God Gets the Last Word at the Olympics
Though there was much about the Olympics in Paris that broke the Father’s heart, His witness went forth through the many Christian athletes.
While I was in Le Villette — Parc des Nations (Nations Park) — in Paris, I felt prompted to pray for some of the Christian athletes in front of their national houses:
Hurdler Breaks World Record, Giving All Glory to God
I prayed for Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the video above. She astonished the world by breaking the world record in women’s 400m hurdles (she made it look easy!). At the press conference following her astonishing run, an NPR reporter asked her about her faith. Her response has gone viral, for good reason. Her description of the role of faith and Jesus in her life is a model for every believer.
Gold Medal Shot Put Winner Stuns with Praise to Jesus
Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany slipped and fell during her first shot put throw on the wet ground. She went back to her seat and sang a beautiful praise song to her self. She was asked about in a press conference and she sang the whole song here. You will not regret watching this video.
Ogunleye’s second attempt was a personal best for an indoor throw. Then, it was neck and neck with New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche. Both women threw personal bests, but Ogunleye was further at 20.oom, which was her goal. After she threw, she dropped to her knees in prayer when she saw the distance she had achieved.
God Calls Missionary to Olympics
In the video I mentioned Olympic rower, Emily Froehlich. She sensed the Lord calling her to lay down athletics and become a missionary. She turned down a spot on the U.S. national team to do so. But while she was serving the Lord in the Middle East she had a vision. She said: “In the vision He showed how there’s no other event where the nations come like the Olympics.”
Froehlich said she knew from the vision that “He wants to be glorified at this event. He’s looking for people to go to the Olympics and represent Jesus instead of their country. I said, ‘Yes, God! Pick me!’” When she sees Christian athletes proclaim their faith, she said, “It’s like seeing the vision — what God really wanted — coming to fruition.”
She said, “It takes more than one person to represent God in all the arenas and reach all the people.” She pointed out that while she has access to Team USA rowers, everyone can reach those around them.
Froehlich points out how challenging it is to be the one Christian on her team, but she takes advantage of every open door to share her faith in the Lord. She said, “We have the Light in us. Don’t put it under a basket.” She hopes her witness will mean that one day she’ll be praying with teammates.
Her strategy is to build relationships with her teammates, working hard as an athlete, establishing trust and respect. But she said:
The secret is that you pray about it. I pray for specific people that God has given me favor in their life, friendship in their life. And I cannot explain the rest. God always opens a door. And they ask questions or they get vulnerable. If someone gives me just one centimeter then I just share everything: Share the Gospel, share my testimony, and offer to pray.

Basketball Player Weeps During Anthem
Our last story is a bit different. You may remember Brittany Griner. In 2020, as a WNBA player, she advocated for the league to do away with the playing of the national anthem after the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. She once left the court during the playing of the anthem. Then, in 2022, she was jailed in Russia for 10 months for possession of hash oil. She was arrested just a few days before Russia invaded Ukraine. Finally, she was released in a prisoner swap.
As the national anthem played after Griner and the USA women’s basketball team won gold, Griner weeps, then must regain composure before interacting with her team. You can watch below. Our freedoms as Americans are an echo of freedom in Christ. Let’s thank God for Griner’s reaction and pray that Jesus reveals Himself to her if He hasn’t already.

