Russian Airliner down in Egypt–ISIS takes responsibility
224 passengers and crew perished in a Russian airliner, downed over Sinai, Egypt. Even though there is no evidence as of yet to what or who the cause of the crash, representatives from ISIS are taking credit. Some report that the altitude the plane was flying at, at the time of the crash is too high for a surface to air missile, but it is not disputed that ISIS does posses surface to air missiles in its arsenal. The investigation is jointly being conducted by Russian and Egyptian authorities.
The Daily Beast reports:
ISIS released photos of the missile as part of a series of grotesque photos showing dead Egyptian soldiers the group said it killed over the weekend. The photo of the missile is blurry but could be a second- or third-generation Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPAD), said Matt Schroeder, senior researcher at Geneva-based Small Arms Survey.
