The nation’s health agency is taking a formal look at a technology most Americans interact with dozens of times a day and rarely think twice about. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced this week that the Department of Health and Human Services is examining electromagnetic fields and wireless radiation, opening the door for scientists, industry, and everyday Americans to weigh in on what the current evidence actually shows.

The move touches nearly every corner of modern life, from cell phones and Wi-Fi routers to the wireless infrastructure built into schools and homes. For years, questions about long-term exposure to this technology have simmered on the margins of public health debate. Kennedy’s announcement pulls those questions into the open, with a stated goal of producing science-based recommendations for families and schools rather than leaving parents to sort through competing claims on their own.

The department issued a request for researchers and others to provide input on the impact of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure, including radiation from radiofrequencies, as it works to figure out the current evidence base and craft recommendations for schools and families.

Concern about the potential health effects of the exposure “has increased, particularly in relation to children, schools, and long-term cumulative exposure,” Kennedy wrote in the document. “At the same time, scientific literature is extensive, technically complex, and not always easy for policymakers or public health stakeholders to interpret.”

Evidence submitted by the public can include peer-reviewed studies, government reports, and industry data, he said. Individuals can also share experiences of health effects they believe may be associated with exposure to EMFs. They should outline the types of technology involved, the nature and duration of the exposure, the health effects, and any treatment that was sought.

The public comment period opens Sept. 21 and will remain open for 30 days, giving researchers, industry representatives, and ordinary citizens a formal channel to submit information directly to the agency shaping future policy.

Kennedy’s interest in this issue predates his role at HHS. As a lawyer, he was involved in litigation against the Federal Communications Commission that led to a 2021 ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The court found the FCC acted arbitrarily and capriciously by keeping 1996-era wireless radiation limits in place without providing a reasoned explanation for why those guidelines adequately protected the public from radiofrequency radiation’s noncancer effects. The court ordered the agency to properly review the health evidence. Children’s Health Defense, an organization Kennedy once chaired, recently filed a new case arguing the FCC has failed to comply with that order, and the agency has until later this month to respond. The FCC’s website currently states that no scientific evidence establishes a definitive link between wireless device use and cancer or other illnesses.

Speaking at a Washington conference Thursday, Kennedy said the original court filings that led to the 2021 ruling included more than 10,000 studies, but he argued significant gaps in knowledge remain. He said HHS is reviewing the broader regulatory landscape and plans to release a report this fall that will incorporate evidence submitted through the new public comment process.

Scripture calls believers to walk in wisdom and to test what is presented as settled truth, especially when it concerns the health and safety of children (Proverbs 18:15; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). Technology has advanced far faster than most families have been able to evaluate its long-term effects, and a government willing to revisit old assumptions with fresh evidence reflects good stewardship rather than alarmism. Parents bear the responsibility of protecting their children’s bodies, which scripture calls temples entrusted to their care (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and that responsibility is made easier when public institutions pursue honest answers rather than settled talking points. Christians should pray for researchers and officials involved in this review, that they would pursue truth over political or financial pressure, and for families navigating daily decisions about technology in their homes and schools.
