can all agree the darkness is pretty gross right now.
The other takeaway is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. Let’s read this with some emphasis added:
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, THEN I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
What if the 40-day window that opens on April 8 is the 2 Chronicles 7:14 moment for the American Church? What if every person who identifies as a Christian, regardless of their ecumenical background, were to take part in a 40-day fast of some kind—giving up either food, time, or other activities each day in order to seriously pray, engage in at least identificational repentance for our nation’s wicked ways, and ask God to shift it back? As America goes, so goes the world; if our light goes out, the darkness will be very gross, indeed.
For that reason, I personally would like to encourage every person reading this to consider taking part in a 40-day fast of some kind (Catholic friends, I apologize for bringing this up so hard on the heels of Lent. I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t really important!). Some people might be hard-core enough to only drink water for that time; others might do a Daniel fast; still others might go without social media or other things that take up hours of their time every day in order to pray. Find a gathering of other believers to join with, either in person or online; dedicate yourselves to it corporately, just as the disciples did in the Upper Room.
What if, after 40 days of doing that, we experienced the greatest outpouring of His Spirit on our nation (and from there, the rest of the globe) that anyone has ever heard of? What if this is what kicks off the Billion-Soul Harvest that many have long said would take place before the Lord comes back for His spotless Bride? What if this is the beginning of the process that helps actually make us spotless?
We may not know all the answers to those questions—but what have we got to lose by trying?
Perhaps the answer to that question is found in Esther 4:14, when Mordecai tells his niece about the grave situation their people face, and the powerful opportunity that lies before her:
“For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise … from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

As I had the awesome privilege to watch the amazing full solar eclipse, I was reminded as the sun went behind the moon just how awesome and marvelous our God is! I also felt the Holy Spirit speaking to me as it turned dark that our nation and world are getting darker in sin. It was very troubling to my soul….BUT THEN, as the sun began to show it’s brilliance once again I was reminded that Jesus is “The Light of the World” and that the darkness could not overcome it. Just a small sliver of the sun breaking forth with glorious light once again!! My prayer is that the church will wake from it’s slumber and repent and let our light shine to a lost and dying world, because I do believe that our days are short and the Lord is returning soon. Praying for a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our nation and world!! Come Lord, Jesus!!
I saw the eclipse today. I really enjoyed it and blessed God for making everything so perfect so people could enjoy it. The fact we have such eclipses is a miracle
The size and distance of the moon and the sun to the earth has to be just right for us to experience this marvel. Whether this is a sign or not,, time will tell. Nevertheless, prayer, fasting and repentance is surely needed especially now

The Eclipse itself is not the ultimate sign. The ultimate sign is the reaction of the people going crazy with fearful superstition. Jesus talked about fear in the hearts of people also with their love growing cold.

The data about the path crossing seven cities named Nineveh is not true. I believe it’s only two.
Maybe there are only two in the path of the totality, but if you look at a map you will see that there are indeed at least seven cities named Nineveh within the path of the eclipse. And I’m not sure that this article is speaking of “technicalities” as much as it is is speaking of the meaning of our calling to dedication at this time. In 2017, the eclipse crossing over the opposite way went over seven towns named Salem.
Put the two together and they display the Tav, the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
Add in the 2023 eclipse, and they all 3 display the Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. All three eclipses together displaying that Jesus is the first and the last.

God Almighty does not care if we watch, see, vacation to see this Eclipse. What God CARES about is that we are getting right with God, have a relationship with God, communicating with God regularly and moving to a more righteous, moral, and ethical being as well as repenting and reforming when not being good.

