From the Daily Wire:

The Texas House approved a new congressional map on Wednesday that is expected to net Republicans five additional seats in the House of Representatives after the upcoming midterm elections.

The map, which passed with all 88 Republican House members voting in favor, caps a weeks-long saga in which dozens of Democratic lawmakers fled the state to prevent the state legislature from conducting business. The new map will head to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk for a final signature.

Rogue Democrats returned to Texas earlier this week, ending their protest after collectively racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for purposely breaking quorum and leaving the state legislature unable to conduct business.

As the Daily Wire mentions, this vote follows weeks of chaos in Texas. Democrats initially fled the state, leaving the House without the minimum number of representatives required to conduct business. Although Texas Democrats returned, they did not abandon their will to fight. The representatives seem intent on combating the new map in court.

Texas Republicans also recently passed new rules to prevent Democrats from fleeing again, mandating that those “who fled must receive passes to leave the House chamber,” and that they must be assigned a Texas Department of Public Safety officer to ensure they return to the chamber ahead of each session. The Daily Wire reports that some Democrats took issue with these new rules, staying in the House chamber overnight to protest.

Meanwhile, Texas’ redistricting fiasco has started a nationwide shifting of congressional districts. Some red states are following in Texas’ footsteps, while some blue states, most notably California, as redistricting to push out Republican seats.

As states pursue their own redistricting strategies, let’s pray. Let’s pray for Texas’ new map to stand, and let’s continue to pray for free, fair, and secure elections across America.
