Which way will the new Pope lean?
Within 15 to 20 days after Pope Francis’ death, the Vatican will begin the historic process of choosing from the papabile Cardinals the one who will succeed Pope Francis’ as the 267th Pope. The conclave is set to begin as on May 7. Of the 252 cardinals, only 135 are electors as all cardinals over the age of 80 are excluded from voting.

Although the voting cardinals look for a leader who is deeply spiritual and charismatic. He must have a vibrant vision for the church that includes a global perspective. All of those qualities could be suspended as it is the ultimate goal for the cardinals to hear and heed the voice of the Holy Spirit in the selection process.
The Catholic Church has experienced tremendous growth over the past four years, expanding their membership from 1.39 billion to 1.406 billion, making the Pope one of the most influential leaders in all Christendom. What the pope says and does matters to a large number of believers.
How can we all pray about this transition? Although many reading this may not be Catholic, the direction of the Catholic Church impacts conservative legislation and the election and implementation of biblical values. While we saw a drift toward more progressive stances with the previous pope, there is an opportunity for the election of a pope that would align with scriptural values of life, identity, family, and religious freedom. Let’s pray for this next election.
- Lord, we ask Your love, compassion, and comfort be with those who mourn the passing of Pope Francis.
- Lord, as the cardinals select Pope Francis’ successor, we ask You for a fearless Pope who will boldly speak truth to everyone from ordinary people to leaders of nations.
- Lord, we ask for a spirit of humility among the cardinals and that they would focus on selecting Your choice and not man’s.
- Lord, we acknowledge there are many outstanding, well qualified candidates to be Pope Francis’ successor. As the cardinals make their decision we ask for the discernment of Samuel. Just as Samuel passed over David’s older brothers until he knew God’s choice, we ask that the cardinals pass over everyone who is not Your choice. When the right one appears let them say as Samuel, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
- Lord, we ask for a Pope who listens to Your spirit. May his relationship with You be vibrant and true, sparking a revival in the church.
- Lord, may he openly share Your Holy Spirit with hundreds of millions of Catholic believers. May he unleash a fresh spirit-led awaking among Catholics across the world.
- Lord, we ask for a pope who will embrace the renewal of traditional families.
- Lord, we ask for a Pope who will inspire a generation of people to take the name of Jesus to marketplaces in every nation.
- Lord, we ask You to send Your angels to protect the incoming papal selection process. Keep it free of intervention from evil and dark forces.
- Lord, as Catholic churches have expanded over the past four years, we pray for qualified and willing bishops established in Your Word and righteousness who will faithfully shepherd and teach new believers to know You and walk in Your ways.
Pope Francis followed a life of simplicity and humility, often opting for a simpler lifestyle that resonated with the people worldwide. Politically he leaned left openly disagreeing with President Trump on immigration policies. Pope Francis advocated for the poor and marginalized. He offered communion to those in the LBGTQ community and supported same-sex unions.
As Catholics wait for the cardinals to select a new pope, many are praying for a more traditional Pope who will embrace conservative leanings as many believe the conservative trend worldwide has led to the unprecedented growth Catholic congregations are now experiencing. We pray together this next pope would seek what God’s Word says about issues and not man.

Father, I pray that you will hand pick the new Pope,. I pray that he will be a mighty man of faith and will be bold to carry out your plans. Strengthen him and encourage him to do the right things no matter how many obstacles he may encounter. I ask this with thanksgiving in
Jesus’s name, Amen.
Father,
We ask for a Pope who will be spirit led, one who knows you & your word & one who follows the leading & the voice of your spirit. We ask that you raise up a man of God, one who will lead your church in the ways of wisdom, truth & righteousness according to your holy scriptures. We cancel every assignment against this man of God that you have called & chosen for the position of Pope in Jesus name & we decree that you will equip & empower him to do & fulfill all that he is called to do in the name of Jesus.
Amen & Amen!
No, the Pope is NOT a ‘faith leader for all’, nor is he ‘our’ Pope!
I wasn’t aware that IFA is a Catholic organization. Is it?!
(Maybe not all Catholics) BUT Catholicism worships and prays to Mary and the church deemed “saints” – all dead people! Many Catholics worship the Pope. The Word of God clearly states only pray to God/Jesus alone. Do not worship or pray to the dead or anyone except God. Qualifications for sainthood are not Scriptural! All the homosexuality going on amongst Catholic leadership. There is much paganism in this denomination and all denominations come from Catholicism. All have retained practices (Sunday worship, Easter, Christmas, man-made calendar with false religious holidays, etc..) and false theologies. How many churches are doing Easter egg hunts and rabbits? Christmas trees, parties, mistle toe, etc? Catholic church deliberately rejected and omitted everything to do with the Jewish/Abrahamic/Israel origins of our Christian faith.! We are grafted into the tree. We are saved through the Jewish blood line. We must return to Messiah Jesus and follow Him and read the Bible and obey Him, not the church, if you love Him! Satan comes as an angel of light. Also God’s angels serve the believers not the unbelievers. Many come to Jesus and say they did all these good works in His name and Jesus says I NEVER KNEW YOU. Depart from Me! Beware of Ecumenism-all Christian denominations (and other religions) coming together to do good works, pray, worship God- do not focus on different doctrinal opinions or beliefs. You believe what you want but we can all do good works together. A FALSE UNITY! All true Disciples believe the same truths and have ALL in common. True believers are a REMNANT in every nation and are unified through the Holy Spirit of God, knowing Truth and following the One True Messiah-Jesus/Yeshua! Lastly, the Pope and his position are world famous/popular/many love him/it. Yet, Jesus said,” If the world hates Me, they will hate you too.” Is the world hating the Pope? It is shameful how many Christian leaders are mourning this wicked man. What about those false shepards??
Yes, Michelle.
Lord ad savior I pray for a Pope that is a real believer and born again Christian. One that will follow the Bible values, precepts and principles. A Pope that will understand the needs of ALL the people and not only of those who practice what the Bible condemns.: homosexuality, greed, their own truth instead of the only truth! The Catholic Church have enough money to remedy poverty if they want to.
My daughter-in-law is from the Philippines, and she says that the Philippine candidate for Pope is the most liberal of all and is primarily responsible for the terrible political problems the Philippines are suffering right now.
I want a pope that will not be as political as pope Francis and sadly he was liberal and I feel hypocritical. I pray that God state loud and clear who the next pope that He wants. I would like to see the next pope more in line with traditional values of marriage and family and to condemn the current trans agenda. Trust in God. 🙏😇🙏
Absolutely. Pope Francis was not a friend of the Jews.
While we hope there will be a Pope selected who actually embodies Biblical values, I do not believe Christians should be mourning a man who not only preached heretical doctrine, but any who claims to be the head of the church, as any Pope does, as Jesus Christ is the only head of the church. Instead of praying for the Catholic Church to thrive, we should be praying that all churches return to their proper place under the authority of Jesus Christ and His headship.
As someone whom Jesus saved and delivered from Roman Catholicism my prayer would not be for a new Pope, but for all those who have been deceived by that false religion. That they would finally hear the true gospel and escape. Because if that belief system is just another denomination within the Christian fold then the Reformation was a terrible mistake. It is first and foremost a mission field.
Thankful you heard and responded to the true Gospel in repentance and faith, and “came out of her”. May many more do likewise.
