As the national guard and federal law enforcement continue to clean up Washington, D.C., Republicans in Congress are reportedly working to craft a crime bill to complement and accompany President Trump’s crime crackdown.

Exactly what the bill will include is unclear, but it’s expected to take aim at issues such as cashless bail, which Trump has blamed for crime.

A crime bill was not on the agenda when lawmakers exited Washington for a long August recess, but Trump has scrambled the priority list with his summer focus on crime.

Senate Republican aides say that while both Thune and Johnson have been in contact with Trump, they expect the House to take the lead on the crime bill.

Though this legislation seems to be still in its earliest stages, President Trump posted on Truth Social that House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are working with him on creating “a Comprehensive Crime Bill.”

This House is expected to take the lead on crafting this legislation, likely because of the uphill battle it will face in the Senate. Since Senate bills need 60 votes to pass, Republicans would, assuming all GOP lawmakers vote for it, have to earn the favor of at least seven Democrats to pass crime legislation.

The Hill notes that Congress will also need to act to preserve the President’s control of D.C., which is set to expire on September 10. This also seems difficult, as the majority of Democrats are strongly opposed to President Trump’s takeover of the nation’s capital. One Republican lawmaker, Senator Mike Lee, is even pushing to federalize D.C. permanently through the BOWSER Act.

As Republicans work to craft legislation opposing crime, let’s pray. Let’s pray for a bill that will be responsible, affordable, and that will make our nation safer!
