In April 2026, the nation rejoiced at the remarkable rescue of a U.S. airman who had been forced to eject from an F-15 over Iran. Alone in enemy territory and facing the very real possibility of capture, the Air Force colonel managed to evade Iranian forces long enough to activate his emergency transponder and transmit a signal that rescuers could use to locate him.

But along with that signal came a message – just three simple words that revealed where his confidence rested in the midst of an extraordinary crisis: “God is good.”

Bravo Shares More Details

Since the amazing rescue, more details have emerged about the weapons systems officer, known by his call sign “Bravo,” and the harrowing experience that he terms “miraculous.” The aviator who credits his survival to God, appeared on 60 Minutes recently, candidly sharing about the ordeal that tested him physically and spiritually – and ultimately left him convinced that God’s hand had been upon him every step of the way.

“It’s hard to describe the depth of my gratitude, not just for those who came to get me, but for the millions of Americans that were supporting them,” Bravo told host Norah O’Donnell.

To understand the depth of that gratitude, one has to go back to the terrifying moments when his ordeal began.

Bravo recounted what happened that night when he and the pilot of the F-15, known by the call sign “Alpha,” were struck by an Iranian missile and forced to eject. The two airmen came down miles apart in a mountainous desert region deep inside Iran.

“I think the best way I’ve been able to describe that moment was getting hit by a freight train,” Bravo recalled. “Soon thereafter we ejected and found ourselves floating over the heart of Iran.”

But Bravo’s ordeal was only beginning. As he descended through the darkness, he realized his parachute had been damaged. “At one point when I looked up and saw no parachute – it was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen.”

Lord, I Need Your Help

Bravo was suddenly in free fall, but as he plummeted toward the ground at an estimated 70-100 miles per hour, he turned to God. Rather than surrendering to panic, he prayed: “Lord, Your will be done, but if I’m getting through this, I need Your help.”

A Modern-Day Miracle

Somehow, Bravo survived the impact. He broke his back, arm, and shoulder, sprained his ankle, and suffered cuts to his head and face. His injuries were serious, but remarkably, none incapacitated him. For Bravo, there was no question that God had protected him in those terrifying moments.

“I believe that it’s a testament to God’s provision in my life to bring me through that moment in a way that didn’t prevent injuries, but prevented any catastrophic injuries that would’ve affected my ability to survive. And I’m grateful eternally for knowing that He was there with me,” declared Bravo.

Looking back on what he survived that night, Bravo described it simply as “a modern-day miracle.”

Bravo’s conviction that God had intervened in his survival prompted the host, Norah O’Donnell, to ask the question that seemed impossible to ignore: “Because you don’t see any other explanation for how you survived?”

Bravo answered, “I don’t think there can be, and I think the facts around my survival – the facts proven out by my medical records, the facts proven out by the equipment that was still there – I think they all determined that that was true.”

But surviving the fall was only part of the miracle. Despite his broken bones and other injuries, Bravo was still able to move his body and immediately began searching for a place to hide from Iranian forces. Fighting through intense pain, he hiked and climbed toward a 7,000-foot mountain ridgeline, knowing that his best chance of survival was to get to higher ground.

Eventually, he found refuge inside a crevice among the rocks. Armed groups were searching the surrounding area, and a bounty had reportedly been placed on his head, giving them even greater incentive to find him. Hidden in the mountains and unable to know how close his pursuers might be, Bravo once again turned to God, praying that those searching for him would not discover his location.

Once concealed, Bravo began working towards communication. Though his crew mate Alpha had already been rescued six hours into the ordeal, Bravo would have to brave the danger much longer. After some time, however, he finally made contact with the military. His first message was, “I’m hurt. I’m moving. God is good.”

Bravo later explained, “When I got to the moment where I could review and think about all that I’d gone through, I sent ‘God is good’ as a recognition of all that He had brought me through, surviving the impact of the Iranian weapon, surviving my impact to the ground, and successfully evading people that were actively looking for me,” he recalled. “I could only think of that as miraculous.”

Faith Over Fear

Looking back, Bravo understood that his survival involved more than the years of preparation and training that had equipped him for such a crisis. His faith had been just as crucial in those mountains, giving him something his military training alone could not provide.

Bravo emphasized, “I don’t have this story without faith. I’m not saying faith is a replacement for training, but instead it is a boon to training. Training helps us understand what we do, but faith is the backstop of all of my actions during my time in Iran and the way that guides what I do day in and day out.”

That faith would continue to sustain him as the hours stretched on. Even after establishing communication, Bravo still had another long day ahead of him in the harsh, desert-like terrain with very little food or water. Yet he refused to give up. Hope became a lifeline – something he held tightly to as he waited for rescue.

“I knew that they were going to come. I knew that America, whether it was one day or one year, was going to uphold its promise and rescue me. I had to do my part to give them time to affect that rescue,” he said.

And rescue did come. Nearly 50 hours after his F-15 was shot down, U.S. forces launched a daring mission deep into Iran to bring Bravo home. Small “Little Bird” helicopters flew toward the mountainous ridgeline where Air Force pararescue operators, known as PJs, reached the wounded airman.

“The moment a PJ showed up to me on that ridgeline was one of the greatest moments of my life,” Bravo recalled.

And as the sun rose on Easter Sunday, the extraordinary rescue was complete. For Bravo, the significance of that morning went far beyond his physical rescue. After everything he had endured, he emerged with an even deeper conviction that faith had been an essential part of his journey – and that God had been with him through it all.

The Promises of Psalm 91

Bravo’s story is inspiring, but it also brings to life many of the promises found in Psalm 91. Verse 1 declares that the one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will “abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” From the moment his parachute failed to the long hours he spent wounded and alone in enemy territory, Bravo continued to place his trust in the Lord. His circumstances were life-threatening, but his confidence remained anchored in knowing that Jesus dwelled with him.

Verse 5 says, “You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day.” Bravo encountered both – the danger of enemy weapons and the terror of being hunted through the darkness – yet he continued to pray and cling to God. Hidden among the rocks of the Iranian mountainside, wounded and surrounded by danger, he found a refuge far greater than the crevice that concealed him. He found refuge beneath the wings of the Almighty.

And what about the promise of verse 11? “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Did God dispatch His angels to watch over Bravo during those desperate hours? It’s very likely because Bravo himself recognized that his survival was a miracle! Despite a damaged parachute, a devastating fall, serious injuries, and nearly 50 hours behind enemy lines, his life was preserved.

The last two verses of Psalm 91 beautifully sum up Bravo’s extraordinary experience: “When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation,” Psalm 91:15-16.

Intercessors, never doubt what Almighty God can do. This time, His power was displayed in the desert of Iran, but next time, it could be in our nation, in your community, or even in your own life. Whatever the circumstances may be, remember the words Bravo declared in the midst of his ordeal: “God is good!”

Lord Jesus, thank you for miracles. Truly, nothing is too big for Your strong arm to save! We pray for continual protection around our armed forces, and all those who serve our nation. When we find ourselves in trouble, help us to dwell beneath Your shadow, trust in Your promises, and always remember that You are good.
