Recently, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent letters to sanctuary jurisdictions around the country, demanding they cooperate with federal law and immigration enforcement. In response to these letters, however, many mayors and governors are choosing to openly defy the Trump administration.

Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, sent Bondi a response letter in which he wrote, “You are hereby notified that Washington State will not be bullied or intimidated by threats and legally baseless accusations.”

In his response to Bondi, which was shared with Fox News Digital, Ferguson wrote that “our state legislature passed a bipartisan law that appropriately and lawfully limits the diversion of our state and local resources to federal immigration enforcement.” He also ripped into Bondi personally, writing that her “threat to criminally prosecute state officials embarrasses and disgraces the office.”

“Washington State is proud to be a welcoming community that values immigrants’ and refugees’ contributions to our economy and our cultural fabric. We do so while accounting for and complying with applicable federal law,” he claimed.

Washington is not alone. According to Fox, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker all took similar defiant tones. These leaders all denied disregarding the law, with some even confidently daring the Attorney General to follow through on her threats.

Attorney General Bondi announced last Thursday that she had sent letters to 32 mayors and 7 governors, telling them to comply with federal immigration laws within a week or face DOJ action. In the letter she sent to Governor Newsom, the Attorney General suggested that leaders may even face criminal charges. A week has passed since the original announcement and, despite threats, the jurisdictions don’t seem eager to comply with the Trump administration.

As these states continue to battle the Trump administration, let’s go to God in prayer. Let’s pray for an end to harmful sanctuary policies, and let’s pray for federal law and immigration enforcement as they work to keep us safe!
