Despite rampant conflict in their party, Democrats managed to join Republicans to pass a spending bill last night, averting a government shutdown.

From Fox News. A government shutdown was averted just hours before the Friday 11:59 p.m. deadline after enough Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., helped RepublicansĀ defeat the filibuster.

Senators voted 54-46 to pass the stopgap spending bill, which only needed 51 votes to be approved. Nearly all Republicans backed the measure, with only Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., opposing. All Democrats opposed it, with the exception of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H. Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with the Democrats, also voted to pass the bill. …

House RepublicansĀ passed the short-term bill, called a continuing resolution, earlier in the week. The bill will keep spending levels the same as fiscal year (FY) 2024 until Oct. 1. …

The Friday evening vote to pass the six-month CR came after a critical procedural vote earlier in the afternoon. A handful of Senate Democrats provided the Republican majority with the necessary votes to overcome the filibuster and move forward with the stopgap spending bill.

Deep divisions emerged within the Democratic Party over the past couple of days, with even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., refusing to answer questions about whether he had confidence in Schumer. …

It may look like a good thing, but if you look at it, we gained nothing; the spending bill remained the same. Our deit did not come down not one penny!!!! We should have played hard ball like the Democrats do, they would have caved in.

Thank you, Lord for your intercession in the seemingly unfathomable gap that presents itself in the governing of our nation. Give us the faith in you, the patience, the understanding and the resolve to accept “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”

So true Larry !! Math is math and our current system of spending canā€™t go on forever. Itā€™s as simple as one plus one equals two. Only God our Father can reconstruct Americas fiscal responsibility. Father please let Your hand rest on our government leaders to create a sustainable budget !! In Jesus name we believe!!
    Amen and Hallelujah !!

Lord, when we stand before Your judgment seat, we will not stand before You as part of any group – religious, social, political, familial, etc.. We will stand before You as individuals, who must give an answer for our individual choices in this life – no finger pointing or blame shifting. The way we come into Godly unity is not by agreeing with any group – religious, social, political, familial, etc. It is by coming into alignment with You, with Your will and purposes, with the Truth of Your Holy Word – as individuals. That is what brings believers into Godly unity, not human agreement and compromise. May each of us begin taking personal responsibility for our own choices, and refuse the temptation to succumb to “group think”. If we know You, You have given us Holy Spirit to indwell us and “lead us into all Truth” – we can trust You. Please break the power of “group think”, break ungodly ties within our societal organizations, break down any covenants with death, break down ideologies that exalt themselves against the knowledge of YHVH, break down evil constructs of every sort. Then out of the rubble raise up Your church, and build her as You alone can – placing us as spiritual stones where You desire us to be in relationship with You and with one another.

These are the thoughts and prayers that arose when I was giving thanks for the passage of this spending bill, and thanks for the “deep divisions that arose” among the Democrats that helped to accomplish it. “Group think” is dangerous.

That is great the budget bill passed. I thought it needed 60 votes to pass not 54.

    Will:

60 votes were needed to invoke cloture, the parliamentary procedure that was used to end possible filibuster
(i.e., prolonged speechmaking) intended to obstruct passage of the Continuing Resolution which only
required a majority vote of 51 for passage.

Itā€™s a start, but falls far short of the budget cutting that actually needs to happen. Iā€™ll be happier when they stop funding Planned Parenthood.

We prayed fervently, and clearly understood the negative repercussions if the bill didn’t pass. It was smart and necessary for this time, We pray for God’s mercy and wisdom for our leadership in the executive & legislative branches; we pray against the political activism of many judges in the judicial branch .In Jesus. Name, Amen
