According to a recent inspector general report, the Secret Service’s counter sniper team is understaffed. This troubling fact means the Secret Service may be unable to properly respond to attacks or assassination attempts on our leaders.

The Department of Homeland Security Inspector General determined that the Secret Service’s counter sniper team is staffed 73% below the level necessary to meet mission requirements and does not have an adequate pipeline to hire more.

Meanwhile, demand for snipers is up. Events the sniper team supported increased by 151% from calendar year 2020 to 2024, even though staffing only increased 5% over that span, according to the report.
As a result, the watchdog recommended that the agency execute a plan to beef up staffing to meet the counter sniper staffing requirements. The Secret Service concurred, per the report.
In a statement to Fox, the Secret Service said it agreed with the report and was working to hire more counter snipers.
This comes after President Trump faced two assassination attempts while running for the presidency last year. In the first incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, the then-former President nearly lost his life. The gunman who shot at the President was eventually dispatched, but he could have very well killed President Trump if there were less counter snipers on the scene.
In the wake of the assassination attempt in Butler, the Secret Service vowed to implement a series of reforms and, since the attack and this year’s inauguration, the agency has gone through several changes, including changes in leadership. Its counter sniper team, however, still seems to be lacking.
With this new information, let’s pray for the Secret Service. Let’s ask the Lord to raise up more counter snipers so that our leaders can remain safe!
