A shocking act of violence disrupted what was meant to be a celebratory evening in Washington, D.C., as gunfire erupted during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In the chaos, the reactions of those present revealed something deeper about leadership, instinct, and character.

Have you taken your place on the wall?

From the Daily Wire:

What began as a glittering evening at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner ended in chaos Saturday night when gunfire shattered the calm in the ballroom and sent journalists, officials, and their spouses scrambling for safety. According to reporting, the suspect, identified as Cole Allen, later admitted he had been targeting Trump administration officials. In an instant, the glitz of the night became irrelevant, and instincts took over. When there is no time for calculation, no time for messaging or spin, what you see is character — unfiltered and immediate.

When the first shots rang out, White House adviser Stephen Miller reacted without hesitation. He immediately moved his wife, Katie — pregnant with their fourth child — down beneath him and covered her with his body, placing himself between her and the direction of the gunfire. Video shows that as they were evacuated, he remained close behind her, steadying her and guiding her forward. In the hours that followed, critics on social media attempted to twist the scene, falsely accusing him of using her as a shield. The shots came from behind him, and his body position reflected that reality. His instinct was not to hide; it was to protect.

Nearby, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth responded with similar decisiveness. As everyone around him hid under tables, he stood to assess the situation, physically placing himself between danger and his wife, Jenny. When agents moved to evacuate the room, he cleared a path, pushing aside chairs and obstacles with a flick of his hand, and ensured that she moved ahead of him toward safety.

In moments like these, the true nature of leadership is revealed—not in speeches or policy positions, but in instinctive action. When danger strikes, there is no time for calculation or image management. What emerges is the heart posture of those involved. The reactions described in this account point to a willingness among some leaders to step into danger for the sake of others, reflecting a mindset of protection and responsibility.

This event also raises broader questions about the kind of leadership our nation values. Strength, courage, and self-sacrifice are not merely cultural ideals—they are deeply biblical principles. Scripture repeatedly calls men to lay down their lives for others, to protect the vulnerable, and to lead with humility and courage. In a culture that often challenges or redefines these values, moments like this remind us that such instincts are not only real, but necessary.

Ultimately, this incident serves as both a warning and a call to prayer. We must pray for protection over our leaders and their families, and for a restoration of godly character in positions of influence. The actions taken in moments of crisis matter—and they reveal the kind of nation we are becoming.

I thank the Lord Almighty along with our decisive cabinet leaders for protecting the room. Thanks also to the Secret Service agents who, literally lifted VP Vance from his chair to guide him to safety! Praise God for Stephen Miller also. Let this be a lesson to the legacy news media to stop spewing hate and division by “their words” – we will be judged by our words – We better watch our step!! In Jesus Name!

As I looked at the picture of Steven Miller and his wife being taken to safety, I wondered why someone thought he was using her as a shield. The secret service was behind them and so was the gunfire. I am so thankful for these brave men who shielded their wives. May God protect our leaders and their families.

Yes, we need men (and women) with godly values to act without hesitation in the face of immediate danger. Women, children, the elderly and those most vulnerable must be protected and sheltered as necessary. We are living in a culture with many unhinged people living in the shadows, whether they’re mentally ill and/or just plain evil. I pray that they may obtain the help they need but that they may be stopped from committing violence if that is their goal. I pray for our president and his family as well as for his administration. May we elect godly men and women with character and courage!
