It may be a political off-year, but this upcoming Tuesday will see a host of critical elections across the nation. As red and blue Americans head to polling places on November 4, The Epoch Times has compiled a list of some of the most critical races to watch.

New York City

IFA has covered New York City’s mayoral election for months now. The Epoch Times notes that Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a radical Islamic socialist, “is all but guaranteed to win this race.

Mamdani is running against Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, and Andrew Cuomo, New York’s former Democratic governor now running as an independent. Recent polls show Mamdani has a double-digit lead over his opponents.

Virginia

Virginia will select a new governor this Tuesday, with current Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears running against Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger. Representative Spanberger is currently favored to win, with some polls showing a double-digit lead.

The state has trended toward Democrats in recent elections, backing Biden in 2020 and Harris in 2024. However, the Times notes current Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin achieved a surprise victory over Democrat candidate Terry McAuliffe in 2021.

Virginia’s attorney general election, has garnered national attention, due in no small part to inflammatory comments made by Democrat candidate Jay Jones. A few years ago, Jones wrote in leaked text messages that he would like to kill former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert, as well as his wife and kids.

Jones’ texts caught the attention of the nation in the wake of the Charlie Kirk shooting, with many seeing his messages as emblematic of the rising political violence in America. Jones has received relentless criticism since these texts were leaked, and his opponent, current Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, has been working tirelessly to turn that momentum into political currency.

New Jersey

New Jersey will also select a governor on Tuesday, with Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill running against Republican Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli.

One of the most notable things about this year’s gubernatorial race in New Jersey is how much money has been poured into it. The Times noted that the race “has drawn record-breaking infusions of cash from both parties—more than $72 million.”

While New Jersey has historically been a blue state, Democrats are reportedly in a less favorable position these days. Representative Sherrill’s lead is down to just 1%, meaning this race is anyone’s game going into Tuesday.

Pennsylvania

Three of Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court’s Democratic justices, Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht, are up for reelection. Rather, than facing Republican opponents, the Times notes voters “will simply decide whether they should remain on the bench.”

If voters choose to retain these justices, they will serve for another 10 years. And, as the Times notes, this decision could have drastic effects on our elections for the next decade, as Pennsylvania is one of the nation’s swing states.

Ballot Measures

In addition to the above races, voters in several states will also decide on key ballot measures this Tuesday. In Maine, for example, voters will consider Maine Question 1, which would mandate voter 1 in the state. Texans, meanwhile, will consider Proposition 16, which would make citizenship a requirement to vote.

The most watched ballot measure, however, will be Proposition 50 in California. Voters will decide whether to “temporarily override the state’s independent congressional districting commission to allow Democrats to flip as many as five House seats.”

Governor Newsom has come out in full support of Proposition 50, calling it necessary to combat redistricting in Texas, which could give Republicans an extra five seats. Whatever voters decide on will likely have drastic effects on the midterms next years, where the whole House of Representatives will be up for reelection once again.
