Rags-to-Riches: How Prayer Changed Mississippi’s Economy
Recently on “Huckabee Today,” political commentator Mike Huckabee and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves highlighted how Mississippi’s unemployment is the lowest in its history at 2.7 percent–better than the national average.

Governor Reeves credits the state’s significant investment in site development (making sites available for companies wishing to relocate to Mississippi) and the state’s commitment to invest in people through workforce development. But IFA Mississippi state prayer leaders Dexter and Sheryl Washington give full credit to the faithful intercessors who meet weekly on their state prayer call.
“Mississippi’s economy is always one of the main prayer points because our state leads the nation with families in poverty,” say the Washingtons. They rejoice that the report on “Huckabee Today” is a huge testament to their ongoing prayers, recognizing that their state’s economically improved position brings glory to God.
One of the largest capital investments in the state’s history (10 billion dollars) is happening in Madison County, Mississippi. And while other states shut down during COVID-19, Mississippi stayed open for business, showing that Mississippians “honor a hard day’s work and a hard day’s pay,” says Governor Reeves.
Mississippi also conducted significant education reforms since 2012, instituting the “third-grade gate.” If students did not know how to read by the third grade, they were not promoted to the fourth grade. Mississippi’s goal is for students to be reading to learn–instead of learning to read–by the fourth grade.
Despite the predictions that the program would never work, Mississippi fourth-grade readers went from the 49th best in America to the 21st best. Mississippi’s African American fourth-grade readers scored 5th best in America. Additionally, in fourth-grade math, students moved from 50th best to 23rd best. Governor Reeves says he tells future employers that Mississippi will have the smartest workforce in 10 years.
Meanwhile, IFA Mississippi intercessors are recharged by this news. God is on the move and no state is beyond His ability to bring transformation!

I am not from Mississippi, but from Iowa and we are apart of a prayer team that is lifting your state up to the throne of God to remember you daily. May the LORD bless your state!
We rejoice with you, Mississippi – and we give all the glory to YHVH!! As a retired teacher, I took special joy in the education reforms that have resulted in wonderful improvements in the stats. I taught K, and most of my students were “reading to learn” by the end of that year. I’m glad that MS is not selling their students short, but holding a higher standard of achievement. Lord, please grant educators in MS the wisdom, discernment and effective teaching strategies to enable their students to thrive. You delight in blessing Your children!
Praise God!