Lord, may every athlete who bears Your beautiful name have courage to bear witness to what You’re doing in their lives. As they prepare for the next competitions, may they never get too busy to spend time in Your Word. Give them backbones of steel, to speak Your truths into a world ready to silence and reject them. We also pray for the Christian athletes gearing up for the Paralympics beginning August 28. Anoint them to shine brightly to those around them. May they be a picture of what You can do through a broken person in a fallen world.
Post your prayers for the Christian athletes you know of in the comments.
On our tour of Europe with my play about Eric Liddell and the rest of the Chariots of Fire story, which culminated during the Olympics, we reached people from at least 35 nations.
Rich Swingle has presented in 42 nations on six continents, mostly with his own one-man plays. He and his bride Joyce Swingle, another contributing writer for IFA, shared his one-man play about Eric Liddell, world-record breaker at Paris 1924 in Paris, 2024: www.BeyondTheChariots.com. This was so good. I enjoyed hearing the testimonies of these athletes. Thank You Lord that You are being glorified in their lives!
I pray that the athletes will continue to glorify the Lord on the platform that the Lord has given them. I pray that they will continue to be bold fo the Lord in Jesus name wherever they go.
Praise God 🙏🙌🙌🙌🙌
Ty Rich for the amazing testimonies!
Praise God for these young people who were not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
I was blessed in reading these stories.
If we don’t give God praise, even the very rocks will cry out in praise!
I immediately had a different thought when I saw the title, but nonetheless was happy with your post, as I always look for that in the big events in life where someone has struggled and come through it win or lose, but usually in winning. but my thought was different: When I saw the headline I thought someone came up with the same conclusion I did:
Given how the Opening Night presented all sorts of questions as to the intent of the organizers in their presentations that offended many Christians rightfully or not, the subtlety thereof was rectified in the closing song by the Finnish composer, Jean/John Sibelius, of his Finlandia symphony. It is a magnificent piece for the ages, but. a Christian dirge written by. a German Lutheran woman in the late 1700’s about the sadness of the lost of a loved one, urging peace and understanding to Believers that they will meet again because of the death and resurrection of the Savior. So, ironic in many ways: sorrow for a loss when victories are to be lauded at Olympics,, a German tune played at an iconic and historical event in France and giving peace to those who were so upset at the Opening presentation. The title in English is “Be Still My Soul” and the first line line is, Be Still My Soul,, the Lord is on thy side and another line says “,your Jesus can repay, from His own fullness, all pain take away.” Just sayin’, what goes around…..
Delmer,
We were flying home from Paris during the closing ceremonies, but friends in France shared a link. It’s still available over there. We watched it all and didn’t hear Finlandia. Was it a part of the opening ceremonies?
This is just sooo cool! The Lord will always have the last word!! Praise Him!
I’m sorry to say Griner only wept for her selt being emotional that she won! This country is in the trash thanks to the left – they need to find God, many put the American flag out and yet I’m sure ask God to help them when it’s convenient! I pray every nite that God let’s Trump win – he is the lawful leader. God Bless America and God please make those who have fallen believe again.
Teresa, did you personally speak with her about her emotions? H:OW do you KNOW how she “feels”. EACH of us is responsible for OUR OWN choices. God holds us INDIVIDUALLY responsible!!! NO MORE :”the Devil made me do it!!” as an excuse!!!
Thank you Lord, for Yemisi Ogunleye’s beautiful song and testimony! Thank you that she publicly sang and gave praise to You! You are worthy of our praise. Bless her Lord. Amen.
GOD Bless OUR Christian BROTHERS and SISTERS IN CHRIST !
Praise you Jesus! You are worthy and exalted in the life of Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and others at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Had the privilege to view the 400 m relay and 400 hurdle. After the race she graced so many of us with her words about her “husband being her Pastor.” What beautiful words coming forth from this athlete. Jesus you were honored and am grateful and her teammates were able to shine for YOU. All glory and honor goes to you, Sweet Jesus.
God has not forgotten the Olympics! Revisiting the 1924 Paris Olympics: the true story of Eric Liddell in the 1981 historical sports film “Chariots of Fire”.
Remember the note passed to Eric Liddell just before he ran in the 1924 Olympics in Paris?
1 Samuel 2:30. Therefore the Lord the God of Israel declares: ‘I promised that your family and the family of your ancestor should go in and out before me forever’; but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be treated with contempt.
God inspires us to do our best and gives us the spiritual edge beyond what human positive thinking can do alone! Liddell went on to defeat the favoured American athletes in the 400m race and won the Gold Medal! This stirring testimony reminds us of the power in God’s word for all activities in our lives!
There was a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Eric Liddell’s victory at Paris 1924 at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh on June 22. Everyone who attended was greeted by a student of Boroughmuir High School, a Christian school in Edinburgh. The teens shook each visitor’s hand and left a slip of paper with that verse on it.
That verse is also on a stained glass window in Morningside United Church in Edinburgh, where Liddell taught Sunday school and spoke on occasion: https://www.richdrama.com/blog/post/another-100th-anniversary

It is a real blessing to listen to these testimonies that bring glory to Jesus.
Praise the Lord!!! Thank you, Jesus.
it is a real blessing to listen to these testimonies !1
The only thing I watched was the recap of the inspirational in the Olympics. The offensive evil which went on during the opening and closing of the event (which signify where France lies) were nothing but distractions from the testimonies of these beautiful young people from all over the world who claim and KNOW Jesus is the answer. God Bless them all.
What about the Olympic surfer that was asked to take an image of Jesus off of his surfboard or get disqualified, he chose disqualification! Praise God!
We covered him earlier: https://ifapray.org/blog/faith-at-the-forefront-at-the-olympics
There was a meme going around saying that he chose not to compete, but he changed his mind.
We pray for God’s blessing on those Christian athletes that shared their faith in these dark times. Pray for God’s blessing on those women that were cheating out of medals by men pretending to be women!
Stenthen all who love You be strong in Thee
Yes, He always has the final word!! Thank You, Lord, for each and every athlete who used the Olympics platform to witness of You and Your saving power. Blessings upon them!! Please continue to use them to Your glory, and the furthering of Your Kingdom both in them and through them.
Praise God! He is ALWAYS on the move, even in an environment that seems to be dark and forlorn. Thank you, Jesus, for the stong and powerful witness of these obedient athletes.
Wow! The Christian athletes testimonies here so very much encouraged me this morning! It was a reminder to keep my eyes on Jesus and ask Him what He is doing or wants when things like the Olympic opening happened. He is not asleep and we should not become focused on the enemy! Acknowledge the enemy is there but keep your focus on only Jesus! Go for the Gold- the kingdom of God advancing!
Angela, you are correct. Sometimes the wickedness disturbs us so much, we focus more on them. Acknowledge it, pray against it and leave it with God. He already knew what they were going to do and gives us lessons and trials. Praise Him more. I’m not perfect either but I’m not going to take my time and energy on evil. We know our Savior! 🙏🏼❤️✡️✝️
Fastastic! VERY encouraging stories this week at the Olympics. Thanks for reporting this Great turnabout of God there!
These athletes, with Jesus’ help, demonstrate how to respond to those (the IOC) who attack their faith.
After the evil way the devil had the french start this spectacle it is just wonderful the faith and courage these young people have shown to the world. HALLELUJAH!
good morning!
amen, these athletes shine in the darkness!!! did you plan to include the links you referenced in this article? i didn’t see any…