Well point 1. This is preaching to the choir. Probably everyone who reads this already knows why we are on the brink of judgment. 2. 40 days after the eclipse can’t be Pentecost because we haven’t had Passover yet. No one seems to care that we are not on God’s calendar. 3. It would be a bona fide miracle if evangelical and charismatic churches would pay attention to God’s priorities rather than their best life now temporal desires.
Over the years I have gathered with many who have gathered to repent on behalf of the nation or a city or the church itself. I am not saying God did not hear our prayers, but what was lacking was the message to all those we were praying for to repent themselves of dead works and their own lovelessness to go in the name of Jesus.
Jonah went to the city of Nineveh after avoiding the command of God to go and warn Nineveh. He had to go through being thrown overboard by heathens and be swallowed up by a whale before he humbled himself to agree with God and do what He said do.
We have to be willing to be the answer to our prayers. This is where the true believers in America need to repent. They have not obeyed the command of God to go into the cities and preach the Gospel, not in the churches, but in the open air like Jonah did. He went into the city. He cried out and warned everyone in that city that judgement was at their door if they did not repent (turn from their wrong course, wicked ways, and agree with God in doing what honors Him).
So we can pray “identificational prayers” all day long, but if we do not go into the highways and byways and tell them what Jesus said “Repent!” and compel the people (good, bad, lame, etc. ) to come to the marriage supper of the Lamb, we have not fulfilled our obedience to God as disciples, And if we do not want to pay the price of being a disciple which is everything, are you worthy of Him? He says we are to count the cost. I dare say very few Americans Christians even know what that means based on the condition of the church and this nation. This nation is reprobate because the Church failed to be the light when there was time. Now all that is left is to warn of sudden distraction because we failed to fulfill the obedience to Christ all these years.
It is our responsibility to warn and judge as the Lord judges our brethren who proclaim Christ if they are acting in sin (1 Cor. 5) and to warn those who are outside of the great and terrible Day of the Lord; knowing the terror of the Lord, we are to persuade all men.
The truth is we have a huge problem. Sin in the camp that is going undealt with and not warning and exhorting those on the outside of the wrath to come when all men will be judged by Jesus for their words and deeds done in the body.
We need to obey God. There will be hope for anyone until we do what He told us to do. Read the book of Acts and do what they did. They did not sit in churches singing songs. They went out into the cities and proclaimed the Risen Christ who reigns in heaven and who is coming soon to judge every person. They were willing to die for their faith. Where are the Christian’s like that in this nation?
Our forefathers died so that we could have freedom to gather in the name of Jesus without persecution. Where are the ones who are courageous enough, have faith enough, have love enough to just go do what He said do.
Why don’t we for the next 40 days take the words of Jesus in the love of Christ and the urgency of the times to the streets of our cities instead of staying in our safe little huddles in the buildings.Go be the Church of Jesus!!! And compel them to come out of Babylon and touch not the unclean thing and come into the presence of Christ Jesus who is Lord of every person. (Don’t go anywhere until you have power from on high though. If you go without the power of the Spirit upon you, you will make a mess. Go when you know you have the power of the Spirit. Wait for Him to come and then be sent out in His power to proclaim Christ Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection!!!)
For the sake of Jesus Christ go and do something courageous for Him.

An interesting fact: about the time Jonah went into Nineveh: there was a total solar eclipse. (The great Syrian eclipse). Historically, the Jews read Jonah on a regular basis, and knew it from the perspective of the sign of darkness before judgment. This harkened back to the plagues/signs given to pharaoh.

The Bur-Sagale eclipse occurred over the Assyrian capital city of Nineveh in the middle of the reign of Jeroboam II, who ruled Israel from 786 to 746 B.C. According to 2 Kings 14:25, the prophet Jonah lived and prophesied in Jeroboam’s reign. The biblical scholar Donald Wiseman has speculated that the eclipse took place around when Jonah arrived in Nineveh and urged the people to repent, otherwise the city would be destroyed. This would explain the dramatic repentance of the people of Nineveh as described in the Book of Jonah. What slays me is that today in churches across America most pastors will make no mention of the “Eclipse” in their messages to the flock gathered there! This subject is on the minds of millions of Americans, but there will be no guidance for the flock! Father forgive them for they know not what they do! Let’s pray for our pastors!

With the many points of view regarding this eclipse event the major importance to me is to be in tune with Lord God Almighty and do what is good and proper for the sake of imparting a message from above to others around. We must tell everyone we know, and this will be a great tool, so that people are not in the dark about what is coming on the earth, and so good to know that God actually will hear our prayers and hold back his wrath and give us time to reach as many as possible Before His coming ‘
I’ve been proclaiming we are living in the time of Isaiah 60: 1-3 for quite a few years now, the positive take away is to look for the glory of the Lord to rise upon His people, and what is the glory of the Lord? see Exodus 33:18-19 where Moses asked the Lord to show him His glory, it is not only His radiant glory.
A couple months ago God spoke to my daughter 3 foreign words. She looked them up phonetically on a search engine. They were all in Arabic. The first word is used my Muslims when they establish Islam over a nation. The second refers to plots & scheming. The third word was, “eclipse.” We consider this a warning that Muslims are likely to start a war in the USA on that date. I have much more intelligence on this to back it up, but my schedule requires me to stop just now. I wish my life could slow down more at times.

Yet, I am troubled by the news and all that is going on in America and around the world. My husband and I both have some serious illnesses. Our retirement funds are all being used up more quickly than planned due to our economy. Lately, I feel ready to meet our Lord. I am ready to move on. I only hope that my husband goes first since he needs me for his health issues. Our kids are so busy, not much time for us. Yet, I know these thoughts should not be my focus. I try to get it out of my mind, yet it returns again. I have never felt this way before, but I wonder if God is preparing me. Any thoughts? I am not overly depressed, just ready.

