Last year, we saw the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) identify countless ways in which our federal government was wasting money, leading to cuts and changes codified by Republican lawmakers. Recently, however, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to undo these cuts and even add additional funding.

Schumer made the comments when he was asked Thursday if he would work to replenish funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) at a forum held by the Center for American Progress.

“If you look at the budget we’re working on right now, we restore most of the cuts. And even go higher than previous years on many of the programs that DOGE slashed,” Schumer said.

“We have worked really hard and gotten bipartisan support to increase these amounts and undo a lot of the cuts which are essential.”

The Minority Leader did not specify which programs he wanted to restore funding to, though Fox notes that lawmakers have yet to release a final text for the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development bill for 2026. The Senate Appropriations Committee has reportedly proposed a plan that would increase the budget for fiscal year 2026 by $5 billion compared to 2025.

According to the DOGE website, the group believes it has exposed saved Americans an estimated $215 billion by identifying and cutting waste. Republicans last year passed a bill that codified $115 billion of those spending reductions. And although a subsequent recessions package has not yet materialized, Representative Aaron Bean, chairman of the House DOGE Caucus, insists that cost-cutting efforts are still ongoing in the background.
