Haitian president Jovenel Moïse was assassinated on Tuesday night in an attack on his home, the nation’s prime minister announced.

First lady Martine Moïse was hospitalized for gunshot wounds she received in the attack. Unidentified gunmen broke into the president’s residence on the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince during the night and opened fire on the couple.

“A group of unidentified individuals, some of them speaking Spanish, attacked the private residence of the president of the republic and thus fatally wounded the head of state,” Prime Minister Claude Joseph said in a statement. “The country’s security situation is under the control of the Haitian police and the armed forces of Haiti. . . . Democracy and the republic will win.”

Moïse has ruled by fiat for the past two years after Haiti failed to hold elections and the parliament dissolved. Meanwhile, a new prime minister, Dr. Ariel Henry, was scheduled to be sworn in on Wednesday.

Opposition figures said Moïse should have stepped down on February 7 of this year to complete a five-year term, and after Moïse refused to leave office thousands of Haitians protested in the streets. The government responded by arresting 23 people, including a senior judge and police official, whom Moïse accused of conspiring to assassinate him.

At Band of Brothers this morning, my husband heard a speaker whom the Lord had sent to Haiti to planting churches (one in every “department”, that is, district or state). He has the Haitian government’s permission to go in and evangelize in all these areas. He preaches through loudspeakers on his truck and gives out copies of the Gospel of John with Romans. About a week ago, the presidential motorcade came toward him down the other side of the street. Just as the President’s car came alongside the evangelist’s truck, the driver in the car behind the truck swerved over the line and blocked the motorcade. Then the driver just sat there, like he was catatonic, even after being commanded to move out of the way. During this stalemate, the evangelist preached the gospel to the president! AND one of the president’s men came up to him and asked for a Bible. The evangelist gave him the gospel of John and Romans and saw the man hand it through the window to the president. At that moment the guy in the car blocking the motorcade just drove away. As the motorcade moved on, the evangelist saw the president thumbing through the Bible! Yesterday, a week after this event, the president was assassinated! Lord willing, he had a chance to read and believe the gospel before he died.

Heavenly Father, I pray for Haiti and it’s people. Please heal their broken hearts and I pray that the person responsible for this would be apprehended and may justice be served. I pray that You would turn for good what the enemy meant for evil. May Your blessings be poured out on the Haitian people. In Jesus name and authority I pray, amen.