We all are as this wicked world we live in has nothing to offer anyone. Just keep in Faith everything will be alright Trust in the LORD. You and your husband keep praying and read your BIBLE everyday. Ask the LORD to show you something He wants you to see. Pray and open up your BIBLE he will show you what He wants you to read. This always works for me give it a shot. Also remember He says He will never leave you or forsake you. On that keep your Faith GOD LOVES YOU.

Take heart and keep re-focusing on the Lord, as much as you need to. Even though the Lord commands us not to be anxious or worry, I struggle with that. I just want Him to rapture us out of here already.
But we must occupy till He comes. But the waiting is not easy. No remotely sane person could avoid being bothered by the news that bombards us. All that the Lord told us would happen in the end times we are watching happen in front of our face. I know I have never experienced anything like it. Despite being old enough to experience the tail end of Vietnam, the 70’s energy crisis, the cold war, the Gulf War, 9/11 and subsequent war, etc. None of those things compare to what we are experiencing now & the nerve-wracking feelings it generates.
But our redemption draweth nigh! Hallelujah! I pray for you and your family, for this nation, for Israel, and the world, and pray that as many as possible will receive Lord Jesus as Savior before the great & glorious day of His return.
And I am heartened by seeing quite a few people come to Jesus during Easter weekend. Such a blessing to see!
Let us hold fast, pray and be in the Word more than ever before! Our God reigns.
Rest in His Word, letting it revolve round your heart and mind, meditating on it. Release all your worries to Him for He careth for you. John 15:7,8 “If you dwell in me, and my words dwell in you, ask what you will, and you shall have it.”
I pray for you both that His peace, which is better than the world can give, will fill you and bring you joy. I also pray that your children will see that your need now is for them at least to keep regular contact.
May Jesus hold you and your husband in His arms and give you peace. May Jesus provide for ALL your needs according to His riches in Heaven.

Jesus is coming. Listen for the horn. This is another sign that’s gets us closer to the rapture. I praise the Lord. A 40 day fast is definitely what Gods children should do. And to be bold, especially on the day of the eclipse, is needed. We must get right with God NOW!!!

I accept the “what if” challenge to fast and pray in the 40 day window between April 8th and May 18th. Like Nineveh of old, we have everything to gain by choosing to repent corporately and EVERYTHING to lose if we don’t! God wants to relent but needs the cooperation of His remnant!

While I am not opposed to a season of prayer and fasting I must call attention to one sentence in this article that can bring confusion and error.
In Romans 12 the apostle Paul teaches us about appropriate behavior for those of us who have committed our lives to Jesus. He lists behavior becoming of a person who lives for Him, not behavior that cleanses us.
When we are washed in the blood of the Lamb His righteousness is imputed to us and positionally we are perfect before the Lord.
According to Ephesians 5 He (Jesus) presents us to Himself as a spotless bride. He does the work that only He can do for we are not equipped to make ourselves spotless.
“What if this is the beginning of the process that helps actually make us spotless?”
Questioning if this helps make us spotless is questioning the finished work of Jesus on the cross!
We can encourage people to fast and pray as they are called to by Holy Spirit, but we dare not equate obtaining any part of our spotless secure “position” in Christ with our “performance” of Christian disciplines.

Lord… Your timing for everything under the sun is perfect. Let us continue to put our trust in that and in You. Whatever the outcome with this solar eclipse, help us to continuously prepare our hearts, souls, and minds and incline them towards You, for You are the Gatekeeper in all things. Panic is not of You, but peace is. And in that, we find rest and solace which only You can provide. We trust You, love You, and are preparing the table for Your Second Coming… whenever that may be. I won’t go into details, but when I woke up I felt horrible-felt dirty-just like you describe the status of our nation. And then I read this article. Father I pray that people will listen and instead of bickering over semantics they will understand the concept and our focus and prayers will be returned to you. Help us not be as they were in Hosea 4:6 where your people were destroyed for lack of knowledge. I humble myself before you Lord, declaring your glory and power asking you to heal our land. I plan to be on my knees praying that day for your will to be done. I am, as is Karla and her team, praying that others will use this event and time to acknowledge you, return to you, declare your glory and be ready for your soon return. Thank you for the article, Karla. Like Esther, I have read the in depth treatise about the eclipse on skyscroll.org which points out that there are only 2 Ninevehs in the PoT. It sheds light on several other facts that are worthy of reading about this historical event from a Christian perspective. We should pray.
USA Today did a fact check on the claim that the total eclipse will pass through 7 cities named Ninevah, and found it to be incorrect. They are right about the cities named Nineveh, but I wouldn’t trust the left-leaning USA Today for my news. Try the Epoch Times. Much more conservative.
